1 Ο Ηλίας ο Θεσβίτης, από τη Θισβέ της Γαλαάδ, είπε στον Αχαάβ: «Ορκίζομαι στον Κύριο που υπηρετώ, τον αληθινό Θεό του Ισραήλ, ότι τα επόμενα χρόνια δε θα πέσει στη γη δροσιά ούτε βροχή, παρά μόνο με προσταγή δική μου».

2 Έπειτα ο Κύριος είπε στον Ηλία: 3 «Φύγε από ’δω και πήγαινε προς τ’ ανατολικά, να κρυφτείς κοντά στο χείμαρρο Χερίθ, ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη. 4 Θα πίνεις νερό από το χείμαρρο κι εγώ θα δώσω προσταγή στους κόρακες να φροντίζουν για την τροφή σου εκεί». 5 Έτσι ο Ηλίας έφυγε κι έπραξε σύμφωνα με το λόγο του Κυρίου. Πήγε κι έμεινε κοντά στο χείμαρρο Χερίθ, ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη. 6 Οι κόρακες του έφερναν ψωμί και κρέας πρωί και βράδυ, κι έπινε νερό από το χείμαρρο. 7 Μετά όμως από μερικές μέρες ξεράθηκε ο χείμαρρος, γιατί υπήρχε ανομβρία στη χώρα.

8 Τότε μίλησε ο Κύριος στον Ηλία και του είπε: 9 «Σήκω, πήγαινε στη Σαρεπτά, στην περιοχή της Σιδώνας, και μείνε εκεί. Εγώ διέταξα μια χήρα να φροντίζει για την τροφή σου». 10 Σηκώθηκε, λοιπόν, ο Ηλίας και πήγε στη Σαρεπτά.

Όταν έφτασε στην πύλη της πόλης, είδε μια χήρα που μάζευε ξύλα. Της φώναξε και της είπε: «Φέρε μου, σε παρακαλώ, λίγο νερό σ’ ένα κύπελλο για να πιω». 11 Ενώ αυτή πήγαινε να φέρει νερό, της φώναξε: «Φέρε μου, σε παρακαλώ, κι ένα κομμάτι ψωμί». 12 Εκείνη απάντησε: «Μα τον αληθινό Θεό, το Θεό σου, δεν έχω καθόλου ψωμί, παρά μόνο μια χούφτα αλεύρι στο πιθάρι και λίγο λάδι στο δοχείο. Ήρθα εδώ για να μαζέψω δυο ξυλαράκια, να πάω να ετοιμάσω για μένα και το γιο μου ό,τι έχει απομείνει, να το φάμε και μετά να πεθάνουμε».

13 Ο Ηλίας όμως της είπε: «Μην ανησυχείς· πήγαινε και κάνε όπως είπες. Μόνο φτιάξε πρώτα για μένα μια μικρή λαγάνα από τ’ αλεύρι σου και φέρε μού την· έπειτα φτιάξε για σένα και για το γιο σου. 14 Γιατί ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "το πιθάρι με το αλεύρι δεν θ’ αδειάσει και το λάδι στο δοχείο δεν θα λιγοστέψει, ως τη μέρα που ο Κύριος θα στείλει βροχή στη γη"».

15 Πήγε, λοιπόν, η γυναίκα κι έκανε όπως της είπε ο Ηλίας. Κι έμεινε να τρώνε αυτός, η ίδια και ο γιος της για πολλές μέρες. 16 Πράγματι, το πιθάρι με το αλεύρι δεν άδειασε και το λάδι στο δοχείο δε λιγόστεψε, όπως ακριβώς είχε πει ο Κύριος μέσω του Ηλία.

17 Μετά τα γεγονότα αυτά αρρώστησε ο γιος της γυναίκας, της οικοδέσποινας. Η αρρώστια του ήταν πάρα πολύ βαριά, κι απ’ αυτήν πέθανε. 18 Τότε η γυναίκα είπε στον Ηλία: «Τι σου χρωστούσα, άνθρωπε του Θεού; Ήρθες στο σπίτι μου για να μου υπενθυμίσεις την αμαρτία μου και να κάνεις να πεθάνει ο γιος μου;»

19 Αυτός της είπε: «Δώσ’ μου το παιδί σου». Το πήρε από την αγκαλιά της και το ανέβασε στο ανώγι, όπου έμενε ο ίδιος, και το ξάπλωσε πάνω στο κρεβάτι του. 20 Προσευχήθηκε τότε στον Κύριο και είπε: «Κύριε, Θεέ μου, γιατί έκανες κακό στη χήρα που με φιλοξενεί, αφήνοντας να πεθάνει ο γιος της;» 21 Μετά ξάπλωσε πάνω στο παιδί τρεις φορές και προσευχήθηκε στον Κύριο μ’ αυτά τα λόγια: «Κύριε, Θεέ μου, κάνε σε παρακαλώ να επιστρέψει η ψυχή του παιδιού αυτού μέσα του».

22 Ο Κύριος άκουσε την επίκληση του Ηλία, ξαναγύρισε η ψυχή του παιδιού μέσα του και αναστήθηκε. 23 Τότε ο Ηλίας πήρε το παιδί και το κατέβασε από το ανώγι στο σπίτι, το παρέδωσε στη μητέρα του και της είπε: «Να ο γιος σου, είναι ζωντανός». 24 Εκείνη του απάντησε: «Τώρα κατάλαβα ότι εσύ είσαι άνθρωπος του Θεού και πως ό,τι προφητεύει το στόμα σου είναι πραγματικά λόγος Κυρίου».

17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. 18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? 19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. 20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? 21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.*17.21 stretched: Heb. measured*17.21 into…: Heb. into his inward parts 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
