1 Ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ είχε πια γεράσει πολύ. Όσο και να τον σκέπαζαν με ρούχα, δεν μπορούσε να ζεσταθεί. 2 Γι’ αυτό του πρότειναν οι άνθρωποί του: «Κύριέ μας, βασιλιά, άφησε να σου βρούμε μια νέα κοπέλα να σε παραστέκεται και να σε περιποιείται κι επίσης να κοιμάται στην αγκαλιά σου, για να σε ζεσταίνει». 3,4 Αναζήτησαν, λοιπόν, σ’ όλη την περιοχή του Ισραήλ μια ωραία και νέα κοπέλα και βρήκαν την Αβισάγ, τη Σουναμίτισσα. Την έφεραν στο βασιλιά κι αυτή τον φρόντιζε και τον υπηρετούσε. Αλλά ο βασιλιάς δεν είχε σχέσεις μαζί της.

5,6 Την ίδια εκείνη εποχή ο Αδωνίας, γιος του Δαβίδ και της Χαγγίθ, ήταν ένας πολύ ωραίος και φιλόδοξος νέος. «Εγώ θα γίνω βασιλιάς!» έλεγε με αυτοπεποίθηση. Η μητέρα του τον είχε γεννήσει μετά τον Αβεσσαλώμ, κι ο πατέρας του δεν του είχε ποτέ χαλάσει χατήρι. Προμηθεύτηκε, λοιπόν, άμαξες και ιππείς κι έβαλε πενήντα άντρες να τρέχουν μπροστά από την άμαξά του. 7 Επίσης ήρθε σε διαπραγματεύσεις με τον Ιωάβ, γιο της Σερουΐας και με τον ιερέα Αβιάθαρ, οι οποίοι πήγαν με το μέρος του και τον υποστήριξαν. 8 Αλλά ο ιερέας Σαδώκ και ο Βεναΐας, γιος του Ιεωϊαδά, ο προφήτης Νάθαν κι επίσης ο Σιμεΐ, ο Ρεΐ και η προσωπική φρουρά του Δαβίδ δεν πήγαν μαζί του.

9 Μια μέρα ο Αδωνίας διοργάνωσε μεγάλη γιορτή στην τοποθεσία Πέτρα του Φιδιού, κοντά στην πηγή Ρωγήλ, όπου θυσίασε πρόβατα, βόδια και καλοθρεμμένα μοσχάρια. Στη γιορτή προσκάλεσε όλους τους αδερφούς του, γιους του βασιλιά, καθώς και όλους τους άντρες από την περιοχή της φυλής Ιούδα που ήταν στην υπηρεσία του βασιλιά. 10 Δεν κάλεσε όμως τον προφήτη Νάθαν, ούτε το Βεναΐα, ούτε τους άντρες της φρουράς ούτε τον αδερφό του το Σολομώντα.*Σολομών. Το όνομα ετυμολογείται από την εβρ. λ. «σαλόμ», που σημαίνει ειρήνη.

11 Πήγε τότε ο Νάθαν στη Βηρσαβεέ, μητέρα του Σολομώντα, και της είπε: «Ξέρεις ότι ο Αδωνίας, γιος της Χαγγίθ, ανακήρυξε τον εαυτό του βασιλιά; Κι ο κύριός μου ο Δαβίδ δεν έχει ιδέα! 12 Τώρα, λοιπόν, έλα να σου δώσω μια συμβουλή για να σώσεις τη ζωή σου και τη ζωή του γιου σου, του Σολομώντα: 13 Σήκω και πήγαινε στο βασιλιά Δαβίδ και πες του: "εσύ, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά, δεν ορκίστηκες σ’ εμένα, τη δούλη σου, ότι ο γιος μου ο Σολομών θα σε διαδεχτεί στο θρόνο και θα βασιλέψει μετά από σένα; Γιατί τότε έγινε βασιλιάς ο Αδωνίας;" 14 Κι ενώ εσύ ακόμα θα μιλάς εκεί με το βασιλιά, θα έρθω κι εγώ και θα σε υποστηρίξω».

15 Έτσι, η Βηρσαβεέ παρουσιάστηκε στο βασιλιά, στο υπνοδωμάτιό του. Ήταν πολύ γέρος και τον υπηρετούσε η Αβισάγ, η Σουναμίτισσα. 16 Η Βηρσαβεέ έσκυψε βαθιά και προσκύνησε το βασιλιά. «Τι σου συμβαίνει;» τη ρώτησε εκείνος. 17 Αυτή του απάντησε: «Κύριέ μου, εσύ έχεις ορκιστεί σ’ εμένα τη δούλη σου, στ’ όνομα του Κυρίου, του Θεού σου, ότι ο γιος μου ο Σολομών θα σε διαδεχτεί στο θρόνο. 18 Τώρα, όμως, βασιλιάς έγινε ο Αδωνίας· κι εσύ δεν έχεις ιδέα, κύριέ μου βασιλιά. 19 Πήγε και θυσίασε πολλά πρόβατα, βόδια και καλοθρεμμένα μοσχάρια και κάλεσε στη γιορτή όλους τους γιους σου κι επίσης τον ιερέα Αβιάθαρ και τον αρχιστράτηγο Ιωάβ· το δούλο σου το Σολομώντα, όμως, δεν τον κάλεσε. 20 Σ’ εσένα, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, είναι στραμμένα τα μάτια όλων των Ισραηλιτών, για να τους αναγγείλεις ποιος θα σε διαδεχτεί στο θρόνο. 21 Διαφορετικά, όταν εσύ πεθάνεις, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, εγώ και ο γιος μου ο Σολομών θα θεωρηθούμε ένοχοι για εσχάτη προδοσία».

22 Ενώ ακόμα αυτή μιλούσε με το βασιλιά, ήρθε κι ο προφήτης Νάθαν. 23 Τον ανάγγειλαν λοιπόν στο Δαβίδ: «Είναι κι ο προφήτης Νάθαν εδώ». Αυτός παρουσιάστηκε στο βασιλιά και τον προσκύνησε με το πρόσωπο στη γη. 24 «Κύριέ μου βασιλιά», είπε, «έχεις εσύ υποσχεθεί ότι διάδοχός σου στο θρόνο θα είναι ο Αδωνίας; 25 Σήμερα αυτός έχει πάει και θυσιάζει βόδια, καλοθρεμμένα μοσχάρια και πρόβατα πολλά. Και μάλιστα κάλεσε στη γιορτή όλους τους γιους σου κι επίσης τον αρχιστράτηγο και τον ιερέα Αβιάθαρ. Την ίδια τούτη ώρα όλοι αυτοί τρώνε και πίνουνε μαζί του και φωνάζουν: "ζήτω ο βασιλιάς Αδωνίας!" 26 Εμένα όμως το δούλο σου και τον ιερέα Σαδώκ, το Βεναΐα, γιο του Ιεωϊαδά και το Σολομώντα, το δούλο σου, δεν μας κάλεσε. 27 Έγινε άραγε αυτό το πράγμα με διαταγή δική σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά, δίχως καν ν’ ανακοινώσεις σ’ εμένα το δούλο σου ποιος θα είναι ο διάδοχός σου;»

28 Αμέσως ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ διέταξε: «Φωνάξτε μου εδώ τη Βηρσαβεέ». Αυτή ήρθε και παρουσιάστηκε μπροστά του. 29 Τότε ο βασιλιάς τής έκανε όρκο: «Ορκίζομαι στον αληθινό Θεό», είπε, «αυτόν που απάλλαξε τη ζωή μου από κάθε θλίψη, 30 ότι, όπως σου είχα ορκιστεί στο παρελθόν ενώπιον του Κυρίου, του Θεού του Ισραήλ, πως ο γιος σου ο Σολομών θα με διαδεχτεί στο θρόνο, το ίδιο κάνω και σήμερα». 31 Τότε η Βηρσαβεέ γονάτισε με το πρόσωπο στη γη, προσκύνησε το βασιλιά και είπε: «Μακάρι να ζήσεις για πάντα, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά Δαβίδ!»

32 Έπειτα, ο βασιλιάς διέταξε τους αξιωματούχους του: «Καλέστε μου τον ιερέα Σαδώκ, τον προφήτη Νάθαν και το Βεναΐα, γιο του Ιεωϊαδά». Όλοι αυτοί ήρθαν και παρουσιάστηκαν μπροστά στο βασιλιά. 33 Τότε ο βασιλιάς τούς διέταξε: «Πάρτε μαζί σας τους δούλους του κυρίου σας, ανεβάστε το γιο μου το Σολομώντα στο μουλάρι μου και κατεβάστε τον στην πηγή Γιχών. 34 Εκεί, ο ιερέας Σαδώκ κι ο προφήτης Νάθαν θα τον χρίσουν βασιλιά του Ισραήλ. Μετά θα σαλπίσετε με τη σάλπιγγα και θα φωνάξετε: "ζήτω ο βασιλιάς Σολομών!" 35 Έπειτα, θα τον ακολουθήσετε στην πόλη, όπου θα έρθει να γίνει η ενθρόνιση και να βασιλέψει αυτός στη θέση μου. Αυτόν εγώ όρισα να γίνει ηγεμόνας στον Ισραήλ και στον Ιούδα».

36 Ο Βεναΐας αποκρίθηκε στο βασιλιά: «Έτσι να γίνει. Μακάρι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου να το επιβεβαιώσει, κύριέ μου βασιλιά! 37 Όπως ο Κύριος ήταν μαζί μ’ εσένα, έτσι ας είναι και με το Σολομώντα, κι ας δοξάσει το θρόνο του περισσότερο από τον δικό σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά». 38 Τότε ο ιερέας Σαδώκ, ο προφήτης Νάθαν κι ο Βεναΐας, γιος του Ιεωϊαδά, κι επίσης οι Χερεθαίοι και οι Φελεθαίοι πήγαν κι ανέβασαν το Σολομώντα πάνω στο μουλάρι του βασιλιά Δαβίδ και τον έφεραν στην πηγή Γιχών. 39 Εκεί ο ιερέας Σαδώκ πήρε το κέρας του λαδιού από τη σκηνή και έχρισε το Σολομώντα. Μετά σάλπισαν με τη σάλπιγγα κι όλος ο λαός φώναξε: «Ζήτω ο βασιλιάς Σολομών!»

40 Όλος ο λαός της πόλης ακολουθούσε το Σολομώντα παίζοντας φλογέρες κι εκδηλώνοντας τη μεγάλη του χαρά, έτσι που η γη σείστηκε από τις φωνές τους. 41 Ο θόρυβος ακούστηκε μέχρι τον Αδωνία και τους καλεσμένους του, την ώρα που τέλειωναν το φαγητό τους. Ο Ιωάβ κατάλαβε τον ήχο της σάλπιγγας και είπε: «Γιατί αυτή η οχλοβοή στην πόλη;» 42 Δεν είχε προλάβει ν’ αποσώσει τα λόγια του, κι έρχεται ο Ιωνάθαν, γιος του ιερέα Αβιάθαρ. «Έλα», του λέει ο Αδωνίας, «εσύ είσαι γενναίος και πρέπει να φέρνεις καλές ειδήσεις».

43 Ο Ιωνάθαν απάντησε: «Δυστυχώς όχι. Ο κύριός μου, ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ, έκανε βασιλιά το Σολομώντα. 44 Μαζί του έστειλε τον ιερέα Σαδώκ, τον προφήτη Νάθαν και το Βεναΐα, γιο του Ιεωϊαδά, κι επίσης τους Χερεθαίους και τους Φελεθαίους και τον ανέβασαν πάνω στο μουλάρι του βασιλιά. 45 Ο ιερέας Σαδώκ κι ο προφήτης Νάθαν τον έχρισαν βασιλιά στην πηγή Γιχών. Από ’κει προχώρησαν προς την πόλη με φωνές χαράς και όλη η πόλη είναι αναστατωμένη. Αυτός είναι ο θόρυβος που ακούτε. 46 Μετά απ’ αυτά», συνέχισε ο Ιωνάθαν, «ο Σολομών κάθισε στο βασιλικό θρόνο, 47 και πήγαν οι αξιωματούχοι του βασιλιά να ευχηθούν τον κύριό μας, το βασιλιά Δαβίδ. "Μακάρι ο Θεός σου να κάνει το όνομα του Σολομώντα πιο ένδοξο από το δικό σου", του έλεγαν, "και μακάρι να δοξάσει το θρόνο του πιο πολύ από τον δικό σου!" Κι ο βασιλιάς, καθώς ήταν πάνω στο κρεβάτι του, υποκλίθηκε. 48 Και είπε ακόμα, ο βασιλιάς: "ας είναι ευλογημένος ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, που μου έδωσε διάδοχο κι επέτρεψε να ζήσω και να τον δω στο θρόνο μου"».

49 Τότε όλοι οι καλεσμένοι του Αδωνία φοβήθηκαν. Σηκώθηκαν και πήρε καθένας το δρόμο του. 50 Ο ίδιος ο Αδωνίας φοβήθηκε τόσο πολύ το Σολομώντα, που έτρεξε και πιάστηκε από τα κέρατα του θυσιαστηρίου.*Πράξη που υποδήλωνε επίκληση της προστασίας του Θεού. Όποιος πιανόταν από τα κέρατα του θυσιαστηρίου δεν διέτρεχε κίνδυνο θανάτου.51 Πήγαν, λοιπόν, και είπαν στο βασιλιά Σολομώντα: «Ο Αδωνίας σ’ έχει φοβηθεί τόσο πολύ, που πήγε και πιάστηκε από τα κέρατα του θυσιαστηρίου και ζητάει να του ορκιστείς σήμερα ότι δε θα τον θανατώσεις». 52 Ο Σολομών απάντησε: «Αν αποδειχτεί ειλικρινής, ούτε μία τρίχα του δε θα πέσει στη γη. Αν όμως αποδειχθεί παράνομος, θα πεθάνει». 53 Έτσι ο βασιλιάς έστειλε και τον κατέβασαν από το θυσιαστήριο κι αυτός ήρθε και τον προσκύνησε. Ο Σολομών του είπε: «Μπορείς να πας στο σπίτι σου».

11 Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not? 12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon. 13 Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign? 14 Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.*1.14 confirm: Heb. fill up

15 And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king. 16 And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. 22 And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in. 23 And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. 24 And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? 25 For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.*1.25 God…: Heb. 28 Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-sheba. 32 And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king. 33 The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:*1.33 mine…: Heb. which belongeth to me 34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon. 35 Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah. 36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too. 37 As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David. 38 So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon. 39 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon. 40 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.*1.40 pipes: or, flutes

41 And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar? 42 And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings. 43 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king. 44 And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule: 45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard. 46 And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom. 47 And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed. 48 And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it. 49 And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.

50 And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. 51 And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword. 52 And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die. 53 So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
