1 Με εντολή του Κυρίου, όμως, είχε πάει στη Βαιθήλ κι ένας προφήτης από τη χώρα του Ιούδα. Και τη στιγμή που ο Ιεροβοάμ στεκόταν μπροστά στο θυσιαστήριο για να προσφέρει το θυμίαμα, 2 ο προφήτης απηύθυνε στο θυσιαστήριο το λόγο του Κυρίου: «Θυσιαστήριο, θυσιαστήριο», είπε, «να τι λέει ο Κύριος: "ένας γιος θα γεννηθεί από τους απογόνους του Δαβίδ, που το όνομά του θα είναι Ιωσίας. Αυτός θα θυσιάσει πάνω σου τους ιερείς των ιερών τόπων, εκεί όπου αυτοί τώρα προσφέρουν τη θυσία του θυμιάματος, και θα κάψει πάνω σου κόκαλα ανθρώπων"». 3 Κι αμέσως μετά είπε: «Να ποιο θα είναι το σημείο ότι μίλησε ο Κύριος: το θυσιαστήριο αυτό θα σπάσει και θα χυθεί η στάχτη που είναι πάνω του».

4 Όταν ο βασιλιάς Ιεροβοάμ άκουσε τα λόγια που είπε ο προφήτης εναντίον του θυσιαστηρίου της Βαιθήλ, άπλωσε το χέρι του πάνω από το θυσιαστήριο εναντίον του προφήτη και πρόσταξε: «Πιάστε τον!» Αλλά το χέρι του ξεράθηκε και δεν μπορούσε να το ξαναφέρει στη θέση του. 5 Τότε έσπασε το θυσιαστήριο και χύθηκε η στάχτη του, σύμφωνα με το σημείο που έδωσε ο προφήτης με εντολή του Κυρίου.

6 Ο βασιλιάς τότε αποκρίθηκε στον προφήτη: «Παρακάλεσε, λοιπόν, τον Κύριο, το Θεό σου, και προσευχήσου για μένα, να γυρίσει το χέρι μου στη θέση του». Ο προφήτης παρακάλεσε τον Κύριο να γυρίσει το χέρι του βασιλιά στη θέση του, και το χέρι έγινε όπως πρώτα.

7 Ο βασιλιάς είπε στον προφήτη: «Έλα μαζί μου σπίτι να φας για να πάρεις δύναμη και θα σου κάνω κι ένα δώρο». 8 Ο προφήτης όμως του απάντησε: «Ακόμα κι αν μου ’δινες το μισό από το σπίτι σου, δε θα ερχόμουν μαζί σου. Δε θα φάω και δε θα πιω τίποτε σ’ αυτόν εδώ τον τόπο, 9 γιατί αυτή η εντολή μού δόθηκε με το λόγο του Κυρίου: "δε θα φας ούτε θα πιεις τίποτα, ούτε θα γυρίσεις πίσω από τον ίδιο δρόμο που ήρθες"».

10 Έτσι έφυγε ο προφήτης κι ακολούθησε δρόμο διαφορετικό από ’κείνον που είχε πάρει για να έρθει στη Βαιθήλ.

11 Στη Βαιθήλ κατοικούσε ένας γέροντας προφήτης. Οι γιοι του ήρθαν και του διηγήθηκαν όλα όσα έκανε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού εκείνη την ημέρα στη Βαιθήλ, καθώς και τα λόγια που είπε στο βασιλιά. 12 Ο πατέρας τους τούς ρώτησε: «Ποιο δρόμο πήρε ο προφήτης;» Οι γιοι του τού έδειξαν το δρόμο που πήρε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού που είχε έρθει απ’ τον Ιούδα. 13 Τότε είπε στους γιους του: «Σαμαρώστε μου το γαϊδούρι». Του το σαμάρωσαν, ανέβηκε πάνω του, 14 κι ακολούθησε το δρόμο που είχε πάρει ο άνθρωπος του Θεού.

Τον βρήκε να κάθεται κάτω από μια βελανιδιά, και τον ρώτησε: «Εσύ είσαι ο άνθρωπος του Θεού, που ήρθε από τη χώρα του Ιούδα;» Εκείνος απάντησε: «Εγώ είμαι». 15 «Έλα μαζί μου, στο σπίτι», του λέει, «να φας κάτι».

16 Ο προφήτης απάντησε: «Δεν μπορώ να γυρίσω και να έρθω μαζί σου. Δε θα φάω και δε θα πιω τίποτε μαζί σου σ’ αυτόν εδώ τον τόπο. 17 Η εντολή που μου δόθηκε με το λόγο του Θεού είναι να μη φάω και να μην πιω τίποτα εδώ, μήτε να γυρίσω πίσω από το δρόμο απ’ όπου είχα έρθει».

18 Ο άλλος του είπε: «Κι εγώ προφήτης είμαι, όπως εσύ. Ένας άγγελος, με εντολή του Κυρίου μού είπε να σε πάρω στο σπίτι μου για να φας και να πιεις». Του έλεγε όμως ψέματα. 19 Πήγε λοιπόν μαζί του στο σπίτι του κι έφαγε και ήπιε.

20 Αλλά ενώ κάθονταν στο τραπέζι, ήρθε λόγος του Κυρίου στο γέροντα προφήτη της Βαιθήλ 21 και είπε στον άνθρωπο του Θεού, που επέστρεφε στη χώρα του Ιούδα: «Άκου τώρα τι λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου: Επειδή δεν πειθάρχησες στο λόγο του και δεν τήρησες την εντολή του, 22 αλλά γύρισες πίσω κι έφαγες και ήπιες σ’ αυτόν εδώ τον τόπο, το πτώμα σου δεν θα θαφτεί στον τάφο των προγόνων σου».

23 Αφού ο προφήτης του Ιούδα τέλειωσε το φαγητό του και το ποτό του, ο γέροντας προφήτης τού σαμάρωσε το γαϊδούρι, για να γυρίσει πίσω. 24 Αλλά καθώς γύριζε, τον συνάντησε στο δρόμο ένα λιοντάρι, όρμησε πάνω του και τον σκότωσε. Το πτώμα του προφήτη έμεινε εκεί πεσμένο πάνω στο δρόμο· το γαϊδούρι και το λιοντάρι στέκονταν πλάι του.

25,26 Κάποιοι περαστικοί είδαν το πτώμα πάνω στο δρόμο, και το λιοντάρι να στέκεται κοντά του. Ήρθαν, λοιπόν, και διηγήθηκαν το γεγονός στην πόλη όπου κατοικούσε ο γέροντας προφήτης, αυτός που είχε παρασύρει τον προφήτη του Ιούδα να γυρίσει πίσω από το δρόμο του. Εκείνος όταν τ’ άκουσε είπε: «Αυτός είναι ο άνθρωπος του Θεού που παρήκουσε το λόγο του Κυρίου· γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος πραγματοποίησε το λόγο που του είχε πει: Τον παρέδωσε στο λιοντάρι που του επιτέθηκε και τον σκότωσε». 27 Έπειτα είπε στους γιους του: «Σαμαρώστε μου το γαϊδούρι». Του το σαμάρωσαν, 28 κι έφυγε. Όταν έφτασε στο σημείο εκείνο, βρήκε το πτώμα ριγμένο πάνω στο δρόμο και το γαϊδούρι και το λιοντάρι να στέκονται πλάι του. Το λιοντάρι όμως δεν είχε κατασπαράξει το γαϊδούρι.

29 Τότε ο γέροντας προφήτης σήκωσε το πτώμα του ανθρώπου του Θεού, το έβαλε πάνω στο γαϊδούρι του και το έφερε στην πόλη, για να του κάνει επικήδειο θρήνο και να τον θάψει. 30 Έβαλε το πτώμα στο δικό του τάφο και τον θρηνολογούσε λέγοντας: «Αλίμονο, αδερφέ μου!» 31 Αφού τον έθαψε είπε στους γιους του: «Όταν πεθάνω, να θάψετε κι εμένα στον τάφο όπου θάφτηκε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού. Να βάλετε το πτώμα μου πλάι στο δικό του πτώμα. 32 Γιατί ο λόγος που είπε αυτός ο άνθρωπος, σύμφωνα με τη διαταγή του Κυρίου, ενάντια στο θυσιαστήριο της Βαιθήλ κι ενάντια σ’ όλους τους ιερούς τόπους των πόλεων της Σαμάρειας, θα πραγματοποιηθεί οπωσδήποτε».

33 Αλλά και μετά απ’ αυτό το γεγονός, ο Ιεροβοάμ δεν άλλαξε τακτική. Εξακολουθούσε να παίρνει ανθρώπους αδιάκριτα από το λαό και να τους κάνει ιερείς των ιερών τόπων. Όποιος ήθελε, τον καθιέρωνε και γινόταν τέτοιος ιερέας. 34 Αυτή, όμως, η αμαρτία του Ιεροβοάμ οδήγησε στη διάλυση της οικογένειάς του και στην ολοσχερή εξαφάνιση της δυναστείας του.

1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.*13.1 burn: or, offer 2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee. 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. 4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Beth-el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him. 5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. 6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.*13.6 the LORD, and: Heb. the face of the LORD, etc 7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. 8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: 9 For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. 10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.

11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. 12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. 13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, 14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. 15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. 16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: 17 For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.*13.17 it…: Heb. a word was 18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. 19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back: 21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee, 22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase. 25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. 26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.*13.26 torn: Heb. broken 27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. 28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.*13.28 torn: Heb. broken 29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him. 30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! 31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones: 32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.*13.33 made…: Heb. returned and made*13.33 consecrated…: Heb. filled his hand 34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
