1,2 Τελικά ο Ιώβ άνοιξε το στόμα του κι άρχισε μ’ αυτά τα λόγια να καταριέται τη μέρα που γεννήθηκε:

3 Ας ήταν να χαθεί η μέρα που γεννήθηκα

κι η νύχτα που είδε

τη στιγμή της σύλληψής μου!

4 Η μέρα εκείνη να γενεί σκοτάδι!

Να μην τη θυμηθεί ποτέ

εκεί ψηλά ο Θεός

και ποτέ πια το φως

πάνω της να μη λάμψει.

5 Να τη διεκδικήσει πάλι το σκοτάδι·

να τη σκεπάζουν μαύρα σύννεφα

κι η έκλειψη του ήλιου ας την τρομάζει.

6 Τη νύχτα εκείνη, το σκοτάδι να την καταπιεί·

να μη λογαριαστεί

στου χρόνου τα μερόνυχτα

ούτε μες στων μηνών τους αριθμούς.

7 Η νύχτα εκείνη ας μην είναι γόνιμη

κι ας μην τη διαπεράσει

χαρμόσυνη κραυγή.

8 Να την καταραστούν οι μάγοι που ’χουνε τη δύναμη

τις μέρες να τις καταριούνται,

αυτοί που άφοβα μπορούν

να ξεσηκώνουν τον Λεβιάθαν.

9 Ας μη λάμψουν τ’ αστέρια της αυγής της

κι ας περιμένει μάταια το φως·

ποτέ της να μη δει το γλυκοχάραμα.

10 Γιατί τις πύλες να μην κλείσει

της κοιλιάς της μάνας μου,

για να μη δουν τα μάτια μου τη θλίψη;

11 Γιατί να μην πεθάνω στην κοιλιά της μάνας μου;

Γιατί τουλάχιστον δε χάθηκα στης γέννας τη στιγμή;

12 Γιατί βρεθήκαν γόνατα να με δεχτούν,

μαστοί για να θηλάσω;

13 Θα ’μουνα τώρα ήσυχος στον τάφο μου·

θα κοιμόμουν και θ’ αναπαυόμουνα

14 αντάμα με τους βασιλιάδες

και με τους άρχοντες της γης,

που βάζανε για χάρη τους να χτίζουν πυραμίδες.*να χτίζουν πυραμίδες. Το εβρ. έχει κατά λ. «να οικοδομούν ερείπια». Η ερμηνεία της φρ. είναι αβέβαιη.

15 Θα ήμουν με τους ηγεμόνες που είχαν άφθονο χρυσάφι,

που με ασήμι γέμισαν

τους νεκρικούς θαλάμους τους.

16 Ή πάλι σαν καταχωμένο έκτρωμα

δε θα υπήρχα·

καθώς τα βρέφη που δεν είδανε το φως.

17 Στον τάφο οι ασεβείς παύουν να κάνουν το κακό·

εκεί βρίσκουν κι οι κουρασμένοι ανάπαυση.

18 Βρίσκουν την ησυχία τους και οι δεσμώτες,

χωρίς ν’ ακούνε των φυλάκων τις φωνές.

19 Εκεί αντάμα βρίσκονται κι ο άσημος κι ο ξακουστός,

κι ο δούλος είναι ελεύθερος

από τον κύριό του.

20 Γιατί να συνεχίζει ο κουρασμένος

να βλέπει της ζωής το φως;

Γιατί σε μάκρος να τραβά

η ζωή των πικραμένων;

21 Καρτερούν το θάνατο

κι αυτός δεν έρχεται

και τον γυρεύουν πιότερο

κι από κρυμμένο θησαυρό.

22 Θα ’ταν πανευτυχείς, θα ’ταν πασίχαροι

αν βρίσκαν έναν τάφο.

23 Γιατί να ζει ο άνθρωπος

που στα τυφλά βαδίζει,

που σ’ αδιέξοδο

τον έχει φέρει ο Θεός;

24 Έχω τροφή τους στεναγμούς

και σαν νερό ξεχύνονται οι κραυγές μου·

25 εκείνο που φοβόμουνα με χτύπησε·

κι εκείνο που με τρόμαζε, με βρήκε.

26 Δεν έχω ειρήνη ούτ’ ησυχία

ούτ’ ανάπαυση·

μονάχα ταραχή.

11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly? 12 Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck? 13 For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest, 14 With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves; 15 Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver: 16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light. 17 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.*3.17 weary: Heb. wearied in strength 18 There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. 19 The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.
