1 Ο Ιώβ απάντησε:

2 Ακούστε, δώστε προσοχή στα λόγια μου,

κι ετούτο ας είναι η παρηγόρια σας σ’ εμένα.

3 Κάντε υπομονή ώσπου να μιλήσω,

κι όταν θα ’χω μιλήσει

ειρωνευθείτε με.

4 Μήπως ενάντια σ’ άνθρωπο παραπονιέμαι;

Έτσι έχω κάθε λόγο να ’μαι ανυπόμονος.

5 Κοιτάξτε με και θα τρομάξετε

και θ’ απομείνετε απορημένοι και βουβοί.

6 Όταν το σκέφτομαι τα γόνατά μου λύνονται

και φρίκη με κυριεύει.

7 Γιατί ο Θεός αφήνει να ζουν οι ασεβείς,

να φτάνουν ως τα γερατειά

και τ’ αγαθά τους να πληθαίνουν;

8 Βλέπουνε να στεριώνουνε μαζί τους τα παιδιά τους,

να μεγαλώνουν μπρος στα μάτια τους

τα εγγόνια τους.

9 Ζούνε στα σπίτια τους σιγουρεμένα, δίχως φόβο,

και το μαστίγιο του Θεού

δεν πέφτει πάνω τους.

10 Πάντα είναι σφριγηλός και γόνιμος ο ταύρος τους·

η αγελάδα τους χωρίς αποβολές γεννάει.

11 Αφήνουνε να τρέχουν λεύτερα τα παιδιά τους

σαν τα πρόβατα

κι ολόχαρα χορεύουνε τα νιάτα.

12 Τραγούδια λέν’ με τύμπανα και με κιθάρες,

και με τον ήχο της φλογέρας χαίρονται.

13 Περνούν ευτυχισμένα τη ζωή τους

κι ανώδυνα πεθαίνουν μέσα σε μια στιγμή.

14 Ωστόσο λένε στο Θεό: «Άσε μας ήσυχους!

Δε θέλουμε να μάθουμε το θέλημά σου.

15 Τόσο είσαι παντοδύναμος ώστε να σε υπακούμε;

Τι θα κερδίσουμε σ’ εσένα

αν προσευχόμαστε;»

16 Θαρρούνε πως η ευτυχία είναι στο χέρι τους.

Μακριά από μένα, ωστόσο, τέτοιου είδους λογισμοί.

17 Είδες ποτέ να σβήνει το λυχνάρι

της ζωής των ασεβών;

είδες ποτέ να τους χτυπήσει δυστυχία;

Πότε τους ετιμώρησε μες στο θυμό του ο Θεός;

18 Πότε γίνανε τάχα σαν άχυρο στον άνεμο;

πότε σαν να ’ταν σκύβαλα

τους άρπαξε η καταιγίδα;

19 Εσείς λέτε πως ο Θεός φυλάει για τα παιδιά

την τιμωρία που ταιριάζει στον πατέρα.

Αλλά δεν είν’ αυτό σωστό.

Όχι! Ο ίδιος ο ένοχος, πρέπει να τιμωρείται·

για να του γίνει μάθημα.

20 Να δει με τα ίδια του τα μάτια

την καταστροφή του,

κι απ’ την οργή

του Παντοδύναμου να πιει.

21 Δε νοιάζεται τι μέλλει στα παιδιά του,

μετά το θάνατό του, να συμβεί.

22 Μα είν’ ανάγκη το Θεό να τον διδάξουμε,

αυτόν που κρίνει ως και τους αγγέλους;

23 Ο ένας σε καλή διατηρείται υγεία

μέχρι την τελευταία του στιγμή·

24 έχει γερά, καλοθρεμμένα μέλη

και κόκαλα όλο δύναμη.

25 Κι ο άλλος πεθαίνει με την πίκρα στην ψυχή,

γιατί ποτέ δε χάρηκε την ευτυχία.

26 Κι οι δυο στο χώμα βρίσκονται θαμμένοι·

στρατιές σκουλήκια τούς σκεπάζουν και τους δύο.

27 Ω! Ναι, ξέρω καλά τι συλλογίζεστε

και τις πανούργες σκέψεις σας για μένα.

28 Ρωτάτε: «Πού κατέληξε

ο πλούσιος ο άνομος;

το σπίτι του τι τάχα έχει απογίνει;»

29 Μα δε ρωτάτε τους ταξιδεμένους;

κι όσα διηγούνται δεν τ’ ακούσατε;

30 Τη μέρα της καταστροφής

γλιτώνει ο ασεβής,

τη μέρα της οργής ξεφεύγει.

31 Ποιος θα τολμήσει κατά πρόσωπο

να του ελέγξει τη διαγωγή;

και ποιος αυτά που έπραξε να του τ’ ανταποδώσει;

32 Όταν πεθάνει, με πομπή μεγάλη τον κηδεύουν

και βάζουνε στον τάφο του τιμητική φρουρά.

33 Πολλοί πηγαίνουνε μπροστά απ’ το φέρετρό του

κι άλλοι αναρίθμητοι ακολουθούν.

Ακόμα και το χώμα είν’ ελαφρό από πάνω του.

34 Κι ύστερα εσείς κάθεστε και μου λέτε

ανόητες παρηγοριές.

Όλα όσα αραδιάζετε είν’ ένα ψέμα.
