1 Ο Ελιού συνέχισε την ομιλία του.

2 Κάνε, Ιώβ, λίγη ακόμα υπομονή

μ’ αυτή τη διδαχή μου.

Κάτι έχω ακόμη να προσθέσω,

για να υποστηρίξω το Θεό.

3 Τις γνώσεις μου τις φέρνω από μακριά,

για να δικαιώσω το δημιουργό μου.

4 Είναι η καθαρή αλήθεια ό,τι θα πω·

έχεις μπροστά σου κάποιον

που το θέμα του άριστα το κατέχει.

5 Ναι, ο Θεός είν’ ισχυρός

κι αδιάφορος δεν μένει·

στέκει στις αποφάσεις του αμετακίνητος.

6 Τον ασεβή δεν τον αφήνει στη ζωή·

σ’ όσους καταπιέζονται

το δίκιο τους το δίνει.

7 Τα μάτια του δεν τ’ αποστρέφει από τους δίκαιους·

κι αν κυβερνούν μαζί με βασιλιάδες,

παντοτινά στο θρόνο τούς αφήνει

να δέχονται τιμές.

8 Αλλ’ αν φυλακιστούν

και κάτω απ’ τα δεσμά τους υποφέρουν,

9 είναι για να τους δείξει

ποια τα έργα τους, οι ανομίες τους

και η αλαζονεία.

10 Τους κάνει να προσέχουν

όταν τους προειδοποιεί

και τους καλεί απ’ το κακό να επιστραφούνε.

11 Αν υπακούσουνε και τον υπηρετήσουν

θα ζήσουν τη ζωή τους ως το τέλος

μέσα στην ευτυχία και τη χαρά.

12 Αλλ’ αν δεν υπακούσουν

το χαμό τους προκαλούν

και θα πεθάνουν μες στην αφροσύνη τους.

13 Άνθρωποι με καρδιά ασεβή,

συνέχεια με το Θεό τα βάζουν·

δεν τον παρακαλούν να τους βοηθήσει

όταν τους τιμωρεί.

14 Πεθαίνουν σε ηλικία νεανική

κι είναι τα τέλη της ζωής τους ντροπιασμένα.

15 Μα ο Θεός μες απ’ τη θλίψη τελειοποιεί αυτούς που θλίβονται·

με τις δοκιμασίες τούς διδάσκει.

16 Έτσι κι εσένα, Ιώβ, άλλοτε σ’ είχε γλιτώσει από τη θλίψη,

δίνοντάς σου αντίθετα μεγάλη άνεση.

Ήτανε το τραπέζι σου γεμάτο

από τις πιο εκλεκτές τροφές.

17 Μα τώρα σου έχει αναγγελθεί η καταδίκη σου

και της ασέβειας την πληρωμή λαβαίνεις.

18 Πρόσεξε μη σε φέρει ο θυμός σου σ’ εξέγερση ενάντια στο Θεό·

και μη νομίσεις πως θ’ απαλλαγείς

προσφέροντάς του πλούσια δώρα.

19 Δε θα σου έφτανε όλος σου ο πλούτος·

δε θα σε βοηθούσε το χρυσάφι σου,

ούτε της δύναμής σου όλα τα μέσα.

20 Μην την αποζητάς τη νύχτα εκείνη,

που όλα τα έθνη θα καταστραφούν.

21 Φυλάξου! Μη στραφείς προς το κακό,

ακόμη κι αν θαρρείς

πως προτιμότερο είναι αυτό από τις θλίψεις σου.

22 Βλέπεις, Ιώβ, είναι μεγάλος ο Θεός·

τόση πολλή έχει δύναμη.

Ποιος μπορεί να διδάξει όπως αυτός;

23 Ποιος μπορεί να του υποδείξει τι να κάνει;

ποιος μπορεί να του πει ότι αδίκησε;

24 Μη λησμονάς το έργο του να εγκωμιάζεις,

που με ωδές το εξυμνούν οι άνθρωποι.

25 Όλοι μπορούν να το θαυμάσουν,

έστω κι αν το κοιτάζει ο άνθρωπος μονάχα από μακριά.

26 Βλέπεις, Ιώβ, είναι μεγάλος ο Θεός

κι άπιαστος για τη σκέψη μας.

Αμέτρητος των χρόνων του ο αριθμός.

27 Αυτός συλλέγει του νερού τις στάλες,

ατμό τις κάνει, ομίχλη

ή φτιάχνει τη βροχή,

28 που ξεχειλίζει από τα σύννεφα

και χύνεται πάνω στο πλήθος των ανθρώπων.

29 Μπορεί κανείς να καταλάβει

πώς ξεδιπλώνονται τα σύννεφα,

πώς η βροχή ξεσπάει στο θόλο τ’ ουρανού;

30 Φωτίζει μ’ αστραπές τα σύννεφα,

ενώ της θάλασσας τα βάθη μένουν σκοτεινά.

31 Μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο κυβερνάει τους λαούς,

τους προμηθεύει άφθονη τροφή.

32 Παίρνει την αστραπή μες στις παλάμες του,

την κατευθύνει σε ορισμένο στόχο.

33 Ο κεραυνός την καταιγίδα προμηνά·

και τα κοπάδια ακόμα νιώθουν ότι πλησιάζει.

24 Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold. 25 Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off. 26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out. 27 For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof: 28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly. 29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle? 30 Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.*36.30 bottom: Heb. roots 31 For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance. 32 With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt. 33 The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.*36.33 the vapour: Heb. that which goeth up
