1 Έκανα συμφωνία με τα μάτια μου

κόρη ποτέ μ’ επιθυμία να μην κοιτάξω.

2 Αλλιώς, τι θα μπορούσα να προσμένω

από τον παντοδύναμο Θεό;

τι θα μου έστελνε από τα ύψη;

3 Η συμφορά είναι για τον άδικο·

για κείνους που παρανομούν η δυστυχία.

4 Βλέπει ο Θεός το δρόμο που βαδίζω

κι αυτός μετράει όλα μου τα βήματα.

5 Ποτέ μου ψέμα δεν μεταχειρίστηκα

ούτε ποτέ προσπάθησα κάποιον να εξαπατήσω.

6 Ας με ζυγίσει ο Θεός με τέλεια ζυγαριά

και θα δει τότε

την ακεραιότητά μου.

7 Αν ξέφυγε το βήμα μου από το δρόμο το σωστό,

αν παρασύρθηκε απ’ τα μάτια μου η καρδιά μου

κι αν κηλιδώθηκαν από την αδικία τα χέρια μου,

8 τότε αυτά που σπέρνω εγώ

άλλοι ας τ’ απολαύσουν

και τα σπαρτά μου ας ξεριζωθούν.

9 Αν η καρδιά μου από γυναίκα δελεάστηκε

και στήθηκα να καρτερώ στου γείτονα την πόρτα,

10 τότε η γυναίκα μου ας μαγειρεύει

γι’ άλλον άντρα

κι άλλοι μαζί της ας πλαγιάσουν.

11 Γιατί αυτό είν’ ανομία επαίσχυντη

κι αμάρτημα που οι δικαστές

θα ’πρεπε αυστηρά να τιμωρούνε.

12 Είναι φωτιά που κατακαίει και δεν αφήνει τίποτα,

μέχρι τις ρίζες κατατρώει τα σπαρτά μου.

13 Αν κάποτε το δίκιο του δούλου μου ή της δούλης μου παρέβλεψα

στις διαφορές που μπορεί να ’χανε μαζί μου,

14 πώς θα μπορέσω να σταθώ μπρος στο Θεό

και τι θα του αποκριθώ όταν με κρίνει;

15 Γιατί, αυτός που μ’ έπλασε,

μήπως δεν έπλασε κι εκείνους;

ο ίδιος δεν μας εσχημάτισε στη μητρική κοιλιά;

16 Ποτέ μου στους φτωχούς ό,τι ζητούσαν δεν τ’ αρνήθηκα,

ούτε άφησα μες στην απελπισία τις χήρες.

17 Ποτέ δεν έφαγα μονάχος το ψωμί μου,

χωρίς να φάνε απ’ αυτό και τα ορφανά,

18 γιατί εγώ τα μεγάλωσα από μικρά

σαν να ’μουνα πατέρας,

κι από την ώρα που γεννήθηκαν τα καθοδήγησα.

19 Όταν έβλεπα κάποιον που ρούχα δεν είχε να ντυθεί,

έναν φτωχό που σκεπάσματα δεν είχε,

20 του ’δινα από τα πρόβατά μου

μάλλινο ρούχο για να ζεσταθεί

κι αυτός από καρδιάς μ’ ευχαριστούσε.

21 Αν χέρι σήκωσα πάνω σε ορφανό,

επειδή έβλεπα πως είχα

των δικαστών την υποστήριξη,

22 το χέρι μου ας σπάσει απ’ τον αγκώνα,

κι ας ξεκολλήσει από τον ώμο μου.

23 Με τρόμαζε η τιμωρία του Θεού·

μπρος στη μεγαλοσύνη του

ν’ αντέξω δεν μπορούσα.

24 Ποτέ μου το χρυσάφι δεν το εμπιστεύτηκα

ούτε και το λογάριασα ποτέ για σιγουριά μου.

25 Για τα πολλά μου πλούτη δεν περηφανεύτηκα

ούτε για όσα με τα χέρια μου μπόρεσα ν’ αποκτήσω.

26 Κοιτάζοντας τον ήλιο και τη λάμψη του

ή τη μαγευτική πορεία της σελήνης,

27 ποτέ μου ενδόμυχα δεν γοητεύτηκα

ούτε ποτέ λατρευτικά τους έστειλα φιλιά.

28 Αυτό θα ’ταν αμάρτημα, που οι δικαστές το τιμωρούνε,

γιατί θα είχα απαρνηθεί τον ύψιστο Θεό.

29 Ποτέ μου δε χαιρόμουνα όταν ο εχθρός μου υπέφερε

ούτε ευχαριστιόμουνα

κακό σαν τον χτυπούσε.

30 Ποτέ μου ν’ αμαρτήσει δεν άφηνα το στόμα μου,

ζητώντας με κατάρες το χαμό του.

31 Όσοι φιλοξενήθηκαν στο σπίτι μου

έχουνε να το λένε,

πως από τα καλύτερα χορτάσαν φαγητά.

32 Ξένος κανείς δεν πέρασε τη νύχτα του στο ύπαιθρο·

στον οδοιπόρο οι πόρτες μου πάντα ήταν ανοιχτές.

33 Ποτέ ανομίες δε χρειάστηκε να κρύψω ή παραπτώματα,

όπως πολλοί το κάνουν.

34 Έτσι τα λόγια των ανθρώπων δε φοβόμουν

ούτε με τρόμαζε του κόσμου η περιφρόνηση,

ώστε να μένω σιωπηλός,

στο σπίτι μου κλεισμένος.

35 Αχ, ας γινόταν κάποιος να μ’ ακούσει!

Μπορώ να υπογράψω ό,τι έχω πει.

Μακάρι να μ’ αποκριθεί ο Παντοδύναμος!

Ας μου ’δειχνε του αντιδίκου μου

την έγγραφη κατηγορία

36 κι εγώ στους ώμους μου πρόθυμα θα τη σήκωνα

και στο κεφάλι θα την έβαζα κορώνα.

37 Για τη ζωή μου θα μιλούσα στο Θεό

με κάθε λεπτομέρεια

και θα μπορούσα να τον βλέπω μες στα μάτια.

38 Αν το χωράφι μου παραπονέθηκε για μένα

κι έκανα εγώ τ’ αυλάκια του να κλάψουνε,

39 επειδή δεν τα φρόντισα

μα πήρα τους καρπούς του,

κι έγινα έτσι ανυπάκουος στο Θεό,

που ’ναι ο πραγματικός ιδιοκτήτης του,

40 τότε ας φυτρώσουνε αγκάθια αντί για στάρι,

κι αντί κριθάρι αγριοχόρταρα.*Νοηματικά οι στ. 38-40 τοποθετούνται προ του στ. 35, γιατί προφανώς εκεί βρίσκεται το τέλος της ομιλίας του Ιώβ.

Εδώ τελειώνουνε τα λόγια του Ιώβ.
