1 Ο Ιώβ απάντησε:

2 Ως πότε θα με βασανίζετε

και με τα λόγια σας θα με ταλαιπωρείτε;

3 Μύριες φορές ως τώρα με προσβάλατε

και που με βασανίζετε

δε νιώθετε ντροπή.

4 Ακόμα κι αν ήταν αλήθεια ότι έσφαλα

το σφάλμα μου βαραίνει μόνο εμένα.

5 Μα εσείς θέλετε να μ’ εξουθενώσετε

ανώτεροι για να αισθανθείτε,

κι απ’ τα παθήματά μου

πως φταίω ν’ αποδείξετε.

6 Δε βλέπετε λοιπόν πως ο Θεός με αδίκησε

και μ’ έχει μες στο δίχτυ του μπλεγμένον;

7 «Βοήθεια», φωνάζω, μα κανείς

δε μου αποκρίνεται·

ζητάω το δίκιο μου,

κανείς δικαιοσύνη ν’ αποδώσει.

8 Φράζει ο Θεός το δρόμο μου

και να περάσω δεν μπορώ·

τα μονοπάτια μου τα κρύβει στο σκοτάδι.

9 Μου παίρνει όλον τον πλούτο μου,

διασύρει την υπόληψή μου.

10 Σα να ’μουν τοίχος με γκρεμίζει απ’ όλες τις μεριές

και καταρρέω·

σαν δέντρο ξεριζώνει την ελπίδα μου.

11 Ξεσπάει του θυμού του η φλόγα πάνω μου,

με λογαριάζει εχθρό του.

12 Όλα του τα στρατεύματα έρχονται μαζεμένα

και κατευθύνονται εναντίον μου,

τριγύρω στη σκηνή μου στρατοπεδεύουν.

13 Τ’ αδέρφια μου από μένα τ’ απομάκρυνε

ως να ’μουν άγνωστος μου φέρνονται οι γνωστοί μου.

14 Οι φίλοι μου κι οι συγγενείς μου

μ’ εγκατέλειψαν·

εκείνοι που τους φιλοξένησα με λησμονήσαν.

15 Οι υπηρέτριές μου ξένο με λογαριάζουνε

και σαν αλλόφυλο με βλέπουν.

16 Καλώ τον υπηρέτη μου

κι αυτός δεν αποκρίνεται,

κάθε φορά που τον χρειάζομαι

θα πρέπει να τον ικετεύω.

17 Δεν υποφέρει την ανάσα μου

η γυναίκα μου

ούτε τ’ αδέρφια μου την αποφορά μου.

18 Και τα μικρά παιδιά ακόμα

δεν με σέβονται·

όταν με δυσκολία σηκώνομαι,

με περιπαίζουν.

19 Οι πιο στενοί μου φίλοι με σιχαίνονται,

κι είναι εναντίον μου εκείνοι

που τους αγαπούσα.

20 Πετσί και κόκαλο έμεινα·

το πρόσωπό μου μοιάζει με κρανίο.*Η κατανόηση του στ. στα εβρ. είναι προβληματική.

21 Αχ, λυπηθείτε, λυπηθείτε με, εσείς φίλοι μου!

Το χέρι του Θεού μ’ έχει χτυπήσει.

22 Γιατί μου φέρεστε κι εσείς σκληρά όπως ο Θεός;

Τάχα δε μ’ έχετε αρκετά ως τώρα τυραννήσει;

23 Αχ, ας γινόταν να γραφτούν τα λόγια μου

και σε βιβλίο να καταχωριστούνε!

24 Ή σ’ ένα βράχο με κοπίδι να χαραχτούν

και με χυτό μολύβι

να γεμίσουνε τα γράμματα

ώστε να μείνουν ανεξίτηλα για πάντα.

25 Μα όχι! Ξέρω πως ζει ο Θεός, ο υπερασπιστής μου,

και πως θα πει τον τελευταίο λόγο εδώ στη γη.

26 Τώρα που ’χει κουρελιαστεί το δέρμα μου

και σάρκα δεν υπάρχει πια

πάνω στα κόκαλά μου,

τώρα θέλω να δω το Θεό.

27 Τώρα, και με τα ίδια μου τα μάτια

θέλω να τον δω,

αυτόν τον ίδιο κι όχι άλλον, ξένο.

Τα σωθικά μου λιώνουν, μ’ ετούτη τη λαχτάρα.*Πολλές παραδοσιακές μετ. των στ. 25-27 έχουν στηριχθεί στη λατινική μετ., τη Βουλγάτα, και όχι στο εβρ. πρωτότυπο.

28 Εσείς στοχάζεστε πώς να με κατατρέξετε

και ποια αιτία να βρείτε

για να μου ρίξετε μομφή.

29 Αλλά θα πρέπει εσείς το ξίφος να φοβάστε

γιατί η μανία σας αξίζει θάνατο.

Και μην ξεχνάτε πως κριτής είν’ ο Θεός.
