1 Στην Αυσίτιδα*Αυσίτιδα ή Ουζ. Χώρα που πρέπει να βρισκόταν πάνω από την περιοχή των Εδωμιτών, ΝΑ της Νεκράς Θαλάσσης (βλ. Θρ 4:21). ζούσε κάποτε ένας άνθρωπος που ονομαζόταν Ιώβ. Ο άνθρωπος αυτός ήταν δίκαιος και τέλειος· σεβόταν το Θεό και αποστρεφόταν το κακό. 2 Είχε αποκτήσει εφτά γιους και τρεις θυγατέρες. 3 Είχε επίσης περιουσία εφτά χιλιάδες γιδοπρόβατα, τρεις χιλιάδες καμήλες, πεντακόσια ζευγάρια βόδια, πεντακόσια γαϊδούρια, καθώς και πλήθος υπηρέτες. Ήταν ο πλουσιότερος άνθρωπος απ’ όλους που κατοικούσαν στην Ανατολή.

4 Οι γιοι του συνήθιζαν να πηγαίνουν ο ένας στο σπίτι του άλλου όπου έδιναν συμπόσια, καθένας με τη σειρά του. Έστελναν και καλούσαν και τις τρεις αδερφές τους να φάνε και να πιουν μαζί τους. 5 Κάθε φορά που τέλειωναν τα συμπόσια, τους καλούσε ο Ιώβ και τους εξάγνιζε. Ξυπνούσε τότε νωρίς το πρωί και πρόσφερε από ένα ολοκαύτωμα για τον καθένα τους. «Ίσως τα παιδιά μου αμάρτησαν», σκεφτόταν, «ίσως ασέβησαν με τη σκέψη τους στο Θεό».

6 Μια μέρα που ήρθαν τα ουράνια όντα να παρουσιαστούν μπροστά στον Κύριο, ήρθε ανάμεσά τους κι ο σατανάς. 7 Ο Κύριος τον ρώτησε: «Από πού έρχεσαι εσύ;» Κι εκείνος απάντησε: «Περιπλανήθηκα πάνω σ’ όλη τη γη και την περιδιάβηκα».

8 Ο Κύριος του είπε: «Πρόσεξες το δούλο μου, τον Ιώβ; Δεν υπάρχει άλλος σαν αυτόν πάνω στη γη· είναι άνθρωπος ακέραιος κι ευθύς· με σέβεται κι αποστρέφεται το κακό».

9 Ο σατανάς του απάντησε: «Μήπως με το αζημίωτο σε σέβεται ο Ιώβ; 10 Πάντα τον προστάτευες, αυτόν και το σπίτι του και όλα τα υπάρχοντά του. Ευλόγησες τα έργα του και πληθύνανε τα κοπάδια του στη χώρα. 11 Κάνε, όμως, πως αγγίζεις τα υπάρχοντά του και να δεις αν δημόσια δεν σε βλαστημήσει».

12 Είπε τότε ο Κύριος στο σατανά: «Ορίστε, σου παραδίδω όλα τα υπάρχοντά του· μόνο πάνω στον ίδιο να μην απλώσεις χέρι». Κι ο σατανάς έφυγε από τη σύναξη του Θεού.

13 Μια μέρα που οι γιοι και οι κόρες του Ιώβ έτρωγαν κι έπιναν στο σπίτι του μεγαλύτερου αδερφού τους, 14 φτάνει στον Ιώβ ένας αγγελιοφόρος και του λέει: «Εκεί που τα βόδια όργωναν και τα γαϊδούρια έβοσκαν κοντά τους, 15 όρμησαν Σαβαίοι*Σαβαίοι. Νομάδες ληστές, που πιθανώς προέρχονταν από τα νότια της Αραβίας. ληστές και τα άρπαξαν! Σκότωσαν τους δούλους σου με τα ξίφη τους και μονάχα εγώ κατάφερα να γλιτώσω, για να σου φέρω τα νέα».

16 Ενώ αυτός ακόμα μιλούσε, έρχεται άλλος αγγελιοφόρος και του λέει: «Φωτιά έπεσε απ’ τον ουρανό κι έκαψε τα πρόβατα και τους δούλους σου! Τα ’κανε όλα στάχτη και μονάχα εγώ κατάφερα να γλιτώσω για να σου φέρω τα νέα».

17 Ενώ αυτός ακόμα μιλούσε, έρχεται κι άλλος και του λέει: «Τρεις ομάδες Χαλδαίων*Χαλδαίων. Νομάδες της ερήμου, που πιθανώς προέρχονταν από τα ΒΔ της Αραβίας. ρίχτηκαν στις καμήλες και τις άρπαξαν! Σκότωσαν τους δούλους σου με τα ξίφη τους και μονάχα εγώ κατάφερα να γλιτώσω για να σου φέρω τα νέα».

18 Ενώ και αυτός μιλούσε ακόμη, έρχεται κι άλλος αγγελιοφόρος και λέει: «Οι γιοι σου και οι θυγατέρες σου έτρωγαν κι έπιναν στο σπίτι του μεγαλύτερου αδερφού τους. 19 Ξαφνικά φύσηξε άνεμος δυνατός από την άλλη άκρη της ερήμου, χτύπησε το σπίτι από παντού και το γκρέμισε! Τα παιδιά πλακώθηκαν στα ερείπια και σκοτώθηκαν και μόνο εγώ κατάφερα να γλιτώσω για να σου φέρω τα νέα».

20 Τότε σηκώθηκε ο Ιώβ και ξέσκισε το μανδύα του· ξύρισε το κεφάλι του κι έπεσε καταγής.*Εκδηλώσεις απόγνωσης και ταπείνωσης. Βλ. και υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29. Προσκυνούσε 21 κι έλεγε:

«Γυμνός απ’ την κοιλιά βγήκα της μάνας μου,

γυμνός και θα γυρίσω πίσω στη μάνα γη.

Ο Κύριος όλα τα ’δωσε,

ο Κύριος και τα πήρε πίσω.

Ευλογημένο να ’ναι τ’ όνομά του!»

22 Έτσι, παρ’ όλες αυτές τις συμφορές, ο Ιώβ δεν αμάρτησε και δεν ξεστόμισε τίποτα το ανάρμοστο ενάντια στο Θεό.

20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,*1.20 mantle: or, robe 21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. 22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.*1.22 charged…: or, attributed folly to God
