1 Ξέρεις την εποχή όπου γεννιούνται οι αίγαγροι;

τις ελαφίνες πρόσεξες

όταν κοιλοπονάνε;

2 Μέτρησες πόσους μήνες κρατάει η εγκυμοσύνη τους;

ξέρεις πότε είν’ ώρα να γεννήσουν;

3 Κάθονται χαμηλά πάνω στα πόδια τους

κι ελευθερώνονται

απ’ τους πόνους τους.

4 Τα μικρά δυναμώνουνε

και μεγαλώνουν μες στους κάμπους·

έπειτα φεύγουν

και δεν ξαναγυρίζουν πια.

5 Ποιος έδωσε ελευθερία στον όναγρο;

ποιος τα δεσμά του έλυσε,

τον άφησε να φύγει;

6 Όρισα κατοικία του τη στέπα,

τον έβαλα να ζήσει στη γη την αρμυρή.

7 Περιγελά της πολιτείας το θόρυβο·

ποτέ κανείς γαϊδουρολάτης δεν μπορεί

να τον εξαναγκάσει να δουλέψει.

8 Στα όρη τριγυρνά, που ’ναι η βοσκή του,

ψάχνει να βρει να φάει όποιο χορτάρι πράσινο.

9 Θαρρείς πως έχει διάθεση τ’ άγριο βουβάλι να σε υπηρετεί

ή να περνά τις νύχτες στο παχνί σου;

10 Θαρρείς πως θα δεχότανε

να το τραβάς με το σκοινί για να οργώσει

και να βολοκοπήσει το χωράφι σου;

11 Μπορείς να βασιστείς στην υπερβολική του δύναμη

και να του εμπιστευτείς

τις πιο βαριές δουλειές σου;

12 Θαρρείς πως θα σου κουβαλήσει τη σοδειά σου

και πως θα τη συνάξει

μες στ’ αλώνι σου;

13 Χτυπάει η στρουθοκάμηλος εύθυμα τα φτερά της,

μα να πετάξει δεν μπορεί καθώς ο πελαργός.

14 Τ’ αυγά της τα εγκαταλείπει καταγής,

τα εμπιστεύεται

στη ζεστασιά της άμμου.

15 Δε σκέφτεται ότι μπορεί κάποιος να τα πατήσει

ή ένα ζώο άγριο να τα λιώσει

κάτω απ’ το πέλμα του.

16 Με τα μικρά της, μάνα είναι σκληρή η στρουθοκάμηλος,

σαν να μην ήτανε δικά της·

κι αδιαφορεί αν χαμένοι πάνε οι κόποι της.

17 Κι αυτό γιατί εγώ σοφία δεν της έδωσα,

ούτε μια στάλα νοημοσύνη.

18 Μα όταν φοβηθεί και πάρει δρόμο τρέχοντας,

ούτ’ άλογο ούτε καβαλλάρης δεν τη φτάνει.

19 Μήπως εσύ έδωσες στο άλογο τη δύναμη

κι έντυσες το λαιμό του με τη χαίτη;

20 Μήπως εσύ άραγε μπορείς

σαν ακρίδα να το κάνεις να πηδάει

και τρόμο να σκορπά με το περήφανο χλιμίντρισμά του;

21 Σκάβει το χώμα στην κοιλάδα όλο χαρά

κι ορμά με δύναμη να αντικρούσει όπλα.

22 Φόβος δεν ξέρει τι θα πει

και δεν τρομάζει,

ούτε οπισθοχωρεί

μπρος στο σπαθί.

23 Τα βέλη στη φαρέτρα κουρταλούν

κι αστράφτουνε η λόγχη και το δόρυ.

24 Τρέμει από έξαψη, ορμά καλπάζοντας μπροστά·

δεν μπορεί να συγκρατηθεί,

όταν η σάλπιγγα αντηχήσει.

25 Στο κάθε σάλπισμα απαντά

μ’ ένα χλιμίντρισμα,

οσμίζεται από μακριά τη μάχη,

τις βροντερές φωνές των αρχηγών

και την πολεμική κραυγή.

26 Απ’ τη δική σου τάχατε σοφία

έμαθε το γεράκι να πετά,

όταν απλώνει τα φτερά του προς το νότο;

27 Μήπως με τη δική σου προσταγή

πετάει ο αετός στα ύψη

και χτίζει τη φωλιά του στα ψηλά;

28 Μέσα στους βράχους κατοικεί

σ’ απόκρημνες κορφές,

σε μέρη απρόσιτα

τη νύχτα του περνάει.

29 Για την τροφή του από ’κει πάνω καιροφυλακτεί·

τα μάτια του από μακριά

την ξεδιακρίνουν.

30 Τροφή για τα μικρά του είν’ το αίμα·

γι’ αυτό όπου το πτώμα,

εκεί κι οι αετοί.
