1 Το δέκατο έτος της βασιλείας του Σεδεκία στον Ιούδα –δέκατο όγδοο έτος της βασιλείας του Ναβουχοδονόσορ αντίστοιχα– ο Ιερεμίας πήρε μήνυμα από τον Κύριο. 2 Την εποχή εκείνη ο στρατός του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας πολιορκούσε την Ιερουσαλήμ κι ο προφήτης Ιερεμίας ήταν κρατούμενος στην αυλή της φρουράς στο παλάτι. 3 Τον είχε φυλακίσει ο βασιλιάς Σεδεκίας, γιατί ο Ιερεμίας είχε αναγγείλει τούτον το λόγο του Κυρίου: «Εγώ θα παραδώσω την πόλη αυτή στα χέρια του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας και θα την κυριέψει. 4 Ο ίδιος ο Σεδεκίας, ο βασιλιάς του Ιούδα, δε θα ξεφύγει από τους Βαβυλώνιους. Θα παραδοθεί εξάπαντος στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας και θα λογοδοτήσει σ’ αυτόν αυτοπροσώπως. 5 Ο Σεδεκίας θα οδηγηθεί από το Ναβουχοδονόσορ στη Βαβυλώνα και θα μείνει εκεί ωσότου λογαριαστώ μαζί του», λέει ο Κύριος. «Ακόμη κι αν πολεμήσετε τους Βαβυλώνιους, δε θα κερδίσετε τον πόλεμο».

6 Εκεί, λοιπόν, στη φυλακή ο Ιερεμίας διηγείται:

7 «Πήρα από τον Κύριο το ακόλουθο μήνυμα: "ο Χαναμεήλ, γιος του θείου σου, του Σαλλούμ, θα ’ρθει να σε βρει για να σου πει να αγοράσεις το χωράφι που βρίσκεται στην Αναθώθ,*Αναθώθ. Πόλη γνωστή ως η γενέτειρα του Ιερεμία (κεφ. 1:1), όπου έμεναν και οι συγγενείς του (πρβλ. 11:21 με 12:6). γιατί εσύ έχεις το δικαίωμα να το αγοράσεις". 8 Ήρθε λοιπόν, και με βρήκε ο ξάδερφός μου ο Χαναμεήλ στην αυλή της φρουράς, και μου είπε, σύμφωνα με τα λόγια του Κυρίου: "αγόρασε, σε παρακαλώ, το χωράφι μου στην Αναθώθ, στην περιοχή της φυλής Βενιαμίν, γιατί εσύ έχεις το δικαίωμα να το κληρονομήσεις και την υποχρέωση να το αγοράσεις. Αγόρασέ το, λοιπόν".

»Τότε βεβαιώθηκα ότι αυτό ήταν προσταγή του Κυρίου. 9 Αγόρασα, λοιπόν, το χωράφι στην Αναθώθ από τον ξάδερφό μου, και του ζύγισα τα χρήματα, δέκα εφτά σίκλους ασήμι. 10 Υπέγραψα και το συμβόλαιο, το σφράγισα μπροστά σε μάρτυρες και ζύγισα τα χρήματα στη ζυγαριά. 11 Πήρα το συμβόλαιο της αγοράς, το σφραγισμένο τμήμα του, καθώς και το ανοιχτό αντίγραφο,*Πήρα... αντίγραφο. Το πρωτότυπο και το αντίγραφο ενός συμβολαίου αγοράς ήταν γραμμένα στην ίδια επιφάνεια της περγαμηνής ή του παπύρου. Το πρωτότυπο ήταν γραμμένο στο πάνω μέρος, το οποίο το τύλιγαν και το έδεναν με κορδόνι, που το περνούσαν μέσα από τρύπες, και το σφράγιζαν. Το αντίγραφο, που ήταν γραμμένο στο κάτω μέρος του φύλλου τυλιγόταν αντίθετα και ήταν ελεύθερο. Έτσι το κείμενο μπορούσε πάντοτε να αναγνωσθεί και ταυτόχρονα να προφυλάσσεται από αλλαγές. με τα διάφορα στοιχεία και τους όρους του. 12 Μετά το έδωσα στο Βαρούχ,*Ο Βαρούχ ήταν ο προσωπικός γραμματέας του Ιερεμία. γιο του Νηρία, κι εγγονό του Μαασία, ενώ ήταν παρόντες ο ξάδερφός μου ο Χαναμεήλ, οι μάρτυρες που είχαν υπογράψει το συμβόλαιο και οι άνδρες που βρίσκονταν στην αυλή της φρουράς. 13 Τότε διέταξα το Βαρούχ μπροστά τους και του είπα: 14 "ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: Πάρε το έγγραφο αυτό, το σφραγισμένο συμβόλαιο της αγοράς με το αντίγραφό του και φύλαξέ το σ’ ένα πήλινο αγγείο για να διατηρηθεί εκεί για πολύν καιρό. 15 Γιατί ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει ότι θα αγοραστούν πάλι σπίτια, χωράφια και αμπέλια σ’ αυτήν τη χώρα"».

16 «Αφού έδωσα το συμβόλαιο της αγοράς στο Βαρούχ, γιο του Νηρία, προσευχήθηκα στον Κύριο και είπα: 17 "αχ, Κύριε Θεέ! Εσύ δημιούργησες τον ουρανό και τη γη με τη μεγάλη σου δύναμη, την ακαταμάχητη. Τίποτα δεν είναι δύσκολο σ’ εσένα. 18 Δείχνεις αγάπη σε χιλιάδες γενιές· όταν όμως οι άνθρωποι αμαρτάνουν τους τιμωρείς, αυτούς και τα παιδιά τους. Ω, Θεέ μεγάλε και δυνατέ, που τ’ όνομά σου είναι του σύμπαντος ο Κύριος! 19 Μεγάλος στα σχέδια και δυνατός στα έργα σου. Τα μάτια σου βλέπουν όλες τις πράξεις των ανθρώπων για ν’ ανταποδίδεις σε όλους ανάλογα με τον τρόπο της ζωής τους και με τις πράξεις τους. 20 Από τότε στην Αίγυπτο και μέχρι σήμερα έχεις κάνει καταπληκτικά θαύματα ανάμεσα στους Ισραηλίτες και στους άλλους λαούς και έτσι έγινες γνωστός σ’ όλο τον κόσμο. 21 Έβγαλες το λαό σου τον Ισραήλ από την Αίγυπτο με σημεία και με θαύματα, με δυνατό χέρι και δύναμη ακαταμάχητη, προκαλώντας μεγάλο τρόμο στους εχθρούς μας. 22 Έδωσες στους Ισραηλίτες αυτή τη χώρα, που είχες υποσχεθεί με όρκο να τη δώσεις στους προγόνους τους, τη χώρα που ρέει γάλα και μέλι. 23 Μπήκαν και την κυρίεψαν, αλλά δεν υπάκουσαν στη φωνή σου και δεν τήρησαν το νόμο σου· δεν έκαναν τίποτε απ’ όσα τους είχες διατάξει. Γι’ αυτό τους προξένησες όλο αυτό το κακό. 24 Τα επιχώματα του εχθρού έφτασαν ως τα τείχη της πόλης για να την κυριέψουν και σύντομα θα πέσει στα χέρια των Βαβυλωνίων. Θα την κυριέψουν με τα όπλα τους, και με τη βοήθεια της πείνας και των επιδημιών. Ό,τι είπες έγινε, το βλέπεις. 25 Παρ’ όλα αυτά, εσύ, Κύριε Θεέ, με διέταξες να αγοράσω με χρήματα τούτο το χωράφι ενώπιον μαρτύρων, αν και η Ιερουσαλήμ έχει πέσει σχεδόν στα χέρια των Βαβυλωνίων"».

26 «Τότε ο Κύριος μου απάντησε: 27 "εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός όλων των ανθρώπων και τίποτα δεν είναι αδύνατο σ’ εμένα. 28 Εγώ θα παραδώσω την πόλη αυτή στα χέρια των Βαβυλωνίων και του βασιλιά τους Ναβουχοδονόσορ και θα την κυριέψει. 29 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι που πολεμούν εναντίον αυτής της πόλης θα της βάλουν φωτιά και θα την κάψουν, αυτήν και τα σπίτια της που στις ταράτσες τους οι κάτοικοί της πρόσφεραν θυμίαμα στο Βάαλ και έκαναν σπονδές σε ξένους θεούς για να με εξοργίζουν. 30 Οι Ισραηλίτες και οι κάτοικοι του Ιούδα, από τα πρώτα χρόνια της ιστορίας τους, έκαναν μόνο το κακό ενώπιόν μου και με εξόργιζαν με τις πράξεις τους. 31 Ναι, η πόλη αυτή μ’ έχει εξοργίσει φοβερά, από τότε που την έχτισαν μέχρι σήμερα. Θα την καταστρέψω, λοιπόν, 32 για την κακία του λαού του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα, οι οποίοι με όσα έκαναν με εξόργισαν, αυτοί και οι βασιλιάδες τους, οι άρχοντές τους, οι ιερείς τους, οι προφήτες τους, καθώς και οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ. 33 Δεν μου έστρεψαν το πρόσωπό τους, αλλά τα νώτα τους. Αν και τους δίδαξα επίμονα, εν τούτοις δεν έδωσαν καμιά προσοχή για να μάθουν. 34 Έφτασαν ακόμη και στο σημείο να βάλουν τα είδωλά τους μέσα στο ναό που φέρει το όνομά μου, και να τον μολύνουν. 35 Καθιέρωσαν ιερούς τόπους προς τιμήν του Βάαλ, στην κοιλάδα Εννόμ,*Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 23:10. για να θυσιάζουνε τους γιους τους και τις κόρες τους στο Μολόχ. Αυτά δεν τους τα διέταξα εγώ, ούτε διανοήθηκα ποτέ ότι θα έκαναν τέτοιες βδελυρές πράξεις, που οδήγησαν το λαό του Ιούδα να αμαρτήσει.

36 "Εσείς λέτε ότι αυτή η πόλη παραδίδεται στην εξουσία του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας νικημένη από τον πόλεμο, την πείνα και τις επιδημίες. Ακούστε τώρα τι εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέω για την πόλη αυτή: 37 Θα τους συγκεντρώσω απ’ όλες τις χώρες όπου τους διασκόρπισα πάνω στο φοβερό θυμό μου και στη μεγάλη μου αγανάκτηση· θα τους επαναφέρω σ’ αυτή τη χώρα και θα κατοικήσουν με ασφάλεια. 38 Θα είναι πάλι ο λαός μου κι εγώ θα είμαι Θεός τους. 39 Θα τους κάνω να σκέφτονται και να ενεργούν για ένα σκοπό: πώς να με τιμούν κάθε μέρα για το δικό τους το καλό και των απογόνων τους. 40 Θα συνάψω αιώνια διαθήκη μαζί τους, ότι δεν θα σταματήσω να κάνω το καλό σ’ αυτούς, για να με τιμούν και να μην απομακρυνθούν από μένα. 41 Θα χαίρομαι να τους ευεργετώ και θα τους εγκαταστήσω μόνιμα σ’ αυτή τη χώρα. Και θα το κάνω μ’ όλη μου την καρδιά και μ’ όλη μου την δύναμη. 42 Όπως τους έφερα όλες αυτές τις συμφορές, έτσι θα τους φέρω κι όλα τα καλά που τους έχω υποσχεθεί. 43 Σ’ αυτή τη χώρα, για την οποία εσύ κι οι άλλοι λέτε ότι παραδίδεται στα χέρια των Βαβυλωνίων κι ότι θα ερημωθεί και δε θ’ απομείνει εκεί κανείς, ούτε άνθρωπος ούτε ζώο, εκεί θα ξαναγίνουν αγοραπωλησίες. 44 Θ’ αγοράζονται χωράφια με χρήματα και θα υπογράφονται συμβόλαια· θα σφραγίζονται τα συμβόλαια ενώπιον μαρτύρων στην περιοχή της φυλής Βενιαμίν, στα περίχωρα της Ιερουσαλήμ και στις πόλεις του Ιούδα, τόσο στις ορεινές όσο και στις πεδινές, καθώς και στις πόλεις του νότου. Θα την αλλάξω την κατάστασή τους. Εγώ το λέω, ο Κύριος"».

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 2 For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; 5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper.

6 And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 7 Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it. 8 So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. 9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.*32.9 seventeen…: or, seven shekels and ten pieces of silver 10 And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.*32.10 subscribed…: Heb. wrote in the book 11 So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open: 12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.

13 And I charged Baruch before them, saying, 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days. 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.

16 Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying, 17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:*32.17 too…: or, hid from thee 18 Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name, 19 Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:*32.19 work: Heb. doing 20 Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day; 21 And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror; 22 And hast given them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey; 23 And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them: 24 Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.*32.24 mounts: or, engines of shot 25 And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.*32.25 for the: or, though the

26 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, 27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it: 29 And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger. 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD. 31 For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,*32.31 a provocation…: Heb. for my anger 32 Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.*32.33 back: Heb. neck 34 But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it. 35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

36 And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; 37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: 39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:*32.39 for ever: Heb. all days 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.*32.40 from them: Heb. from after them 41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.*32.41 assuredly: Heb. in truth, or, stability 42 For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. 43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. 44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.
