1 Για τους Αμμωνίτες ο Κύριος λέει: «Γιατί ο Μιλκώμ, ο θεός των Αμμωνιτών, κατέκτησε την περιοχή της φυλής Γαδ και ο λαός του κατοίκησε στις πόλεις της; Δεν έχουν γιους οι Ισραηλίτες; Κανένας δεν υπάρχει να υπερασπιστεί τη χώρα τους; 2 Όμως έρχονται μέρες», λέει ο Κύριος, «που στη Ραββά των Αμμωνιτών θα κάνω ν’ ακουστεί αλαλαγμός πολέμου· η πόλη θα μεταβληθεί σε σωρό ερειπίων και τα χωριά της θα καούν ως τα θεμέλια· τότε οι Ισραηλίτες θα ξαναπάρουν πίσω την κληρονομιά που τους είχαν αρπάξει».

3 Θρηνήστε, της Εσεβών οι κάτοικοι, γιατί καταστράφηκε η Γαι! Θρηνήστε χωριά της Ραββά, φορέστε ρούχα πένθιμα, τρέξτε γύρω από τις πέτρινες μάντρες των χωραφιών σας κλαίγοντας. Φεύγει για την αιχμαλωσία ο θεός Μιλκώμ μαζί με τους ιερείς του και τους άρχοντές του. 4 Εσύ, πόλη, που επαναστάτησες ενάντια στο Θεό, τι καυχάσαι για τις πεδιάδες σου; Χαθήκαν οι πεδιάδες σου! Εσύ που στηριζόσουνα στους θησαυρούς σου κι έλεγες «ποιος θα εκστρατεύσει εναντίον μου;» 5 «Εγώ θα σου προκαλέσω φόβο απ’ όλους σου τους γείτονες», λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του σύμπαντος. «Θα σκορπιστείτε όλοι σας εδώ κι εκεί, και δε θα υπάρχει ούτ’ ένας να συγκεντρώσει τους διασκορπισμένους.

6 »Μετά απ’ αυτά εγώ θ’ αλλάξω την τύχη των Αμμωνιτών», λέει ο Κύριος.

7 Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέει σχετικά με τους Εδωμίτες: «Δεν υπάρχει πια σοφία στη Θαιμάν;*Θαιμάν. Περιοχή της Εδώμ, γνωστή για τη σοφία των κατοίκων της (βλ. Ιωβ 2:11·15:1· Οβδ 8-9). Χάθηκε η σκέψη από τους συνετούς; Εξαφανίστηκε η φρόνησή τους; 8 Φύγετε, τρέξτε! Βρείτε τόπους απόκρυφους να μείνετε, κάτοικοι της Δεδάν, γιατί έφτασε ο καιρός που θα σας τιμωρήσω· θα φέρω πάνω σας την καταστροφή, απόγονοι του Ησαύ. 9 Όταν έρχονται σ’ εσένα τρυγητές, λαέ του Εδώμ, αφήνουν λίγα τσαμπιά πίσω τους. Όταν τη νύχτα μπαίνουν κάπου κλέφτες, παίρνουν μονάχα αυτά που θέλουν. 10 Αλλά εγώ απογύμνωσα τελείως τους απογόνους του Ησαύ· αποκάλυψα τους κρυψώνες τους κι έτσι πια δεν μπορούν να κρύβονται. Καταστράφηκαν οι απόγονοί του, οι αδερφοί του, οι γείτονές του και ο ίδιος δεν υπάρχει πια. Κανένας δεν μπορεί να πει: 11 "άφησε εδώ τα ορφανά σου κι εγώ θα σου τα φροντίσω· οι χήρες σου μπορούν σ’ εμένα να ελπίζουν"».

12 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Ακόμα κι όσοι δεν έπρεπε να πιουν από της τιμωρίας το ποτήρι, το ήπιαν· κι εσύ, λαέ του Εδώμ, θέλεις να μείνεις τελείως ατιμώρητος; Αυτό δεν πρόκειται να γίνει! Απ’ το ποτήρι αυτό πρέπει να πιεις. 13 Εγώ ο Κύριος υποσχέθηκα με όρκο ότι η πρωτεύουσά σας η Βοσρά θα ερημωθεί και θα γίνει αντικείμενο φρίκης και χλευασμού και όλοι θα την καταριούνται. Επίσης όλες οι γύρω πόλεις των Εδωμιτών θα ερημωθούν για πάντα».

14 Άκουσα το μήνυμα που ο Κύριος έστειλε με μηνυτή στα έθνη: «Συναχθείτε», τους έλεγε, «και βαδίστε ενάντια στην Εδώμ, έτοιμοι να επιτεθείτε!»

15 «Εδωμίτες θα σας κάνω ασήμαντους ανάμεσα στα έθνη», λέει ο Κύριος, «κι όλος ο κόσμος θα σας περιφρονεί. 16 Δεν προκαλείτε τον τρόμο που νομίζετε· σας έχει εξαπατήσει η περηφάνια σας. Εσείς που κατοικείτε στις σχισμές των βράχων και κατέχετε τις βουνοκορφές, ακόμη κι αν πάτε να εγκατασταθείτε εκεί που ζει ο αετός, κι από ’κει πάνω θα σας κατεβάσω».

17 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Η Εδώμ τελείως θα ερειπωθεί. Με φρίκη θα τη βλέπει όποιος περνάει από ’κει· για την καταστροφή της θα τρομάζει, θα συγκλονίζεται. 18 Θα γίνει και μ’ αυτήν όπως έγινε όταν καταστράφηκαν τα Σόδομα και τα Γόμορρα και οι γύρω πόλεις. Κανένας δε θα κατοικήσει πια εκεί, ούτε θα μείνει σ’ αυτήν, ούτε για λίγο.

19 »Καθώς λιοντάρι από τη λόχμη του Ιορδάνη στα λιβάδια έρχεται τα πράσινα, έτσι ξάφνου θα εμφανιστώ κι εγώ· και τότε οι Εδωμίτες θα χαθούν από τη χώρα τους. Όποιος είναι ο εκλεκτός μου, αυτόν θα τον εγκαταστήσω αρχηγό εκεί. Ποιος είναι όμοιός μου και ποιος μπορεί να με προστάξει τι θα κάνω; Ποιος είναι ο ηγεμόνας, που θα μπορέσει να μου αντισταθεί;»

20 Γι’ αυτό, ακούστε του Κυρίου το σχέδιο, όπως το σκέφτηκε ενάντια στους Εδωμίτες, τα σχέδια που ετοίμασε ενάντια στους κατοίκους της Θαιμάν: Όλοι τους, ως και τα παιδιά τους, το δίχως άλλο στην αιχμαλωσία θα συρθούν σαν κοπάδι, το δίχως άλλο η χώρα θα εκκενωθεί. 21 Ο θόρυβος από την πτώση τους θα κάνει να σειστεί η γη, και οι θρηνωδίες τους ως την Ερυθρά Θάλασσα θ’ ακουστούν. 22 Ο εχθρός σαν τον αετό θα πετάξει μ’ απλωμένα τα φτερά του πάνω στη Βοσρά· τη μέρα εκείνη οι καρδιές των γενναίων πολεμιστών της Εδώμ θα χτυπούν τρομαγμένες, σαν την καρδιά γυναίκας που γεννάει.

23 Για τη Δαμασκό: Η Χαμάθ και η Αρφάδ μείναν κατάπληκτες απ’ την κακή την είδηση που άκουσαν. Η αγωνία τις σκεπάζει σαν ταραγμένη θάλασσα και δεν μπορούν να ησυχάσουν. 24 Οι κάτοικοι της Δαμασκού παρέλυσαν, γυρίζουνε να φύγουν, τους κυριεύει πανικός. Αγωνία και πόνοι τούς κατέχουν, σαν τη γυναίκα που γεννάει. 25 Η Δαμασκός, η φημισμένη πόλη της χαράς μου, γιατί δεν παραδόθηκε χωρίς πόλεμο;

26 «Τώρα οι νέοι της στα σοκάκια της θα θανατωθούν κι όλοι της οι πολεμιστές θα εξολοθρευτούνε την ημέρα εκείνη», λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος. 27 «Θα πυρπολήσω της Δαμασκού τα τείχη και η φωτιά θ’ αποτεφρώσει τα παλάτια του Βεν-Αδάδ».

28 Για την Κηδάρ και τα βασίλεια της Ασώρ, που τα είχε κυριέψει ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ.

Ο Κύριος διατάζει τους Βαβυλώνιους: «Σηκωθείτε κι επιτεθείτε στην Κηδάρ και καταστρέψτε τις φυλές που ζούνε στις στέπες της ανατολής. 29 Πάρτε τους τις σκηνές και τα κοπάδια τους· σηκώστε τα παραπετάσματά τους κι όλα τα σκεύη μέσα απ’ τις σκηνές τους. Πάρτε και τις καμήλες τους και πέστε στο λαό: "Τρόμος από παντού!"*Τρόμος από παντού. Βλ. υποσ. εις 6:25.

30 »Κάτοικοι της Ασώρ φύγετε!» λέει ο Κύριος. «Σκορπίστε, κρυφτείτε σε κρυψώνες και μείνετε εκεί, γιατί ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ έχει έτοιμες αποφάσεις και σχέδια εναντίον σας. 31 Σηκωθείτε, Βαβυλώνιοι», λέει ο Κύριος, «κι επιτεθείτε ενάντια σ’ αυτό το ανέμελο έθνος, που νόμιζε πως ζει με ασφάλεια. Οι πόλεις τους δεν έχουν πύλες ούτε αμπάρες. Ζουν εκεί απομονωμένοι. 32 Αρπάξτε τις καμήλες τους και πάρτε για λάφυρα τα κοπάδια τους. Εγώ ο Κύριος θα διασκορπίσω αυτούς με τα κομμένα μαλλιά σ’ όλες τις κατευθύνσεις των ανέμων· θα φέρω από παντού την καταστροφή τους. 33 Και θα γίνει η Ασώρ κρησφύγετο των τσακαλιών· θα ερημωθεί για πάντα. Ποτέ κανένας δε θα κατοικήσει εκεί ούτε θα πάει να μείνει έστω για λίγο».

34 Στην αρχή της βασιλείας του Σεδεκία στον Ιούδα, είπε ο Κύριος στον προφήτη Ιερεμία, σχετικά με την Ελάμ:

35 «Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέει: "θα συντρίψω την πρώτη δύναμη της Ελάμ, που είναι οι τοξότες της. 36 Θα φέρω εναντίον της τους τέσσερις ανέμους από τις τέσσερις άκρες του ουρανού, και θα διασκορπίσω τους κατοίκους της σ’ όλους αυτούς τους ανέμους· δε θα υπάρχει έθνος που να μην καταφύγουν κυνηγημένοι οι κάτοικοι της Ελάμ. 37 Θα τους κάνω να πανικοβληθούν μπροστά στους αιμοβόρους εχθρούς τους και θα τους καταστρέψω στο φοβερό θυμό μου. Θα εξαπολύσω πόλεμο εναντίον τους ωσότου τους αποτελειώσω. 38 Θα καταστρέψω βασιλιά και άρχοντες στην Ελάμ και θα στήσω το δικό μου θρόνο εκεί".*Υπονοείται η τοποθέτηση του θρόνου του Ναβουχοδονόσορ στην Ελάμ.

39 »Αργότερα όμως θ’ αλλάξω την τύχη των κατοίκων της Ελάμ», λέει ο Κύριος.

1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?*49.1 Concerning: or, Against*49.1 their king: or, Melcom 2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD. 3 Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.*49.3 their king: or, Melcom 4 Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?*49.4 thy…: or, thy valley floweth away 5 Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth. 6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.

7 Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished? 8 Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.*49.8 turn…: or, they are turned back 9 If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.*49.9 till…: Heb. their sufficiency 10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not. 11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me. 12 For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it. 13 For I have sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes. 14 I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle. 15 For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men. 16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD. 17 Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof. 18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it. 19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?*49.19 appoint me…: or, convent me in judgment? 20 Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them. 21 The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.*49.21 Red sea: Heb. Weedy sea 22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

23 Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.*49.23 fainthearted: Heb. melted*49.23 on…: or, as on the sea 24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail. 25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy! 26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts. 27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-hadad.

28 Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite, thus saith the LORD; Arise ye, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east. 29 Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Fear is on every side.

30 Flee, get you far off, dwell deep, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith the LORD; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you.*49.30 get…: Heb. flit greatly 31 Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.*49.31 wealthy: or, that is at ease 32 And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.*49.32 in…: Heb. cut off into corners, or, that have the corners of their hair polled 33 And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.

34 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying, 35 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might. 36 And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come. 37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them: 38 And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD.

39 But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD.
