1 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: «Πήγαινε ν’ αγοράσεις μια πήλινη στάμνα. Πάρε μαζί σου μερικούς από τους πρεσβυτέρους του λαού κι από τους ιερείς. 2 Έπειτα πήγαινε μαζί τους στην κοιλάδα Εννόμ, έξω απ’ των Συντριμμιών την πύλη κι εκεί ανάγγειλε το μήνυμα που θα σου πω.*Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 23:10. – των Συντριμμιών την πύλη: Πιθανώς ταυτόσημη με την πύλη της Κοπρίας, όπου έριχναν τα σκουπίδια της πόλης, στη ΝΑ γωνία του τείχους.

3 »Θα τους πεις: "το λόγο ακούστε του Κυρίου, οι βασιλιάδες του Ιούδα κι οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ. Λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ: Θα προξενήσω τέτοιες συμφορές σ’ αυτόν τον τόπο, ώστε όποιος τ’ ακούει να του έρχεται ζάλη. 4 Έπειδή με εγκατέλειψαν και μόλυναν τον τόπο αυτό και πρόσφεραν θυμίαμα εδώ σε ξένους θεούς, που δεν τους γνώριζαν ούτε αυτοί ούτε οι πρόγονοί τους ούτε του Ιούδα οι βασιλιάδες, και γέμισαν τον τόπο αυτό με αίμα αθώων ανθρώπων. 5 Στο Βάαλ καθιέρωσαν τόπους λατρευτικούς, να του προσφέρουν τα παιδιά τους ολοκαύτωμα, πράγμα που ποτέ μου δεν τους διέταξα ούτε που σκέφτηκα να τους το ζητήσω. 6 Για τούτο έρχονται μέρες, που αυτός εδώ ο τόπος δε θα ονομάζεται πια Τοφέθ ούτε κοιλάδα Εννόμ, αλλά Σφαγής πεδιάδα.*Τοφέθ ούτε κοιλάδα Εννόμ. Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 23:10.7 Θα ματαιώσω εδώ τα σχέδια των κατοίκων του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ· θα τους κάνω να πέσουν από το ξίφος των ανελέητων εχθρών και τα πτώματά τους θα τα δώσω τροφή στους γύπες και στις ύαινες. 8 Θα ερημώσω αυτή την πόλη και στη θέα της θ’ ανατριχιάζουν οι περαστικοί και θα φεύγουνε με αποστροφή μπροστά στις συμφορές της. 9 Οι ανελέητοι εχθροί τους θα τους πολιορκήσουν και τον κλοιό θα σφίξουν τόσο πολύ, που ο ένας θα τρώει τον άλλο· θα φάνε ακόμα και τις σάρκες των ίδιων των παιδιών τους".

10 »Τότε, εσύ Ιερεμία, θα σπάσεις τη στάμνα μπροστά στους άντρες που θα σε ακολουθούν. 11 Και θα τους πεις ότι εγώ ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέω: "όπως σπάζει κανείς την πήλινη στάμνα του αγγειοπλάστη και δεν είναι πια δυνατόν να επιδιορθωθεί, έτσι θα συντρίψω κι εγώ αυτόν το λαό κι αυτή την πόλη. Και θα τους θάβουνε ακόμα και στην Τοφέθ, γιατί δε θα υπάρχει αλλού τόπος για την ταφή τους. 12 Θα κάνω να υποστεί η πόλη αυτή και οι κάτοικοί της τα ίδια που γίναν’ στην Τοφέθ. 13 Όλα τα σπίτια της Ιερουσαλήμ και τα παλάτια των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα, που στις στέγες τους πρόσφεραν θυμίαμα στ’ αστέρια του ουρανού και έκαναν σπονδές σε θεούς ξένους, θα μολυνθούν από τα πτώματα όπως η Τοφέθ"».

14 Όταν επέστρεψε ο Ιερεμίας από την Τοφέθ, όπου ο Κύριος τον είχε στείλει να προφητέψει, στάθηκε στην αυλή του ναού του Κυρίου και είπε σ’ όλο το λαό: 15 «Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "θα φέρω στην πόλη ετούτη και στα περίχωρά της όλα τα δεινά που ανάγγειλα εναντίον της, γιατί δείξαν’ ισχυρογνωμοσύνη και δεν υπάκουσαν στα λόγια μου"».

1 Thus saith the LORD, Go and get a potter’s earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests; 2 And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee,*19.2 the east…: Heb. the sun gate 3 And say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle. 4 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents; 5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: 6 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter. 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. 8 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof. 9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.

10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee, 11 And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.*19.11 be made…: Heb. be healed 12 Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet: 13 And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods. 14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet, whither the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’s house; and said to all the people, 15 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.
