1 Ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ τοποθέτησε βασιλιά του Ιούδα το Σεδεκία, γιο του Ιωσία, στη θέση του Χονία, γιου του Ιωακίμ.*Βλ. Β΄ Βασ 24:8-17. Για τα γεγονότα που ακολουθούν βλ. Β΄ Βασ 24:18-20. – του Χονία. Άλλη μορφή του ονόματος «Ιωαχίν».2 Αλλά τότε ούτε ο Σεδεκίας ούτε οι αξιωματούχοι του ούτε ο λαός της χώρας άκουγαν αυτά που προανάγγελλε ο Κύριος με τον προφήτη Ιερεμία.

3 Ο βασιλιάς Σεδεκίας έστειλε τον Ιεουχάλ, γιο του Σελεμία και τον ιερέα Σοφονία, γιο του Μαασεΐα, στον προφήτη Ιερεμία για να του πουν: «Προσευχήσου, σε παρακαλούμε για μας στον Κύριο το Θεό μας». 4 Ο Ιερεμίας μπορούσε τότε να κινείται ελεύθερα ανάμεσα στο λαό· δεν είχε φυλακιστεί ακόμα. 5 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι που πολιορκούσαν την Ιερουσαλήμ, έμαθαν ότι ο στρατός του Φαραώ βγήκε από την Αίγυπτο, και γι’ αυτό αποσύρθηκαν από την Ιερουσαλήμ. 6 Τότε είπε ο Κύριος στον προφήτη Ιερεμία τι να απαντήσει στους απεσταλμένους του Σεδεκία: 7 «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "πηγαίνετε να πείτε στο βασιλιά του Ιούδα που σας έστειλε σ’ εμένα για να με ρωτήσετε: Ο στρατός του Φαραώ, που ερχόταν να σας βοηθήσει, γυρίζει πίσω στη χώρα του, την Αίγυπτο. 8 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι, λοιπόν, θα ξανάρθουν, θα επιτεθούν σ’ αυτή την πόλη, θα την καταλάβουν και θα την πυρπολήσουν. 9 Εγώ, ο Κύριος, σας το λέω: Μην πλανιέστε με τη σκέψη ότι οι Βαβυλώνιοι θα φύγουν στ’ αλήθεια από την πόλη. Δεν πρόκειται να φύγουν! 10 Κι αν ακόμα νικήσετε το στρατό των Βαβυλωνίων, που τώρα σας πολεμάει, και απομείνουν μερικοί μόνο τραυματισμένοι ανάμεσα στους εχθρούς, αυτοί θα σηκωθούν απ’ τις σκηνές τους και θα ’ρθούν να καταστρέψουν με τη φωτιά αυτή την πόλη"».

11 Ο στρατός των Βαβυλωνίων αποσύρθηκε από την Ιερουσαλήμ, επειδή πλησίαζε ο στρατός του Φαραώ.*Οι Βαβυλώνιοι εγκαταλείπουν την πολιορκία όχι για να φύγουν, αλλά για να επιτεθούν στο Φαραώ.12 Ο Ιερεμίας προσπάθησε τότε να βγει από την Ιερουσαλήμ για να πάει στην περιοχή της φυλής Βενιαμίν και να μοιράσει με τους συγγενείς του εκεί την οικογενειακή κληρονομιά του. 13 Όταν όμως έφτασε στην πύλη του Βενιαμίν, ο αρχηγός της φρουράς εκεί, ο Ιρεΐας, γιος του Σελεμία κι εγγονός του Ανανία, τον σταμάτησε, τον έπιασε και του είπε: «Εσύ πηγαίνεις στους Βαβυλώνιους!» 14 Ο Ιερεμίας απάντησε: «Ψέματα· δεν είμαι λιποτάκτης». Ο Ιρεΐας όμως δεν τον άκουσε· τον έπιασε και τον έφερε στους άρχοντες. 15 Οι άρχοντες οργίστηκαν εναντίον του Ιερεμία· διέταξαν να τον χτυπήσουν και τον φυλάκισαν στο σπίτι του γραμματέα Ιωνάθαν, που το είχαν μετατρέψει σε φυλακή. 16 Έβαλαν τον Ιερεμία σ’ έναν θολωτό υπόγειο χώρο, που προηγουμένως χρησίμευε για δεξαμενή, κι έμεινε εκεί για πολλές μέρες.

17 Μια μέρα ο βασιλιάς Σεδεκίας, έστειλε και πήρε τον Ιερεμία κρυφά στο σπίτι του και τον ρώτησε: «Υπάρχει κανένα μήνυμα από τον Κύριο;» Κι ο Ιερεμίας απάντησε: «Υπάρχει· εσύ θα παραδοθείς στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας». 18 Έπειτα ο Ιερεμίας ρώτησε το βασιλιά Σεδεκία: «Τι έγκλημα διέπραξα εναντίον σου ή εναντίον των αξιωματούχων σου ή του λαού αυτού και με φυλακίσατε; 19 Και πού είναι οι προφήτες σας που σας προφητεύουν και σας λένε ότι δε θα επιτεθεί ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας εναντίον σας και εναντίον αυτής της χώρας; 20 Σε παρακαλώ, λοιπόν τώρα, άκουσέ με, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά. Ας γίνει ευπρόσδεκτη η παράκλησή μου και μη με στείλεις πίσω στο σπίτι του γραμματέα Ιωνάθαν· αυτό θα είναι ο θάνατός μου».

21 Τότε ο βασιλιάς Σεδεκίας διέταξε κι έκλεισαν τον Ιερεμία στην αυλή της φρουράς και του έδιναν κάθε μέρα ένα καρβέλι ψωμί από τα αρτοπωλεία, όσο υπήρχε ψωμί στην πόλη. Έτσι έμεινε ο Ιερεμίας εκεί, στην αυλή της φρουράς.

6 Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7 Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land. 8 And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire. 9 Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.*37.9 yourselves: Heb. your souls 10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.*37.10 wounded: Heb. thrust through

11 And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,*37.11 broken…: Heb. made to ascend 12 Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.*37.12 separate…: or, to slip away from thence in the midst of the people 13 And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans. 14 Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.*37.14 false: Heb. falsehood, or, a lie 15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;*37.16 cabins: or, cells 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. 18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison? 19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land? 20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.*37.20 let…: Heb. let my supplication fall 21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
