(14:1–15:4)

1 Λόγια του Κυρίου προς τον Ιερεμία σχετικά με την ανομβρία.*Η φρ. αυτή επέχει θέση επιγραφής στην ενότητα 14:1–15:4, αλλά αναφέρεται ειδικά στα λόγια του Θεού στους στ. 14:10-12. 14-16 και 15:1-4.

2 Όλος ο Ιούδας πενθεί και οι πόλεις του αργοπεθαίνουν. Οι κάτοικοί του κάθονται καταγής θρηνώντας, η Ιερουσαλήμ φωνάζει για βοήθεια. 3 Οι ευγενείς της στέλνουν τους υπηρέτες για νερό. Εκείνοι έρχονται στις δεξαμενές, αλλά νερό δε βρίσκουν· επιστρέφουν με τα δοχεία τους αδειανά, το κεφάλι σκεπασμένο, απογοητευμένοι κι αποθαρρημένοι. 4 Η γη έχει σκάσει από την έλλειψη βροχής, οι γεωργοί απελπισμένοι έχουν σκεπάσει κι αυτοί πένθιμα το κεφάλι τους. 5 Ακόμα και το ελάφι γεννάει στο χωράφι και αφήνει το μικρό του εκεί, γιατί χορτάρι δεν υπάρχει. 6 Τ’ άγρια γαϊδούρια στέκονται στα ψηλώματα και τον αέρα οσμίζονται σαν τα τσακάλια· τα μάτια τους κουράζονται να ψάχνουν για χορτάρι, γιατί δε βρίσκουν πουθενά.

7 «Κύριε, οι ανομίες μας μαρτυρούν εναντίον μας! Βοήθησέ μας όμως, όπως μας υποσχέθηκες. Πολλές είναι οι αποστασίες μας, σ’ εσένα έχουμε αμαρτήσει. 8 Εσύ η μόνη ελπίδα του Ισραήλ, ο σωτήρας του στον καιρό της θλίψης, γιατί φέρνεσαι σαν να είσαι ξένος για τη χώρα, σαν ταξιδιώτης, που απλώς τη νύχτα του περνά σ’ αυτήν; 9 Γιατί στέκεις σαν αποσβολωμένος, σαν πολεμιστής αφοπλισμένος, που να βοηθήσει δεν μπορεί; Αλλά εσύ, Κύριε, είσαι ανάμεσά μας και σ’ εσένα ανήκουμε. Μη μας εγκαταλείψεις!»

10 Ο Κύριος μου είπε γι’ αυτό το λαό: «Επειδή τους αρέσει να περιπλανιούνται ξέφρενοι, γι’ αυτό εγώ, ο Κύριος, δεν είμαι ευχαριστημένος μαζί τους· δε θα ξεχάσω την ανομία τους και θα τιμωρήσω τις αμαρτίες τους. 11 Μην προσεύχεσαι πια για το λαό αυτόν να τελειώσει η δυστυχία του», μου είπε. 12 «Κι αν ακόμα νηστέψουνε δε θ’ ακούσω την ικεσία τους· ακόμη κι αν προσφέρουν ολοκαυτώματα κι αναίμακτες προσφορές, δε θα ευχαριστηθώ μ’ αυτές αλλά θα κάνω να εξοντωθούν με πόλεμο, με πείνα και με αρρώστια».

13 Τότε εγώ είπα: «Αχ, Κύριε, Θεέ! Οι προφήτες τούς λένε ότι δε θα δούνε πόλεμο, ούτε πείνα και τους υπόσχονται παντοτινή ειρήνη σ’ αυτό τον τόπο».

14 Κι ο Κύριος μου απάντησε: «Οι προφήτες αυτοί λένε ψέματα. Δεν είν’ αλήθεια ότι προφητεύουν στο όνομά μου. Δεν τους έστειλα εγώ ούτε τους πρόσταξα ούτε τους μίλησα εγώ. Σας μιλάνε για ψεύτικα οράματα και χρησμούς· σας λένε ανώφελα πράγματα, τα παραπλανητικά επινοήματα της φαντασίας τους. 15 Γι’ αυτό εγώ, ο Κύριος, προαναγγέλλω τι θα κάνω σ’ αυτούς τους προφήτες, που λένε ότι δε θα ’ρθει πόλεμος και πείνα στη χώρα: Με πόλεμο και με πείνα θα τους θανατώσω τους προφήτες αυτούς. 16 Το ίδιο και ο λαός που κάθεται κι ακούει τις προφητείες τους: Τα πτώματά τους θα διασκορπιστούν στους δρόμους της Ιερουσαλήμ εξαιτίας της πείνας και του πολέμου –τα πτώματα των γυναικών τους και των παιδιών τους. Και κανένας δε θα βρίσκεται για να τους θάψει. Εγώ θα τους τιμωρήσω για την κακία τους».

17 Ο Κύριος μου είπε ακόμη: «Πες τους αυτά τα λόγια: Τα μάτια μου χύνουν δάκρυα μέρα νύχτα ασταμάτητα, γιατί ο λαός μου πληγώθηκε βαριά και χτυπήθηκε σκληρά. 18 Βγαίνω στην πεδιάδα, βλέπω τους σκοτωμένους στον πόλεμο· μπαίνω στην πόλη, βλέπω τους νεκρούς από την πείνα. Ακόμα κι οι προφήτες και οι ιερείς τριγυρίζουν αδιάφοροι στη χώρα».

19 Εγώ απάντησα: «Κύριε, απέρριψες τελείως όλο τον Ιούδα; Μισείς το όρος της Σιών; Γιατί μας πλήγωσες και δεν μπορούμε να θεραπευτούμε; Περιμέναμε την ειρήνη, αλλά δεν ήρθε κανένα αγαθό· ελπίζαμε γιατρειά, αλλά μας βρήκε τρόμος. 20 Αναγνωρίζουμε την ασέβειά μας και την ανομία των προγόνων μας· αμαρτήσαμε ενώπιόν σου. 21 Μη μας περιφρονήσεις, για να μη δυσφημιστεί το όνομά σου. Μην καταστρέψεις το δοξασμένο θρόνο σου.*το δοξασμένο θρόνο σου. Έκφραση για την κιβωτό της διαθήκης και κατ’ επέκταση για το ναό και την πόλη της Ιερουσαλήμ. Θυμήσου τη διαθήκη που έκανες μαζί μας· μην την αθετήσεις. 22 Οι θεοί των εθνών δεν δίνουν τη βροχή· οι ουρανοί από μόνοι τους καταιγίδες δε στέλνουν. Κύριε, Θεέ μας, σ’ εσένα ελπίζουμε, γιατί εσύ είσαι ο μόνος που τα κάνεις όλα αυτά».

1 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.*14.1 the dearth: Heb. the words of the dearths, or, restraints 2 Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up. 3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads. 4 Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads. 5 Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass. 6 And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

7 O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee. 8 O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night? 9 Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.*14.9 we…: Heb. thy name is called upon us

10 Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins. 11 Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good. 12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

13 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.*14.13 assured…: Heb. peace of truth 14 Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.

17 Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow. 18 If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.*14.18 go about…: or, make merchandise against a land, and men acknowledge it not 19 Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble! 20 We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee. 21 Do not abhor us, for thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us. 22 Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.
