1 Ο Κύριος έδωσε σ’ εμένα τον Ιερεμία το παρακάτω μήνυμα: 2 «Ακούστε της διαθήκης μου τους όρους! Μίλα στο λαό του Ιούδα, στους κατοίκους της Ιερουσαλήμ, 3 και πες τους καθαρά ότι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, διακηρύττει: "καταραμένος να ’ναι όποιος δεν τηρεί της διαθήκης μου τους όρους!" 4 Και να ποια είναι η διαθήκη που έκανα με τους προγόνους σας, όταν τους έβγαλα από την κόλαση της Αιγύπτου:*κόλαση της Αιγύπτου. Το εβρ. έχει κατά λ. «καμίνι σιδήρου». Η φρ. δηλώνει την ανυπόφορη θερμότητα. Τους είπα ότι αν σ’ εμένα υπακούσουν και πράξουν όλα αυτά που τους διέταξα, τότε αυτοί θα είναι λαός μου κι εγώ Θεός τους. 5 Με την προϋπόθεση αυτή θα εκπλήρωνα την υπόσχεση που είχα δώσει με όρκο στους προγόνους σας, τη χώρα να τους δώσω που ρέει γάλα και μέλι. Έτσι έχετε εσείς σήμερα αυτή τη χώρα».

Τότε εγώ απάντησα: «Έτσι είναι, Κύριε». 6 Ύστερα ο Κύριος μου είπε: «Κήρυξε αυτό το μήνυμα που θα σου πω στις πόλεις του Ιούδα και μες στους δρόμους της Ιερουσαλήμ: "ακούστε τους όρους της διαθήκης αυτής και τηρήστε τους. 7 Κατηγορηματικά, επίμονα κι επανειλημμένα προειδοποίησα τους προγόνους σας, από τότε που τους έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο μέχρι σήμερα να υπακούουν σ’ εμένα. 8 Αλλά αυτοί δεν υπάκουσαν ούτε δώσανε καμιά προσοχή. Ακολούθησαν τις επιθυμίες της πονηρής καρδιάς τους· γι’ αυτό και τους τιμώρησα, σύμφωνα με τους όρους αυτής της διαθήκης, που τους είχα διατάξει να την εφαρμόσουν αλλά εκείνοι δεν την εφάρμοσαν"».

9 Μου είπε ακόμα ο Κύριος: «Οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ και του Ιούδα συνωμοτήσαν εναντίον μου. 10 Επέστρεψαν στις ανομίες των προπατόρων τους, που είχαν αρνηθεί να υπακούσουν τα λόγια μου. Έτσι κι αυτοί ακολούθησαν άλλους θεούς και τους λάτρεψαν. Οι Ισραηλίτες και οι κάτοικοι του Ιούδα παρέβηκαν τη διαθήκη μου που είχα συνάψει με τους προγόνους τους».

11 Γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος λέει: «Θα τους φέρω τέτοια καταστροφή, που να μην μπορούν να ξεφύγουν. Θα μου φωνάζουν για βοήθεια, αλλά δε θα τους ακούω. 12 Τότε οι πόλεις του Ιούδα κι οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ θα πάνε να ζητήσουν βοήθεια απ’ τους θεούς στους οποίους προσφέρουν θυσίες, αλλά αυτοί δε θα τους σώσουν τον καιρό της καταστροφής τους. 13 Γιατί όσες είναι οι πόλεις του Ιούδα, τόσοι είναι και οι θεοί τους· και όσοι είναι οι δρόμοι της Ιερουσαλήμ τόσα είναι και τα θυσιαστήρια όπου έχουν τοποθετηθεί τα αισχρά είδωλα του Βάαλ, στα οποία προσφέρουνε θυσίες. 14 Γι’ αυτό, Ιερεμία, μην προσεύχεσαι σ’ εμένα για τούτον το λαό· μη με παρακαλείς τόσο γι’ αυτόν. Δεν πρόκειται να τους ακούσω, όταν σ’ εμένα θα προσεύχονται τον καιρό της καταστροφής τους».

15 «Ο αγαπημένος μου λαός παίζει άσχημο παιχνίδι», λέει ο Κύριος. «Τι δουλειά έχουν αυτοί στο ναό μου; Μήπως νομίζουν ότι με τις θυσίες τους θα αποτρέψουν την καταστροφή κι ότι σύντομα μετά θα αλαλάζουν από χαρά;»*Απόδοση κατά τους Ο΄. Ο στ. στο εβρ. είναι ασαφής.

16 Όμορφη, καταπράσινη και καρποφόρα ελιά σε ονόμασε ο Κύριος· αλλά μες σε μεγάλο θόρυβο φωτιά θα βάλει στο φύλλωμά σου και τα κλαδιά σου θα κατακαούν. 17 Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, εκείνος που σε φύτεψε, αυτός και θα σε καταστρέψει· γιατί εσείς οι Ισραηλίτες και του Ιούδα οι κάτοικοι τον εαυτό σας βλάψατε κάνοντας το κακό, αφού εξοργίσατε τον Κύριο με τις θυσίες σας στο Βάαλ.

18 Ο Κύριος με πληροφόρησε και τότε έμαθα τι σχεδίαζαν εναντίον μου. 19 Εγώ ήμουν σαν το πρόβατο που είναι ήμερο, ακόμη κι όταν το οδηγούνε στη σφαγή, γιατί δεν ήξερα τα σχέδια τα κακά που ετοιμάζαν εναντίον μου. «Ελάτε», λέγανε, «να κόψουμε το δέντρο πάνω στον καρπό του! Να τον βγάλουμε από τη μέση και κανείς να μην τον θυμάται πια».

20 Αλλά, εσύ που κρίνεις δίκαια, Κύριε του σύμπαντος, και εξετάζεις τα αισθήματα και τις σκέψεις των ανθρώπων, κάνε να δω το πώς εσύ θα τους εκδικηθείς· σ’ εσένα έχω εμπιστευθεί την υπόθεσή μου.

21 Οι άντρες της Αναθώθ, γυρεύουν να με θανατώσουν και μου λένε: «Μην προφητέψεις στ’ όνομα του Κυρίου, για να μη σε σκοτώσουμε». 22 Γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέει γι’ αυτούς: «Εγώ θα τους τιμωρήσω! Οι νέοι τους θα σκοτωθούν στον πόλεμο, οι γιοι και οι κόρες τους θα πεθάνουν από πείνα. 23 Κανένας δε θα ζήσει, από τους άντρες της Αναθώθ, όταν θα επέμβω εναντίον τους για να τους καταστρέψω».

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2 Hear ye the words of this covenant, and speak unto the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem; 3 And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant, 4 Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God: 5 That I may perform the oath which I have sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. 18 And the LORD hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings. 19 But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.*11.19 the tree…: Heb. the stalk with his bread 20 But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause. 21 Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand: 22 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine:*11.22 punish: Heb. visit upon 23 And there shall be no remnant of them: for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.
