1 Ο Σεφατίας, γιος του Ματθάν, ο Γεδαλίας, γιος του Πασχούρ, ο Ιεουχάλ, γιος του Σελεμία, και ο Πασχώλ, γιος του Μαλχία, άκουσαν τον Ιερεμία να λέει στο λαό: 2 «Ο Κύριος λέει: "όποιος μείνει σ’ αυτή την πόλη θα σκοτωθεί στον πόλεμο ή θα πεθάνει από την πείνα και τις ασθένειες. Όποιος όμως βγει έξω και παραδοθεί στους Βαβυλώνιους δεν θα σκοτωθεί και τουλάχιστο θα σώσει τη ζωή του. 3 Η πόλη αυτή θα παραδοθεί εξάπαντος στο στρατό του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας κι αυτός θα την κυριέψει"». 4 Τότε οι άρχοντες είπαν στο βασιλιά: «Ο άνθρωπος αυτός πρέπει να πεθάνει, γιατί με όσα λέει αποθαρρύνει όλο το λαό και τους άνδρες που έχουν απομείνει στην πόλη αυτή για να πολεμήσουν. Αυτός ο άνθρωπος δεν θέλει το καλό του λαού· θέλει το κακό του».

5 Ο Σεδεκίας είπε: «Κάντε του ό,τι θέλετε· εγώ δεν μπορώ να σας εμποδίσω». 6 Έπιασαν τότε τον Ιερεμία και τον έριξαν στη δεξαμενή του Μαλχία, γιου του βασιλιά,*γιου του βασιλιά. Βλ. υποσ. εις Α΄ Βασ 22:26. που βρισκόταν στην αυλή της φρουράς. Τον κατέβασαν κάτω με σχοινιά· στον πυθμένα δεν υπήρχε νερό αλλά λάσπη και βύθισαν τον προφήτη σ’ αυτήν.

7 Ένας Αιθίοπας που ονομαζόταν Εβέδ-Μέλεχ κι ήταν αξιωματούχος στο παλάτι του βασιλιά, όταν άκουσε ότι έβαλαν τον Ιερεμία στη δεξαμενή κι ενώ ο βασιλιάς καθόταν και δίκαζε στην πύλη του Βενιαμίν, 8 έτρεξε έξω απ’ το παλάτι και του είπε: 9 «Κύριέ μου, βασιλιά, είναι λάθος αυτό που έκαναν οι άνθρωποι αυτοί στον προφήτη Ιερεμία. Τον έχουν ρίξει στη δεξαμενή και θα πεθάνει εκεί μέσα από την πείνα, γιατί δεν υπάρχει πια ψωμί στην πόλη».

10 Τότε ο βασιλιάς έδωσε διαταγή στον Εβέδ-Μέλεχ και του είπε: «Πάρε μαζί σου τριάντα άνδρες και βγάλε τον προφήτη από τη δεξαμενή πριν πεθάνει». 11 Ο Εβέδ-Μέλεχ μ’ αυτούς τους άντρες μπήκε στο παλάτι του βασιλιά. Πήρε από την αποθήκη παλιά και σκισμένα ρούχα και τα κατέβασε με σκοινιά στη δεξαμενή, στον Ιερεμία, 12 και του είπε: «Βάλε, σε παρακαλώ Ιερεμία, αυτά τα κουρέλια κάτω από τις μασχάλες σου κι από κάτω βάλε τα σκοινιά». Έτσι κι έκανε ο Ιερεμίας. 13 Τότε τον τράβηξαν με τα σκοινιά και τον έβγαλαν έξω από τη δεξαμενή, και έμεινε ο Ιερεμίας στην αυλή της φρουράς.

14 Ο βασιλιάς Σεδεκίας έστειλε και κάλεσε κοντά του τον προφήτη Ιερεμία, στην τρίτη είσοδο του ναού του Κυρίου, και του είπε: «Θα σε ρωτήσω ένα πράγμα, και πρόσεξε μη μου κρύψεις τίποτα». 15 Ο Ιερεμίας του λέει: «Είσαι βέβαιος πως αν σου το φανερώσω δε θα με σκοτώσεις και πως αν σε συμβουλέψω θα με ακούσεις;» 16 Τότε ο βασιλιάς Σεδεκίας υποσχέθηκε με όρκο εμπιστευτικά στον Ιερεμία τα εξής: «Μα τον αληθινό Θεό, που μας έδωσε τη ζωή, δε θα σε σκοτώσω ούτε θα σε παραδώσω στα χέρια αυτών που ζητούν να σε σκοτώσουν».

17 Τότε είπε ο Ιερεμίας στο Σεδεκία: «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "αν πράγματι βγεις και παραδοθείς στους άρχοντες του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας, θα ζήσεις εσύ και η οικογένειά σου, κι αυτή η πόλη δε θα πυρποληθεί. 18 Αν όμως δε βγεις να παραδοθείς στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας, τότε θα παραδοθεί η πόλη στους Βαβυλώνιους που θα την πυρπολήσουν, αλλά κι εσύ δε θα ξεφύγεις από τα χέρια τους"».

19 Τότε είπε ο βασιλιάς στον Ιερεμία: «Φοβάμαι τους Ιουδαίους που προσχώρησαν στους Βαβυλώνιους, μήπως πέσω στα χέρια τους κι αυτοί με γελοιοποιήσουν».

20 Ο Ιερεμίας του είπε: «Δε θα σε παραδώσουν σ’ αυτούς· υπάκουσε, λοιπόν, στα λόγια του Κυρίου, που σου μεταφέρω και θα σου βγει σε καλό· θα επιβιώσεις. 21 Αν όμως αρνηθείς να παραδοθείς, ο Κύριος μου έχει δείξει αυτό το όραμα: 22 Όλες οι γυναίκες που απομένουν στο παλάτι του βασιλιά του Ιούδα θα συρθούν στους άρχοντες του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας και θα λένε για σένα:

"Ξεγέλασαν το βασιλιά

οι πιο καλοί του φίλοι

και γίναν’ απ’ αυτόν πιο ισχυροί·

κι όταν τον είδαν με τα πόδια του στη λάσπη,

τον άφησαν εκεί να βυθιστεί".

23 Όλες οι γυναίκες σου, λοιπόν, και τα παιδιά σου θα συρθούν στους Βαβυλώνιους κι εσύ δεν θα γλιτώσεις από τα χέρια τους· θα πέσεις στα χέρια του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας κι ετούτη εδώ η πόλη θα πυρποληθεί».

24 Τότε είπε ο Σεδεκίας στον Ιερεμία: «Να μη μάθει κανείς όσα συζητήσαμε, για να μη σε σκοτώσουν. 25 Αν μάθουν οι αξιωματούχοι ότι μίλησα μαζί σου, θα έρθουν και θα σε ρωτάνε: "για πες μας, τι είπες στο βασιλιά; Μη μας το κρύψεις, γιατί θα σε σκοτώσουμε! Τι σου είπε ο βασιλιάς;" 26 Τότε εσύ θα τους απαντήσεις: "πήγα και παρακάλεσα το βασιλιά να μη με ξαναστείλει στο σπίτι του Ιωνάθαν, για να μην πεθάνω εκεί"».

27 Ήρθαν, λοιπόν, οι αξιωματούχοι στον Ιερεμία και άρχισαν τις ερωτήσεις. Αυτός τους απάντησε σύμφωνα με όσα τον είχε διατάξει ο βασιλιάς. Έτσι σταμάτησαν να τον ρωτούν, αφού κανείς δεν είχε ακούσει τη συνομιλία. 28 Ο Ιερεμίας έμεινε στην αυλή της φρουράς ως τη μέρα που κυριεύτηκε η Ιερουσαλήμ· βρισκόταν εκεί όταν η πόλη κυριεύτηκε.

1 Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying, 2 Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live. 3 Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it. 4 Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.*38.4 welfare: Heb. peace 5 Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you. 6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. 7 Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin; 8 Ebed-melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king, saying, 9 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.*38.9 he is like…: Heb. he will die 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.*38.10 with thee: Heb. in thine hand 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so. 13 So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

14 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.*38.14 third: or, principal 15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me? 16 So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life. 17 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house: 18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand. 19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me. 20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live. 21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me: 22 And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.*38.22 Thy friends: Heb. 24 Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die. 25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee: 26 Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there. 27 Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.*38.27 they…: Heb. they were silent from him 28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
