1 Ο Κύριος μίλησε στον προφήτη Ιερεμία σχετικά με την πόλη της Βαβυλώνας και με τη χώρα των Βαβυλωνίων:

2 Στείλτε διακήρυξη στα έθνη! Κάντε σινιάλο με σημαίες! Κηρύξτε το και τίποτα μην κρύψετε. Πείτε ότι κυριεύτηκε η Βαβυλώνα! Ντροπιάστηκαν τα είδωλά της, συντρίφθηκαν οι βδελυροί θεοί της. Ντροπή για τον Βηλ, συντριβή για τον Μαρδούκ. 3 Ένα έθνος απ’ το βορρά*απ’ το βορρά. Στη σκέψη του προφήτη ο βορράς είναι συχνά η κατεύθυνση απ’ όπου προέρχονται όλα τα δεινά (βλ. κεφ. 1:14 και υποσ.) Εδώ όμως ο όρος λαμβάνεται μεταφορικώς, δεδομένου ότι ο προαναγγελλόμενος εχθρός, που πιθανώς είναι οι Πέρσες, ήρθε από τα νοτιοανατολικά της Βαβυλώνας. έρχεται εναντίον της. Θα την ερημώσει, έτσι που κανένας πια δε θα κατοικεί σ’ αυτήν· άνθρωποι και ζώα θα φύγουν και θα διασκορπιστούν.

4 «Όταν θα έρθει εκείνος ο καιρός», λέει ο Κύριος, «θα επιστρέψουν οι κάτοικοι του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα μαζί, και θα ’ρθουν κλαίγοντας ν’ αναζητήσουν τον Κύριο, το Θεό τους. 5 Θα ρωτήσουν για το δρόμο προς τη Σιών και θα πάνε σ’ αυτήν λέγοντας: "ελάτε να ενωθούμε με τον Κύριο με διαθήκη αιώνια, που δε θα τη λησμονήσουμε ποτέ". 6 Χαμένο κοπάδι κατάντησε ο λαός μου. Οι βοσκοί τους τούς παραπλάνησαν. Τους οδήγησαν στα βουνά και τους τριγύριζαν από βουνό σε βουνό, έτσι που ξέχασαν το μαντρί τους. 7 Όλοι όσοι τους συναντούσαν τους κατασπάραζαν. Οι εχθροί τους έλεγαν: "τι φταίμε εμείς αν αυτοί αμάρτησαν στον Κύριο, που είναι η πηγή της δικαιοσύνης, η ελπίδα των προγόνων τους;"»

8 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Φύγετε απ’ τη Βαβυλώνα! Βγείτε απ’ τη χώρα των Βαβυλωνίων! Βιαστείτε να βγείτε πρώτοι, όπως τα τραγιά, μπροστά απ’ το κοπάδι. 9 Εγώ θα ξεσηκώσω και θα φέρω ενάντια στη Βαβυλώνα πολλά και μεγάλα έθνη απ’ το βορρά, που θα της επιτεθούν και θα την κυριέψουν. Όλοι αυτοί είναι καλοί πολεμιστές· κανένα βέλος τους δεν ξεστοχάει. 10 Η Βαβυλώνα θα γίνει λάφυρό τους κι αυτοί που θα τη λεηλατήσουν θα χορτάσουν λάφυρα!

11 »Εμπρός! Χαρείτε, πανηγυρίστε, Βαβυλώνιοι, που λεηλατήσατε την ιδιοκτησία μου. Τώρα χοροπηδάτε σαν τα μοσχάρια στη χλόη και χρεμετίζετε σαν τ’ άλογα τα δυνατά. 12 Αλλά η μάνα σας η Βαβυλώνα θα καταντροπιαστεί· περίγελως θα γίνει αυτή που σας γέννησε· θα καταντήσει το τελευταίο από τα έθνη. Θα γίνει έρημος ξερή κι αδιάβατη. 13 Θα μείνει ακατοίκητη και θα ερημωθεί απ’ άκρη σ’ άκρη, γιατί ο Κύριος οργίστηκε. Όποιος θα περνάει από τη Βαβυλώνα θα τα χάνει, θα νιώθει φρίκη για όλες τις πληγές της».

14 Παραταχθείτε ολόγυρα ενάντια στη Βαβυλώνα! Όσοι κρατάτε τόξο τοξέψτε εναντίον της! Μη λυπηθείτε τα βέλη, γιατί αμάρτησε στον Κύριο. 15 Αλαλάξτε ολόγυρά της! Παραδόθηκε! Έπεσαν οι πύργοι της, γκρεμίστηκαν τα τείχη της! Αυτό είναι η εκδίκηση του Κυρίου. Εκδικηθείτε την· κάντε της ό,τι έκανε κι αυτή στους άλλους! 16 Μην αφήσετε κανέναν ζωντανό στη Βαβυλώνα, που θα μπορούσε να σπείρει ή να θερίσει με το δρεπάνι τον καιρό του θερισμού. Από τη φρίκη του πολέμου οι ξένοι θα φύγουν για τη χώρα τους, θα γυρίσουν στο λαό τους.

17 Ο Ισραήλ είναι σαν το χαμένο πρόβατο, που το ’χουν κυνηγήσει τα λιοντάρια. Πρώτα του επιτέθηκε ο βασιλιάς της Ασσυρίας, έπειτα ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας, ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ, τού σύντριψε τα κόκαλα. 18 Γι’ αυτό, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: «Θα τιμωρήσω το βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας και τη χώρα του, όπως τιμώρησα το βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας. 19 Τον Ισραήλ όμως θα τον ξαναφέρω στη μάντρα του· θα βοσκήσει στο όρος Κάρμηλος και στη Βασάν και τίποτα δε θα του λείψει απ’ ό,τι παράγεται στο βουνό του Εφραΐμ και στην περιοχή της Γαλαάδ.*Όλες αυτές οι περιοχές βρίσκονται στο βόρειο βασίλειο.20 Εκείνο τον καιρό, μάταια θ’ αναζητάει κανείς την ανομία στο βασίλειο του Ισραήλ και την αμαρτία στο βασίλειο του Ιούδα· δε θα τις βρίσκει· θα συγχωρήσω όσους αφήσω να ζήσουν».

21 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Επιτεθείτε εναντίον της χώρας Μεραθαΐμ και εναντίον των κατοίκων της Φεκώδ!*Μεραθαΐμ...Φεκώδ. Και οι δυο τοποθεσίες είναι περιοχές στη συμβολή των ποταμών Τίγρη και Ευφράτη. Εδώ υποδηλούν ολόκληρο το βαβυλωνιακό κράτος. Θανατώστε τους, καταστρέψτε τους τελείως· καθετί που μένει πίσω τους προσφέρετέ το αφιέρωμα στον Κύριο. Κάνετε όλα όσα σας διέταξα».

22 Θόρυβος πολέμου ακούστηκε στη χώρα, καταστροφή έγινε μεγάλη. 23 Πώς κομματιάστηκε το σφυρί που σύντριβε όλη τη γη! Πώς έγινε η Βαβυλώνα θέαμα αποτρόπαιο ανάμεσα στα έθνη!

24 «Εγώ σου έστησα παγίδα, Βαβυλώνα», λέει ο Κύριος. «Πιάστηκες δίχως να το καταλάβεις· βρέθηκες μέσα της παγιδευμένη, γιατί αντιστάθηκες σ’ εμένα τον Κύριο».

25 Ο Θεός, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, άνοιξε την οπλοθήκη του και έβγαλε τα όπλα της οργής του,*τα όπλα της οργής του. Εννοούνται τα ξένα έθνη, που ο Κύριος τα συναθροίζει εναντίον της Βαβυλώνος. γιατί αυτό είναι το έργο του στη χώρα των Βαβυλωνίων.

26 «Επιτεθείτε εναντίον της από τα πέρατα της γης!» τα πρόσταξε. «Τις αποθήκες της ανοίξτε, κάντε την σωρούς ερείπια· καταστρέψτε την ως ανάθεμα στον Κύριο. Τίποτα να μη μείνει απ’ αυτήν! 27 Σφάξτε όλους τους νέους! Οδηγήστε τους σαν τα μοσχάρια στη σφαγή. Αλίμονό τους! Ήρθε η μέρα τους, ο καιρός που θα πληρώσουν για τις πράξεις τους!»

28 Ακούστε! Αυτοί που γλίτωσαν από τη Βαβυλώνα έφυγαν κι ήρθαν ν’ αναγγείλουν στη Σιών την εκδίκηση του Κυρίου, του Θεού μας, την εκδίκηση γι’ αυτά που είχαν κάνει στο ναό του.

29 Συγκαλέστε όλους τους τοξότες ενάντια στη Βαβυλώνα! Στρατοπεδέψτε ολόγυρα εναντίον της! Κανένας απ’ αυτήν να μην ξεφύγει! Ανταποδώστε της ανάλογα με τα έργα της, γιατί περηφανεύτηκε απέναντι στον Κύριο, στον Άγιο Θεό του Ισραήλ. 30 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Γι’ αυτό οι νέοι της θα φονευθούν στα σοκάκια της, θα εξαφανιστούν εκείνη την ημέρα.

31 »Είμαι εναντίον σου, υπερήφανη Βαβυλώνα», λέει ο Θεός, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος. «Έφτασε η μέρα σου, ο καιρός που θα πληρώσεις για τις πράξεις σου. 32 Η περήφανη Βαβυλώνα θα σκοντάψει και θα πέσει και κανένας δε θα βρίσκεται να τη σηκώσει· θα βάλω φωτιά στις πόλεις της, που θα καταφάει και όλα τα περίχωρά της».

33 Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέει: «Οι κάτοικοι του Ισραήλ, μαζί και του Ιούδα, καταδυναστεύτηκαν. Όλοι αυτοί που τους αιχμαλώτισαν, τους κρατούν με τη βία· αρνούνται να τους ελευθερώσουν. 34 Εγώ, ο λυτρωτής τους όμως είμαι δυνατός. Κύριος του σύμπαντος είναι το όνομά μου. Θα τους υποστηρίξω εξάπαντος στη δίκη τους, για να ειρηνέψω τη χώρα και να φέρω τρόμο στους κατοίκους της Βαβυλώνας».

35 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Θάνατος στους Βαβυλώνιους, στους κατοίκους της πρωτεύουσας, στους άρχοντές της και στους σοφούς της! 36 Θάνατος στους μάντεις της! Θα χάσουν το μυαλό τους. Θάνατος στους πολεμιστές της! Θα κατατρομάξουν. 37 Θάνατος στ’ άλογά τους, στις άμαξές τους και σ’ όλο το ανάμικτο πλήθος, που βρίσκεται μαζί τους! Θα δειλιάσουν σαν τις γυναίκες. Καταστροφή στους θησαυρούς τους! Θα διαρπαχθούν. 38 Ξηρασία στα νερά τους! Να στερέψουν. Γιατί είναι χώρα ειδώλων· με τα είδωλά τους έχουν πλανηθεί. 39 Γι’ αυτό θα κατοικήσουν σ’ αυτήν αγριόγατες, τσακάλια και στρουθοκάμηλοι· δε θα κατοικηθεί ποτέ πια στο μέλλον από ανθρώπους. 40 Όπως καταστράφηκαν τα Σόδομα και τα Γόμορρα και τα περίχωρά τους, έτσι θα συμβεί και με τη Βαβυλώνα: Κανένας δε θα ξανακατοικήσει πια σ’ αυτήν, ούτε θα θέλει να μείνει εκεί», λέει ο Κύριος.

41 Ένας λαός έρχεται απ’ το βορρά· έθνος μεγάλο και βασιλιάδες δυνατοί θα ξεσηκωθούν από τις άκρες της γης.*Για το βορρά, βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 3. – Η ίδια απειλή που στρέφεται εναντίον του Ιούδα στο κεφ. 6:22-24, εδώ στρέφεται εναντίον της Βαβυλώνος.42 Τόξο και ακόντιο θα κρατούν· είναι σκληροί και άσπλαχνοι, είναι καβάλα στ’ άλογα κι ο θόρυβος που κάνουν ακούγεται σαν τη βουή της θάλασσας· παρατάσσονται για μάχη εναντίον σου, ωραία Βαβυλώνα! 43 Ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας άκουσε την είδηση και παρέλυσαν τα χέρια του. Τον κατέλαβε αγωνία και τον έπιασαν πόνοι, σαν τη γυναίκα που είναι να γεννήσει.

44 «Καθώς λιοντάρι από τη λόχμη του Ιορδάνη στα πράσινα λιβάδια έρχεται, έτσι ξάφνου θα εμφανιστώ κι εγώ· και τότε εκείνοι θα χαθούν από τη χώρα τους. Όποιος είναι ο εκλεκτός μου, αυτόν θα τον εγκαταστήσω αρχηγό εκεί. Ποιος είναι όμοιός μου; Και ποιος μπορεί να με προστάξει τι να κάνω; Ποιος είναι ο ηγεμόνας, που θα μπορέσει να μου αντισταθεί;»

45 Γι’ αυτό ακούστε του Κυρίου το σχέδιο, όπως το σκέφτηκε ενάντια στη Βαβυλώνα, τα σχέδια που ετοίμασε ενάντια στους κατοίκους αυτής της χώρας. Όλοι τους, ως και τα παιδιά τους, το δίχως άλλο στην αιχμαλωσία θα συρθούν σαν κοπάδι· το δίχως άλλο η χώρα τους θα εκκενωθεί. 46 Ο θόρυβος από την πτώση της Βαβυλώνας θα κάνει να σειστεί η γη, και η θρηνωδία της στα έθνη θ’ ακουστεί.

4 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. 5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. 6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.*50.6 restingplace: Heb. place to lie down in 7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers. 8 Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.

9 For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain.*50.9 expert…: or, destroyer 10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD. 11 Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls;*50.11 fat: Heb. big, or, corpulent*50.11 bellow…: or, neigh as steeds 12 Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. 13 Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. 14 Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD. 15 Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her. 16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.*50.16 sickle: or, scythe

17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. 18 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. 19 And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead. 20 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.

21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.*50.21 of Merathaim: or, of the rebels*50.21 Pekod: or, Visitation 22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. 23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD. 25 The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord GOD of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans. 26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.*50.26 from…: Heb. from the end*50.26 cast…: or, tread her 27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation. 28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple. 29 Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel. 30 Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD. 31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.*50.31 most…: Heb. pride 32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.*50.32 the…: Heb. pride

33 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. 34 Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. 36 A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.*50.36 liars: or, chief stays: Heb. bars 37 A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed. 38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols. 39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. 40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. 41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. 42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. 43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. 44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?*50.44 appoint me…: or, convent me to plead? 45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them. 46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
