1 Ακούστε, Ισραηλίτες, το μήνυμα που σας απευθύνει ο Κύριος! 2 «Μην ακολουθείτε τα έθιμα των εθνών», λέει ο Κύριος, «και μη φοβάστε από τα ασυνήθιστα φαινόμενα του ουρανού· τα έθνη φοβούνται απ’ αυτά. 3 Οι θρησκευτικές πεποιθήσεις των εθνών είναι παράλογες: Κόβουν ένα ξύλο από το δάσος και το επεξεργάζονται οι ξυλουργοί με το σκαρπέλο. 4 Το διακοσμούν με ασήμι και χρυσάφι, και το καρφώνουν στέρεα με τα σφυριά για να μην κουνιέται. 5 Σαν σκιάχτρο σε αγγουρόκηπο είναι οι θεοί τους· δε μιλούν· έχουν ανάγκη να υποβαστάζονται, γιατί δεν μπορούν να βαδίσουν. Μην τους φοβάστε γιατί δεν μπορούν να κάνουν ούτε κακό ούτε καλό».

6 Κύριε, όμοιος μ’ εσένα δεν υπάρχει! Είσαι μεγάλος και μεγάλη είναι η φήμη σου που λέει για τη δύναμή σου. 7 Ποιος δεν θα σε τιμούσε, βασιλιά των εθνών; Σ’ εσένα δικαιωματικά ανήκει η τιμή. Ανάμεσα σε όλους τους σοφούς των εθνών και σ’ όλα τα βασίλεια όμοιος μ’ εσένα δεν υπάρχει.

8 Όλοι αυτοί είναι εντελώς ανόητοι· τι θα μπορούσαν να διδαχτούν από τα ξύλινα είδωλα; 9 Τα είδωλά τους είναι καλυμμένα με ασήμι, που το ’χουν φέρει από τη Θαρσείς, και με χρυσό από την Ουφάζ, έργα τεχνίτη των μετάλλων. Είναι ντυμένα με γαλάζιο και με κόκκινο ένδυμα· όλα αυτά είναι έργα επιδέξιων τεχνητών. 10 Αλλά ο Κύριος είναι Θεός αληθινός, Θεός ζωντανός και βασιλιάς αιώνιος, που πάνω στην οργή του τραντάζει τη γη και που τα έθνη δεν μπορούν ν’ αντέξουν το θυμό του.

11 Εσείς, Ισραηλίτες θα λέτε για τους ξένους θεούς: «Οι θεοί που δεν έφτιαξαν τον ουρανό και τη γη δεν έχουν θέση στον ουρανό και πρέπει να αφανιστούν από τη γη».

12 Ο Κύριος έκανε τη γη αποδεικνύοντας τη δύναμή του, στερέωσε την οικουμένη δείχνοντας τη σοφία του, και άπλωσε τους ουρανούς φανερώνοντας τη σύνεσή του. 13 Με τη φωνή του το νερό μαζεύεται πάνω από τον ουρανό κι από τις άκριες της γης τα σύννεφα ανεβαίνουν· δημιουργεί τις αστραπές, δρόμο ν’ ανοίξει στη βροχή κι από τις αποθήκες του τον άνεμο τον βγάζει. 14 Μπροστά σε όλα αυτά κάθε άνθρωπος μένει κατάπληκτος. Κάθε τεχνίτης που φτιάχνει είδωλα νιώθει ντροπή για τα κατασκευάσματά του, γιατί είναι ψεύτικα, χυτά, και δεν υπάρχει μέσα τους πνοή. 15 Είναι ένα τίποτα, έργα γελοία· όταν ο Κύριος έρθει τιμωρός, αυτά θ’ αφανιστούν. 16 Πόσο είναι διαφορετικός ο Θεός του Ιακώβ! Αυτός δημιούργησε τα πάντα, και διάλεξε τους Ισραηλίτες να ’ναι λαός του. Το όνομά του είναι "Κύριος του σύμπαντος".

17 Ιερουσαλήμ, πολιορκημένη πόλη, ας μαζέψουν οι κάτοικοί σου ό,τι τους έχει απομείνει. 18 Γιατί ο Κύριος λέει: «Αυτή τη φορά θα οδηγήσω αιχμαλώτους τους κατοίκους της χώρας· θα τους ταλαιπωρήσω για να πάρουν ένα καλό μάθημα».*θα τους ταλαιπωρήσω... μάθημα. Η ερμηνεία του εβρ. είναι αβέβαιη.

19 «Αλίμονό μου! Καταστράφηκα!» φωνάζει η Ιερουσαλήμ. «Αγιάτρευτες είν’ οι πληγές μου. Στην αρχή νόμισα πως θα ήταν κάποια αρρώστια που θα την ξεπερνούσα. 20 Τώρα όμως η σκηνή μου ερημώθηκε, κόπηκαν όλα τα σκοινιά· φύγαν από κοντά μου τα παιδιά μου και δεν υπάρχει πια κανείς να ξαναστήσει τη σκηνή μου, να τεντώσει τα παραπετάσματά μου απ’ την αρχή». 21 Ανόητοι αποδειχτήκαν οι βοσκοί! Δεν αναζήτησαν τον Κύριο, γι’ αυτό και δεν προκόψανε· όλα τους τα κοπάδια σκορπιστήκαν.

22 Ακούστε! Μια φήμη διαδίδεται. Βουητό μεγάλο έρχεται απ’ το βορρά,*απ’ το βορρά. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 1:14. τις πόλεις να ερημώσει του Ιούδα και να τις κάνει τόπο τσακαλιών.

23 Κύριε, το ξέρω πως κανένας άνθρωπος τη μοίρα του δεν την ορίζει, κανένας δεν μπορεί να ελέγξει της ζωής του την κατεύθυνση. 24 Κύριε, διόρθωσέ μας αλλά δίκαια· όχι όταν είσαι θυμωμένος, για να μη μας φέρεις στο μηδέν.

25 Άφησε το θυμό σου να στραφεί στα έθνη που δε σε γνωρίζουν και στους ανθρώπους που δε σε επικαλούνται· γιατί αυτοί κατασπαράξαν το λαό σου, τον εξουθένωσαν κι ερήμωσαν τη χώρα του.

Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. 6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. 7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.*10.7 to…: or, it liketh thee 8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.*10.8 altogether: Heb. in one, or, at once 9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men. 10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.*10.10 true…: Heb. 17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.*10.17 inhabitant: Heb. inhabitress 18 For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.

19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it. 20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains. 21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered. 22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. 24 O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.*10.24 bring…: Heb. diminish me 25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.
