1 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Βαδίστε μέσ’ από τους δρόμους της Ιερουσαλήμ· καλά κοιτάξτε και ψάξτε στις πλατείες της! Αν βρείτε έστω κι έναν άνθρωπο να κάνει το σωστό και ν’ αναζητάει την αλήθεια, τότε εγώ θα συγχωρήσω την αμαρτία της πόλης. 2 Κι όμως, ακόμη και όταν ορκίζονται στο όνομά μου, σίγουρα ψέματα ορκίζονται».

3 Κύριε, δεν είναι η εντιμότητα το μόνο που σ’ ενδιαφέρει; Τους χτύπησες αλλά αυτοί δεν νοιάστηκαν· τους σύντριψες αλλά δε διορθώθηκαν· αντίθετα, αποδείχτηκαν πιο πεισματάρηδες κι αρνήθηκαν να επιστρέψουνε σ’ εσένα. 4 Τότε εγώ σκέφτηκα: Αυτοί είναι φτωχοί κι αγράμματοι, οπότε δεν ξέρουν το δρόμο του Κυρίου, τις εντολές του Θεού. 5 Θα πάω, λοιπόν, στους ισχυρούς να τους μιλήσω. Αυτοί ασφαλώς θα ξέρουν το δρόμο του Κυρίου και τις εντολές του Θεού τους. Αλλά κι αυτοί, ακόμη περισσότερο αρνήθηκαν να υπακούσουν στον Κύριο· έφυγαν μακριά του, λες κι ήτανε βαριά δεσμά οι εντολές του.

6 «Γι’ αυτό του δάσους θα τους φάνε τα λιοντάρια», λέει ο Κύριος, «λύκοι από την έρημο θα τους κατασπαράξουν· παρδάλεις θα παραμονεύουνε στις πόλεις τους. Όποιον βγαίνει έξω απ’ αυτές θα τον ξεσκίζουν, γιατί πληθύναν οι ανομίες τους κι οι αποστασίες τους αυξήθηκαν».*Τα άγρια θηρία που αναφέρονται στο στίχο είναι παρομοιώσεις του εχθρού.

7 Λέει ο Κύριος: «Πώς να σας συγχωρήσω για όλα αυτά; Τα παιδιά σας μ’ εγκατέλειψαν και σε θεούς ορκίστηκαν που δεν ήταν θεοί. Εγώ τους χόρτασα, εκείνοι όμως μοίχευαν και τρέχανε στα σπίτια των πορνών. 8 Είναι σαν τα καλοθρεμμένα, τα βαρβάτα άλογα, που το ένα για το ταίρι του άλλου χρεμετίζει. 9 Δεν πρέπει να τους τιμωρήσω για όλα αυτά; Να μην εκδικηθώ ένα τέτοιο έθνος; 10 Ανεβείτε εχθροί στ’ αμπέλια και καταστρέψτε τα· μα μην τα αφανίσετε εντελώς. Τα κλήματά της ξεριζώστε τα, γιατί σ’ εμένα δεν ανήκουν. 11 Ο λαός του Ισραήλ και ο λαός του Ιούδα απίστησαν πολλές φορές σ’ εμένα. Κι αυτά τα λέω εγώ, ο Κύριος».

12 Αυτοί οι άνθρωποι αρνήθηκαν τον Κύριο και είπαν: «Τι χρησιμεύει να υπολογίζουμε σ’ αυτόν; Δε θα μας βρει κακό κανένα· πείνα δεν θ’ αντιμετωπίσουμε ούτε πόλεμο. 13 Όσα οι προφήτες λένε είναι του αέρα λόγια. Δεν έχουν μέσα τους λόγια Θεού να πουν. Εκείνα που προλέγουν ας πέσουν πάνω τους». 14 Αλλά ο Θεός, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, μου είπε: «Επειδή αυτοί μιλούν έτσι, θα κάνω εγώ τα λόγια μου στο στόμα σου φωτιά, και το λαό αυτό ξύλα θα τον κάνω και θα τους κατακάψει η φωτιά.

15 »Πες τους από μέρους μου: "Ισραηλίτες, θα φέρω εναντίον σας ένα έθνος από μακριά, έθνος αρχαίο και δυνατό, που δε θα ξέρετε τη γλώσσα του και δε θα καταλαβαίνετε τι λένε. 16 Των πολεμιστών του η φαρέτρα το θάνατο σκορπίζει· είναι όλοι τους πανίσχυροι. 17 Αυτοί θα τρώνε τους καρπούς απ’ τη συγκομιδή σας και το δικό σας το ψωμί· τους γιους σας θα σκοτώνουν και τις κόρες σας. Τα πρόβατά σας και τα βόδια σας θα τα καταβροχθίζουν, θα εξαφανίζουν τον καρπό από τ’ αμπέλια σας και απ’ τις συκιές. Θα καταστρέφουν πολεμώντας τις οχυρωμένες πόλεις σας, που σ’ αυτές νιώθατε ασφαλείς"».

18 Μου είπε επίσης ο Κύριος: «Ακόμη και τότε όμως δε θα καταστρέψω εντελώς το λαό μου. 19 Κι όταν ρωτήσουν: "γιατί ο Κύριος ο Θεός μας μάς τα κάνει όλα αυτά;" τότε απάντησέ τους: "όπως στη χώρα σας εκείνον τον εγκαταλείψατε και υπηρετήσατε ξένους θεούς, έτσι θα υπηρετήσετε κι ανθρώπους ξένους, σε χώρα που δε θ’ ανήκει σ’ εσάς"».

20 «Στείλτε μήνυμα στους απογόνους του Ιακώβ, διακηρύξτε στους κατοίκους του βασιλείου του Ιούδα και πείτε τους: 21 Πρόσεξε, λοιπόν, λαέ ανόητε και πεισματάρη. Έχετε μάτια αλλά δε βλέπετε, αυτιά αλλά δεν ακούτε. 22 Γιατί, διαφορετικά θα με υπολογίζατε», λέει ο Κύριος. «Θα τρέματε μπροστά μου. Εγώ έβαλα την άμμο φραγμό στη θάλασσα, αιώνιο σύνορο που να το ξεπεράσει δεν μπορεί· φουσκώνει η θάλασσα μα παραπέρα δεν μπορεί να προχωρήσει. Ταράζονται τα κύματά της, αλλά το σύνορο να το περάσουν δεν μπορούν. 23 Εσείς, όμως, Ισραηλίτες, είστε λαός ισχυρογνώμονας κι επαναστατικός· αποστατήσατε και φύγατε από μένα. 24 Ούτε σκεφτήκατε να με τιμήσετε, εμένα τον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, που στέλνω στον καιρό της τη φθινοπωρινή και την ανοιξιάτικη βροχή, κι εξασφαλίζω κάθε χρόνο τις εβδομάδες του θερισμού. 25 Οι ανομίες και οι αμαρτίες σας σάς στέρησαν όλα αυτά τα καλά».

26 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Βρεθήκαν στο λαό μου ασεβείς, που στήνουνε παγίδα ανθρώπους να συλλάβουνε, όπως εκείνοι που παραμονεύουν να πιάσουνε πουλιά. 27 Όπως είναι γεμάτο το κλουβί πουλιά, έτσι τα σπίτια τους είναι γεμάτα απάτη. Γι’ αυτό έγιναν δυνατοί και πλούτισαν, 28 και χόντρυναν και πάχυναν. Δε βάζουν όρια στις κακές τους πράξεις· δίκαια δεν κρίνουν, αδικούν τα ορφανά και τους φτωχούς, κι έτσι καλοπερνάνε. 29 Δεν πρέπει να τα τιμωρήσω όλα αυτά;» λέει ο Κύριος. «Να μην εκδικηθώ ένα τέτοιο έθνος;»

30 «Τρομερά και φοβερά συμβαίνουνε σ’ αυτή τη χώρα», λέει ο Κύριος. 31 «Οι προφήτες προφητεύουν επικαλούμενοι το ψεύδος*ψεύδος. Η λ. στα εβρ. αναφέρεται στο Βάαλ (βλ. κεφ. 2:8). και οι ιερείς ενεργούν σύμφωνα με τη δική τους διδασκαλία. Και ο λαός μου όλα αυτά τα δέχεται. Μα τι θα κάνετε όταν θα έρθει το τέλος;»

1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. 2 And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely. 3 O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. 4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God. 5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. 6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.*5.6 evenings: or, deserts*5.6 are increased: Heb. are strong

7 How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses. 8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. 9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’s. 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD. 12 They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: 13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them. 14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. 15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say. 16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men. 17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword. 18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.

19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, 21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:*5.21 understanding: Heb. heart 22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? 23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. 24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. 26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.*5.26 they lay…: or, they pry as fowlers lie in wait 27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.*5.27 cage: or, coop 28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. 29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
