1 Το δέκατο μήνα του ένατου έτους της βασιλείας του Σεδεκία στον Ιούδα, ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ ήρθε με όλο το στρατό του στην Ιερουσαλήμ κι άρχισε να την πολιορκεί.*Πρβλ. κεφ. 39:1-10 με κεφ. 52:4-16 και με Β΄ Βασ 25:1-16.2 Την ένατη μέρα του τέταρτου μήνα του ενδέκατου έτους της βασιλείας του Σεδεκία, οι Βαβυλώνιοι έκαναν ρήγμα στο τείχος της πόλης. 3 Μπήκαν τότε όλοι οι αξιωματούχοι του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας και εγκατέστησαν το στρατηγείο τους στη μεσαία πύλη: Ο Νεργάλ-Σαρεσέρ, ο Σαμγάρ-Νεβώ, ο Σαρ-Σεχίμ, επικεφαλής του παλατιού, καθώς και ένας άλλος Νεργάλ-Σαρεσέρ, ανώτατος σύμβουλος του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας.

4 Όταν τους είδε ο βασιλιάς του Ιούδα Σεδεκίας και οι πολεμιστές του, έφυγαν νύχτα και βγήκαν από την πόλη, περνώντας από το δρόμο του κήπου του βασιλιά, μέσα από την πύλη που βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στα δύο τείχη και πήραν το δρόμο προς την πεδιάδα. 5 Ο στρατός όμως των Βαβυλωνίων τους καταδίωξε και τους πρόφτασε στις πεδιάδες της Ιεριχώ. Συνέλαβαν το Σεδεκία και τον έφεραν στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ, στην πόλη Ριβλά, στη χώρα της Χαμάθ·*χώρα της Χαμάθ. Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 23:33. εκεί καταδίκασε ο ίδιος προσωπικά το Σεδεκία. 6 Πρώτα διέταξε να σφάξουν τους γιους του Σεδεκία μπροστά στα μάτια του πατέρα τους, καθώς και όλους τους αξιωματούχους του βασιλείου του Ιούδα. 7 Στη συνέχεια έβγαλε τα μάτια του Σεδεκία, τον έδεσε με δύο χάλκινες αλυσίδες και τον έφερε αιχμάλωτο στην Βαβυλώνα.

8 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι πυρπόλησαν το παλάτι του βασιλιά και τα σπίτια των κατοίκων και γκρέμισαν τα τείχη της Ιερουσαλήμ. 9 Το υπόλοιπο του λαού που είχε απομείνει στην πόλη κι αυτοί που είχαν καταφύγει στο Ναβουχοδονόσορ, οδηγήθηκαν όλοι αιχμάλωτοι στη Βαβυλώνα από το Νεβουζαραδάν, τον αρχηγό της σωματοφυλακής. 10 Αυτός όμως άφησε στη χώρα του Ιούδα τους πιο φτωχούς του λαού, αυτούς που δεν είχαν τίποτα και τους έδωσε αμπέλια και χωράφια.

11 Ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ είχε διατάξει τον αρχηγό της σωματοφυλακής Νεβουζαραδάν σχετικά με τον Ιερεμία τα εξής: 12 «Πήγαινε να βρεις αυτόν τον άνθρωπο και φρόντισε να μην του κάνουν κανένα κακό. Και κοίτα να εκπληρωθεί κάθε του επιθυμία».

13 Ο Νεβουζαραδάν, λοιπόν, αρχηγός της σωματοφυλακής, ο Νεβουσάζ-Βαν, επικεφαλής του παλατιού, ο Νεργάλ-Σαρεσέρ, ανώτατος σύμβουλος και οι άλλοι αξιωματούχοι του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας 14 έστειλαν και πήραν τον Ιερεμία από την αυλή της φρουράς και τον παρέδωσαν στο Γεδαλία, γιο του Αχικάμ κι εγγονό του Σαφάν, για να τον φέρει στο σπίτι του με ασφάλεια. Έτσι ο Ιερεμίας έμεινε εκεί, ανάμεσα στο λαό.

15 Ενώ ο Ιερεμίας ήταν ακόμα κλεισμένος στην αυλή της φρουράς, του είπε ο Κύριος: 16 «Πήγαινε και πες στον Εβέδ-Μέλεχ, τον Αιθίοπα: "ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: Εγώ, όπως έχω πει, θα καταστρέψω αυτή την πόλη και δε θα επιτρέψω να ευτυχήσει. Και όταν αυτό συμβεί, θα είσαι εκεί και θα το δεις. 17 Εσένα όμως εγώ θα σε γλιτώσω εκείνη την ημέρα και δε θα παραδοθείς στα χέρια των ανθρώπων που φοβάσαι. 18 Θα σε σώσω το δίχως άλλο! Δε θα σκοτωθείς στον πόλεμο· θα επιζήσεις, γιατί έχεις εμπιστοσύνη σ’ εμένα, τον Κύριο"».

1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem, and they besieged it. 2 And in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city was broken up. 3 And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, and sat in the middle gate, even Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim, Rab-saris, Nergal-sharezer, Rab-mag, with all the residue of the princes of the king of Babylon.

4 And it came to pass, that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king’s garden, by the gate betwixt the two walls: and he went out the way of the plain. 5 But the Chaldeans’ army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him.*39.5 gave…: Heb. spake with him judgments 6 Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. 7 Moreover he put out Zedekiah’s eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon.*39.7 with…: Heb. with two brasen chains, or, fetters

15 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying, 16 Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee. 17 But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the LORD: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. 18 For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD.
