1 Κύριε, εσύ είσαι δίκαιος. Πώς μπορώ να διαμαρτυρηθώ εναντίον σου; Όμως θέλω να σε ρωτήσω κάτι σχετικά με τη δικαιοσύνη: Γιατί ευτυχούν οι ασεβείς; Γιατί είναι ασφαλείς όλοι οι άπιστοι; 2 Τους φύτεψες και ρίζωσαν, αυξήθηκαν και καρποφόρησαν. Το όνομά σου είναι πάντοτε στα χείλη τους, αλλά η καρδιά τους είναι μακριά από σένα. 3 Εσύ, Κύριε, με γνωρίζεις και βλέπεις τα όσα κάνω· με δοκίμασες αν είμαι δικός σου. Σύρε τους σαν τα πρόβατα για τη σφαγή κι ετοίμασέ τους για τη μέρα της σφαγής τους.

4 Ως πότε θα παραμένει άνυδρη η χώρα και θα ξεραίνεται το χορτάρι στα χωράφια; Για την κακία των κατοίκων της καταστράφηκαν τα ζώα και τα πουλιά στη χώρα, γιατί αυτοί οι άνθρωποι σκέφτηκαν ότι ο Θεός δεν μπορεί να δει το μέλλον τους.

5 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Αν κουράζεσαι όταν παραβγαίνεις με τους πεζούς, πως θα μπορέσεις να παραβγείς με τ’ άλογα; Αν μόνο στην πεδιάδα νιώθεις βολικά, τι θα κάνεις στη λόχμη του Ιορδάνη;

6 »Ακόμη και τ’ αδέρφια σου κι οι συγγενείς σου σε εγκατέλειψαν, και εναντίον σου συνωμοτούν. Μην τους πιστέψεις, ακόμη κι αν με καλοσύνη σου μιλούν».

7 Ο Κύριος είπε: «Εγκατέλειψα τον Ισραήλ· απέρριψα τον ίδιο μου το λαό· παρέδωσα την αγαπημένη μου πόλη στην εξουσία των εχθρών της. 8 Ο λαός μου βρυχήθηκε εναντίον μου σαν το λιοντάρι μες στο δάσος· γι’ αυτό μού έγινε αντιπαθής.

9 »Έγινε ο λαός μου σαν ένα ποικιλόχρωμο πουλί, που το κυκλώνουνε τ’ αρπαχτικά τα όρνια. Εμπρός! Φωνάξτε νά ’ρθουν όλα τα άγρια θηρία· για το συμπόσιο να συγκεντρωθούνε. 10 Πολλοί ξένοι βοσκοί κατέστρεψαν το αμπέλι μου, ποδοπατήσαν τα χωράφια μου, μετέτρεψαν σε απαίσια έρημο τους θαυμαστούς αγρούς μου. 11 Η χώρα απλώνεται μπροστά μου ερημωμένη και αξιολύπητη. Όλη η χώρα ερημώθηκε, γιατί κανείς δε νοιάστηκε για τις προειδοποιήσεις μου.

12 »Πάνω σε κάθε λόφο της ερήμου φάνηκαν λεηλατητές, γιατί το ξίφος του Κυρίου θερίζει από τη μια άκρη της χώρας ως την άλλη· κανείς δεν πρόκειται να γλιτώσει. 13 Σιτάρι έσπειραν μα θέρισαν αγκάθια· κουράστηκαν μα τίποτα δεν απόλαυσαν. Η σοδειά τους τούς απογοήτευσε. Ο θυμός ο φοβερός του Κυρίου όλα τα αφάνισε».*Οι στ 12:7-13 φαίνεται ότι αναφέρονται στα γεγονότα του Β΄ Βασ 24:2-4.

14 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Όλους τους κακούς γείτονες του λαού μου, του Ισραήλ, που απλώνουν χέρι στη χώρα που του έχω δώσει, θα τους ξεριζώσω από τη γη τους· αλλά θα ξεριζώσω απ’ ανάμεσά τους και όσους ανήκουν στον Ιούδα. 15 Κι αφού τους ξεριζώσω, πάλι θα τους ελεήσω όλους και θα τους ξαναφέρω καθέναν στη δική του χώρα και στη δική του ιδιοκτησία. 16 Αυτοί δίδαξαν το λαό μου να ορκίζεται στο Βάαλ· αλλά αν μάθουνε καλά την πίστη του λαού μου, και μάλιστα να υπόσχονται με όρκο στο όνομά μου "μα τον αληθινό Θεό", τότε θα επιτρέψω να κατοικούν ανάμεσα στο λαό μου. 17 Αν όμως κάποιο έθνος δεν υπακούσει, θα το ξεριζώσω εντελώς και θα το καταστρέψω. Εγώ το λέω ο Κύριος».

14 Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit; Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Judah from among them. 15 And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land. 16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people. 17 But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.
