1 Όταν ο Άβραμ ήταν ενενήντα εννέα ετών, του φανερώθηκε ο Κύριος και του είπε: «Εγώ είμαι ο Ελ-Σαδδάι (Θεός παντοκράτορας). Να ζεις σύμφωνα με το θέλημά μου και να είσαι τέλειος. 2 Θα συνάψω μαζί σου διαθήκη, και θα σου δώσω πολλούς απογόνους».

3 Ο Άβραμ έπεσε με το πρόσωπό του στη γη και ο Θεός τού είπε: 4 «Αυτή είναι η διαθήκη που κάνω μαζί σου: Θα γίνεις πατέρας ενός πλήθους εθνών. 5 Δε θα ονομάζεσαι πια Άβραμ αλλά Αβραάμ,*Αβραάμ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η φρ. «πατέρας πολλών εθνών». γιατί θα σε κάνω πατέρα πλήθους εθνών. 6 Θα κάνω ν’ αποκτήσεις πολλούς απογόνους και να γίνεις γενάρχης λαών· και βασιλιάδες θα προέλθουν από σένα. 7 Τη διαθήκη μου τη συνάπτω μαζί σου αλλά θα ισχύει και για όλες τις γενιές των απογόνων –διαθήκη αιώνια, ώστε να είμαι Θεός δικός σου και των απογόνων σου. 8 Σ’ εσένα και τους απογόνους σου θα δώσω τη χώρα όπου τώρα κατοικείς σαν ξένος, όλη τη χώρα της Χαναάν, για αιώνια ιδιοκτησία και θα είμαι Θεός τους».

9 Είπε ακόμα ο Θεός στον Αβραάμ: «Θα πρέπει, όμως, να τηρείς τη διαθήκη μου τόσο εσύ όσο και οι επόμενες γενιές των απογόνων σου. 10 Αυτή είναι η διαθήκη μου που θα τηρείτε: Κάθε αρσενικό παιδί σας θα περιτέμνεται. 11 Θα κάνετε την περιτομή, κι αυτή θ’ αποτελεί σημείο της διαθήκης ανάμεσα σ’ εμένα και σ’ εσάς. 12 Κάθε παιδί θα περιτέμνεται την όγδοη ημέρα από τη γέννησή του. Αυτό ισχύει για κάθε αρσενικό παιδί σε όλες τις γενιές σας, καθώς και για κάθε δούλο, είτε είναι γεννημένος στο σπίτι είτε αγορασμένος από ξένους και δεν περιλαμβάνεται στους απογόνους σας. 13 Θα πρέπει οπωσδήποτε καθένας που γεννήθηκε στο σπίτι σου ή αγοράστηκε με χρήματα, να περιτέμνεται. Έτσι η διαθήκη μου θα μαρτυρείται στο σώμα σας, διαθήκη αιώνια. 14 Ο απερίτμητος, δηλαδή αυτός που δε θα έχει κάνει περιτομή, θα αποκόπτεται από το λαό του, γιατί θα έχει παραβεί τη διαθήκη μου».

15 Έπειτα ο Θεός είπε στον Αβραάμ: «Η Σάρα η γυναίκα σου δεν θα ονομάζεται πια Σάρα, αλλά Σάρρα.*Σάρα...Σάρρα. Δύο τύποι ενός και του αυτού ονόματος, που σημαίνει «πριγκίπισσα».16 Θα την ευλογήσω και θα σου δώσω γιο απ’ αυτήν. Θα την ευλογήσω και θα προέλθουν απ’ αυτήν λαοί και βασιλιάδες λαών».

17 Τότε ο Αβραάμ έσκυψε το πρόσωπο και γέλασε, γιατί σκέφτηκε: «Είναι δυνατόν ένας άντρας εκατό χρονών ν’ αποκτήσει γιο, και η Σάρρα, ενενήντα χρονών, να γεννήσει;» 18 Και είπε στο Θεό: «Μακάρι ν’ αφήσεις να ζήσει ο Ισμαήλ!»

19 Αλλά ο Θεός απάντησε: «Και όμως, η Σάρρα η γυναίκα σου θα σου γεννήσει γιο και θα τον ονομάσεις Ισαάκ.*Το όνομα «Ισαάκ» στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως το ρ. που στο στ. 17 μεταφράζεται «γέλασε» (πρβλ. κεφ. 18:12-15). Μ’ αυτόν θα συνάψω τη διαθήκη μου και με τους απογόνους του, διαθήκη αιώνια. 20 Σχετικά με τον Ισμαήλ σε άκουσα. Θα τον ευλογήσω, και θα του δώσω αμέτρητα παιδιά και απογόνους. Δώδεκα ηγεμόνες θα προέλθουν απ’ αυτόν· θα τον κάνω μεγάλο έθνος. 21 Τη διαθήκη μου όμως θα τη συνάψω με τον Ισαάκ, που θα σου γεννήσει η Σάρρα, του χρόνου τέτοιον καιρό». 22 Όταν ο Θεός τελείωσε τη συνομιλία με τον Αβραάμ έφυγε απ’ αυτόν.

23 Την ίδια εκείνη μέρα, ο Αβραάμ έκανε περιτομή στο γιο του τον Ισμαήλ και σε κάθε αρσενικό από το προσωπικό του, δηλαδή στους δούλους που είχαν γεννηθεί στο σπίτι του και σ’ εκείνους που τους είχε αποκτήσει με χρήματα, όπως του είπε ο Θεός. 24 Ο Αβραάμ ήταν ενενήντα εννέα ετών όταν έκανε περιτομή στον εαυτό του, 25 κι ο γιος του ο Ισμαήλ δεκατριών. 26 Την ίδια εκείνη μέρα, λοιπόν, περιτμήθηκαν ο Αβραάμ και ο γιος του ο Ισμαήλ, 27 μαζί και όλοι οι υπηρέτες του σπιτιού του.

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.*17.1 perfect: or, upright, or, sincere 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.*17.4 many…: Heb. multitude of nations 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.*17.5 Abraham: that is, Father of a great multitude 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.*17.8 wherein…: Heb. of thy sojournings

9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.*17.12 he that is eight…: Heb. a son of eight days 13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.*17.15 Sarah: that is Princess 16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.*17.16 she…: Heb. she shall become nations 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! 19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. 22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. 24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.
