1 Μια μέρα ο Ιακώβ άκουσε τα παιδιά του Λάβαν να λένε: «Ο Ιακώβ τα πήρε όλα όσα είχε ο πατέρας μας· από την περιουσία του πατέρα μας έκανε όλον αυτό τον πλούτο». 2 Πρόσεξε επίσης ο Ιακώβ ότι ο Λάβαν δεν του φερνόταν πια όπως πρώτα. 3 Τότε, είπε ο Κύριος στον Ιακώβ: «Γύρνα στη χώρα των προγόνων σου, εκεί όπου γεννήθηκες, κι εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σου».

4 Ο Ιακώβ έστειλε και κάλεσε τη Ραχήλ και τη Λεία στους αγρούς, εκεί που έβοσκε τα κοπάδια του, 5 και τους είπε: «Βλέπω ότι ο πατέρας σας δε μου φέρνεται πια όπως πρώτα. Ο Θεός όμως του πατέρα μου ήταν πάντα μαζί μου. 6 Εσείς οι ίδιες ξέρετε ότι δούλεψα στον πατέρα σας με όλη μου τη δύναμη. 7 Αλλά εκείνος με εξαπάτησε και μου άλλαξε δέκα φορές το μισθό μου. Κι όμως, ο Θεός δεν τον άφησε να μου κάνει κακό. 8 Όταν έλεγε "όσα έχουν στίγματα θα είναι η αμοιβή σου", τότε όλα τα κοπάδια γεννούσαν με στίγματα. Όταν έλεγε "τα ραβδωτά θα είναι η αμοιβή σου", όλα τα κοπάδια γεννούσαν ραβδωτά. 9 Έτσι πήρε ο Θεός τα πρόβατα από τον πατέρα σας και τα έδωσε σ’ εμένα. 10 Την εποχή που ζευγάρωναν τα κοπάδια, είδα στον ύπνο μου ότι τα κριάρια που ανέβαιναν στις προβατίνες ήταν ραβδωτά, διάστικτα και παρδαλά. 11 Ο άγγελος του Θεού μού είπε μέσα στο όνειρο: "Ιακώβ" κι απάντησα: "Ορίστε". 12 "Κοίτα ένα γύρω", μου είπε, "και δες: Όλα τα κριάρια που ανεβαίνουν στις προβατίνες είναι ραβδωτά, διάστικτα και παρδαλά· είδα, πράγματι, αυτά που σου έκανε ο Λάβαν. 13 Εγώ είμαι ο Θεός της Βαιθήλ, που του αφιέρωσες εκεί μια ιερή στήλη και του έκανες τάξιμο. Τώρα, λοιπόν σήκω και φύγε από τη χώρα αυτή και γύρνα στην πατρίδα σου"».

14 Η Ραχήλ και η Λεία αποκρίθηκαν: «Μήπως έχουμε εμείς πια μερίδιο στην κληρονομιά από το σπίτι του πατέρα μας; 15 Εμάς μας θεωρεί ξένες· μας πούλησε κι ύστερα έφαγε τα χρήματά μας. 16 Όλη η περιουσία που ο Θεός αφαίρεσε απ’ τον πατέρα μας ανήκει σ’ εμάς και στα παιδιά μας. Τώρα λοιπόν κάνε ό,τι σου είπε ο Θεός». 17 Τότε ο Ιακώβ ανέβασε τους γιους του και τις γυναίκες του στις καμήλες, 18 πήρε κι όλα τα κοπάδια του και όλα τα υπάρχοντά του που τα είχε αποκτήσει στη Μεσοποταμία και ξεκίνησε να πάει στον Ισαάκ, τον πατέρα του, στη Χαναάν. 19 Ο Λάβαν είχε πάει να κουρέψει τα πρόβατά του και η Ραχήλ επωφελήθηκε κι έκλεψε τα ειδώλια του πατέρα της. 20 Ο Ιακώβ εξαπάτησε το Λάβαν τον Αραμαίο, γιατί έφυγε χωρίς να του το αναγγείλει. 21 Έφυγε βιαστικά μαζί με όλα όσα του ανήκαν. Πέρασε τον ποταμό Ευφράτη και κατευθύνθηκε προς τα βουνά της Γαλαάδ.

22 Μετά από τρεις μέρες ανάγγειλαν στο Λάβαν τον Αραμαίο ότι ο Ιακώβ είχε φύγει. 23 Τότε αυτός πήρε μαζί του τους συγγενείς του και καταδίωξε τον Ιακώβ εφτά μέρες δρόμο, και τον πρόφτασε στα βουνά της Γαλαάδ. 24 Ο Θεός όμως την ίδια εκείνη νύχτα του παρουσιάστηκε στ’ όνειρό του και του είπε: «Πρόσεξε, να μην πεις στον Ιακώβ ούτε καλό ούτε κακό». 25 Πρόφτασε λοιπόν ο Λάβαν τον Ιακώβ, όταν εκείνος είχε κατασκηνώσει στα βουνά. Ο Λάβαν με τους συγγενείς του κατασκήνωσε κι αυτός στα βουνά της Γαλαάδ.

26 Ο Λάβαν άρχισε να ρωτάει τον Ιακώβ: «Γιατί με ξεγέλασες και πήρες μαζί σου τις θυγατέρες μου, σαν να ήταν αιχμάλωτες πολέμου; 27 Γιατί έφυγες κρυφά και με εξαπάτησες; Γιατί δεν με ειδοποίησες να σε ξεπροβοδίσω με γιορτές και με τραγούδια, με τύμπανα και με κιθάρες; 28 Γιατί δε μ’ άφησες να φιλήσω τα εγγόνια μου και τις κόρες μου; Φέρθηκες ανόητα! 29 Θα μπορούσα να σου κάνω κακό. Αλλά ο Θεός του πατέρα σου μου είπε χτες τη νύχτα: "Πρόσεξε να μην πεις στον Ιακώβ ούτε καλό ούτε κακό". 30 Τώρα λοιπόν έφυγες γιατί νοστάλγησες πολύ το σπίτι του πατέρα σου. Γιατί όμως έκλεψες τους θεούς μου;»

31 Ο Ιακώβ αποκρίθηκε στο Λάβαν: «Φοβήθηκα, και σκέφτηκα ότι θα μου έπαιρνες τις θυγατέρες σου. 32 Αλλά εκείνος στον οποίο θα βρεις τους θεούς σου δε θα ζήσει. Ψάξε εδώ μπροστά στους συγγενείς μας και ό,τι είναι δικό σου και το έχω εγώ, πάρ’ το». Αλλά ο Ιακώβ δεν ήξερε ότι η Ραχήλ ήταν που είχε κλέψει τους θεούς.

33 Ο Λάβαν πήγε στη σκηνή του Ιακώβ, στη σκηνή της Λείας και στη σκηνή των δύο δούλων γυναικών, αλλά δε βρήκε τίποτε. Όταν βγήκε από τη σκηνή της Λείας μπήκε στη σκηνή της Ραχήλ. 34 Η Ραχήλ είχε πάρει τα ειδώλια, τα είχε βάλει κάτω από το σαμάρι της καμήλας και είχε καθίσει από πάνω. Ο Λάβαν έψαξε όλη τη σκηνή αλλά δε βρήκε τίποτα. 35 Η Ραχήλ είπε στον πατέρα της: «Μη θυμώσεις, κύριέ μου, που δεν μπορώ να σηκωθώ μπροστά σου, αλλά έχω την περίοδό μου». Ο Λάβαν έψαξε αλλά δε βρήκε τα είδωλα.

36 Θύμωσε λοιπόν ο Ιακώβ κι άρχισε να φιλονικεί με το Λάβαν: «Ποια είναι η ανομία μου», του λέει, «και ποια η αμαρτία μου που με καταδιώκεις; 37 Έψαξες όλα μου τα υπάρχοντα. Βρήκες τίποτε που ν’ ανήκει στο σπίτι σου; Βάλ’ τα μπροστά στους δικούς μου συγγενείς και στους δικούς σου για να κρίνουν ανάμεσά μας. 38 Είκοσι χρόνια τώρα είμαι μαζί σου. Οι προβατίνες σου και οι κατσίκες σου ποτέ δεν απέβαλαν, κι ένα κριάρι απ’ τα κοπάδια σου ποτέ δεν έφαγα. 39 Ποτέ δε σου έφερα ένα κατασπαραγμένο ζωντανό· εγώ σου το αντικαθιστούσα από τα δικά μου. Από μένα ζητούσες αυτό που μου έκλεβαν, είτε τη μέρα είτε τη νύχτα. 40 Την ημέρα μ’ έτρωγε η ζέστη και τη νύχτα το κρύο. Είχα χάσει τον ύπνο μου. 41 Είκοσι χρόνια τώρα είμαι στο σπίτι σου. Δεκατέσσερα χρόνια σού δούλεψα για τις δύο κόρες σου και έξι για τα κοπάδια σου, κι άλλαξες δέκα φορές την αμοιβή μου. 42 Αν ο Θεός του προπάτορά μου του Αβραάμ, ο Θεός που τον τρέμει ο Ισαάκ, δεν ήταν μαζί μου, ασφαλώς τώρα θα με ξαπόστελνες με χέρια αδειανά. Αλλά ο Θεός είδε την ταλαιπωρία και τους κόπους μου, κι έβγαλε κρίση χτες τη νύχτα».

43 Ο Λάβαν αποκρίθηκε στον Ιακώβ: «Οι κόρες αυτές είναι κόρες μου, κι αυτά τα παιδιά παιδιά μου· τα κοπάδια σου είναι κοπάδια μου και καθετί που βλέπεις ανήκει σ’ εμένα. Κι όμως δεν μπορώ να κάνω τίποτα για τις θυγατέρες μου και για τα παιδιά, που έφεραν στον κόσμο! 44 Έλα τώρα λοιπόν να κάνουμε μια συμφωνία εγώ κι εσύ, κι ας βάλουμε κάτι για μνημείο ανάμεσά μας». 45 Πήρε τότε ο Ιακώβ ένα λιθάρι και το έστησε για αναμνηστική στήλη. 46 «Μαζέψτε πέτρες», είπε στους συγγενείς του. Εκείνοι μάζεψαν πέτρες και έκαναν ένα σωρό, και έφαγαν εκεί, απάνω στο σωρό. 47 Ο Λάβαν ονόμασε το σωρό εκείνο Ιεγάρ-Σαχαδουθά,*Ιεγάρ-Σαχαδουθά. Στα αραμαϊκά σημαίνει «σωρός μαρτυρίας». κι ο Ιακώβ τον ονόμασε Γαλεέδ.*Γαλεέδ. Στα εβρ. σημαίνει «βουνό μαρτυρίας».

48 Ο Λάβαν είπε: «Ο σωρός αυτός οι πέτρες ας είναι σήμερα μάρτυρας ανάμεσά μας». Γι’ αυτό η τοποθεσία ονομάστηκε Γαλεέδ. 49 Ο Λάβαν επίσης είπε: «Ο Κύριος ας επιβλέπει ανάμεσά μας όταν χωρίσουμε ο ένας από τον άλλο». Έτσι ονόμασαν την τοποθεσία και Μισπά.*Μισπά. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «παρατηρητήριο».50 «Αν κακομεταχειριστείς τις κόρες μου ή αν πάρεις κι άλλες γυναίκες εκτός από τις κόρες μου, ακόμη κι αν κανένας μάρτυρας δεν θα βρίσκεται μπροστά, σκέψου ότι ο Θεός θα είναι μάρτυρας ανάμεσά μας».

51 Ο Λάβαν είπε στον Ιακώβ: «Να ο σωρός αυτός, και η στήλη, που έστησα ανάμεσά μας. 52 Μάρτυρας θα είναι και ο σωρός και η στήλη, ότι εγώ δε θα τα διαβώ προς εσένα ούτε εσύ θα τα διαβείς προς εμένα με κακό σκοπό. 53 Ο Θεός του Αβραάμ και ο Θεός του Ναχώρ*Ο Θεός... Ναχώρ,σύμφωνα με δύο χειρ. και τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. προσθέτει εν συνεχεία τη φρ. «ο Θεός των πατέρων τους». ας κρίνει μεταξύ μας».

Και έδωσε όρκο ο Ιακώβ στο Θεό που τον έτρεμε ο πατέρας του ο Ισαάκ. 54 Μετά πρόσφερε θυσία πάνω στο βουνό, και κάλεσε τους συγγενείς του να φάνε όλοι μαζί. Έφαγαν και πέρασαν τη νύχτα στο βουνό.

1 And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s hath he gotten all this glory. 2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.*31.2 as before: Heb. as yesterday and the day before 3 And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee. 4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock, 5 And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me. 6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father. 7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me. 8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked. 9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me. 10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.*31.10 rams: or, he goats 11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee. 13 I am the God of Beth-el, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. 14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house? 15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money. 16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children’s: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.

17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels; 18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padan-aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. 19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father’s.*31.19 images: Heb. teraphim 20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.*31.20 unawares…: Heb. the heart of Laban 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead. 22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled. 23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days’ journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead. 24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.*31.24 either…: Heb. from good to bad

25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead. 26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword? 27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?*31.27 steal…: Heb. hast stolen me 28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing. 29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. 30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father’s house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods? 31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me. 32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them. 33 And Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the two maidservants’ tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah’s tent, and entered into Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel’s furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.*31.34 searched: Heb. felt 35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.

36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? 37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.*31.37 searched: Heb. felt 38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten. 39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. 40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes. 41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times. 42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.

43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born? 44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee. 45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar. 46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap. 47 And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.*31.47 Jegar-sahadutha: that is, The heap of witness, Chaldee*31.47 Galeed: that is, The heap of witness, Heb. 48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed; 49 And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.*31.49 Mizpah: that is, A beacon, or, watchtower 50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee. 51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee; 52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm. 53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac. 54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.*31.54 offered…: or, killed beasts 55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
