1 Ύστερα από τα γεγονότα αυτά, ο οινοχόος του βασιλιά της Αιγύπτου και ο αρχιαρτοποιός, έκαναν κάτι που πρόσβαλε τον κύριό τους το βασιλιά. 2 Ο Φαραώ οργίστηκε εναντίον των δύο αυτών αυλικών του, 3 και τους έβαλε σε περιορισμό στο σπίτι του αρχηγού των σωματοφυλάκων, στη φυλακή, στο μέρος όπου ήταν φυλακισμένος και ο Ιωσήφ. 4 Έμειναν σε περιορισμό αρκετόν καιρό και ο αρχηγός των σωματοφυλάκων τοποθέτησε κοντά τους τον Ιωσήφ για να τους υπηρετεί.

5 Μια νύχτα, τόσο ο οινοχόος όσο και ο αρχιαρτοποιός είδαν εκεί στη φυλακή από ένα όνειρο, με τη δική του ξεχωριστή σημασία το καθένα. 6 Το πρωί, όταν ο Ιωσήφ ήρθε να τους δει, πρόσεξε ότι ήταν ταραγμένοι. 7 Τους ρώτησε λοιπόν, «Γιατί σήμερα τα πρόσωπά σας είναι σκυθρωπά;» 8 «Είδαμε ένα όνειρο», του αποκρίθηκαν, «και δεν υπάρχει κανείς να το εξηγήσει». Τότε ο Ιωσήφ τους είπε: «Στο Θεό δεν ανήκει κάθε εξήγηση; Διηγηθείτε το λοιπόν σ’ εμένα».

9 Ο οινοχόος τού είπε: «Στο όνειρό μου είδα μπροστά μου ένα κλήμα, 10 με τρεις κληματόβεργες. Το κλήμα βλάστησε, άνθισε, και τα τσαμπιά του έγιναν ώριμα σταφύλια. 11 Στα χέρια μου κρατούσα το ποτήρι του Φαραώ. Πήρα τα σταφύλια, τα έστιψα στο ποτήρι του και του το έδωσα στα χέρια».

12 Ο Ιωσήφ τού είπε: «Να ποια είναι η εξήγηση του ονείρου: Οι τρεις κληματόβεργες είναι τρεις μέρες. 13 Τρεις μέρες ακόμη κι ο Φαραώ θα σε εξυψώσει και θα σε αποκαταστήσει στη θέση σου. Τότε θα του δίνεις το ποτήρι στο χέρι του, όπως έκανες και πρωτύτερα, που ήσουν ο οινοχόος του. 14 Αλλά θυμήσου κι εμένα, όταν όλα θα έχουν πάει για σένα καλά, και δείξε μου καλοσύνη. Μίλησε για μένα στο Φαραώ και βγάλε με απ’ αυτό εδώ το μέρος. 15 Με άρπαξαν απ’ τη χώρα των Εβραίων κι εδώ δεν έκανα τίποτε για να με ρίξουν στη φυλακή». 16 Ο αρχιαρτοποιός είδε ότι η εξήγηση που έδωσε ο Ιωσήφ ήταν ευνοϊκή, και του είπε: «Κι εγώ είδα στο όνειρό μου ότι είχα τρία καλάθια με αρτοσκευάσματα πάνω στο κεφάλι μου. 17 Στο πάνω καλάθι ήταν διάφορα γλυκίσματα για το Φαραώ, απ’ αυτά που ψήνονται στο φούρνο, αλλά τα πουλιά τα έτρωγαν απ’ το καλάθι που ήταν πάνω στο κεφάλι μου». 18 Ο Ιωσήφ τού αποκρίθηκε: «Να ποια είναι η εξήγηση: Τα τρία καλάθια είναι τρεις μέρες. 19 Τρεις μέρες ακόμα και ο Φαραώ θα σου πάρει το κεφάλι, θα σε κρεμάσει σ’ ένα ξύλο και τα πουλιά θα τρώνε τις σάρκες σου».

20 Την τρίτη μέρα, που ήταν τα γενέθλια του Φαραώ, αυτός παρέθεσε δείπνο σ’ όλους τους αυλικούς του. Θυμήθηκε τότε τον οινοχόο και τον αρχιαρτοποιό ανάμεσα στους αυλικούς του. 21 Τον οινοχόο τον αποκατέστησε στο αξίωμά του, κι εκείνος έδωσε πάλι το ποτήρι στο χέρι του Φαραώ. 22 Τον αρχιαρτοποιό όμως τον κρέμασε, όπως ακριβώς τους είχε εξηγήσει ο Ιωσήφ. 23 Αλλά ο οινοχόος δε θυμήθηκε τον Ιωσήφ· τον είχε ξεχάσει.

1 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. 3 And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. 4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.

5 And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison. 6 And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad. 7 And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?*40.7 look…: Heb. are your faces evil? 8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you. 9 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; 10 And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes: 11 And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand. 12 And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days: 13 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.*40.13 lift…: or, reckon 14 But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:*40.14 think…: Heb. remember me with thee 15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon. 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head:*40.16 white: or, full of holes 17 And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.*40.17 bakemeats…: Heb. meat of Pharaoh, the work of a baker, or, cook 18 And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days: 19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.*40.19 lift…: or, reckon thee, and take thy office from thee

20 And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.*40.20 lifted…: or, reckoned 21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand: 22 But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.
