1 Στη χώρα έπεσε πείνα, εκτός από την πρώτη πείνα που είχε πέσει τον καιρό του Αβραάμ, κι ο Ισαάκ πήγε στον Αβιμέλεχ, το βασιλιά των Φιλισταίων, στα Γέραρα. 2 Ο Κύριος είχε παρουσιαστεί στον Ισαάκ και του είχε πει: «Μην κατεβείς στην Αίγυπτο· μείνε στη χώρα που εγώ σου λέω. 3 Μείνε σαν ξένος σ’ αυτήν εδώ τη χώρα, κι εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σου και θα σε ευλογήσω· γιατί σ’ εσένα και στους απογόνους σου θα δώσω όλα αυτά τα εδάφη και θα κρατήσω τον όρκο που έδωσα στον πατέρα σου τον Αβραάμ. 4 Θα σου δώσω αναρίθμητους απογόνους σαν τ’ αστέρια του ουρανού· σ’ εκείνους θα δώσω όλες αυτές τις περιοχές και μέσω αυτών θα ευλογηθούν όλα τα έθνη της γης· 5 γιατί ο Αβραάμ με υπάκουσε και τήρησε όλες τις προσταγές μου και τις εντολές μου, τους όρους μου και τους νόμους μου».

6 Έτσι, ο Ισαάκ εγκαταστάθηκε στα Γέραρα. 7 Όταν οι άνθρωποι του τόπου τον ρωτούσαν για τη γυναίκα του, εκείνος έλεγε ότι ήταν αδερφή του, γιατί φοβόταν μήπως, αν έλεγε πως ήταν γυναίκα του, τον σκότωναν εξαιτίας της Ρεβέκκας, επειδή ήταν όμορφη.

8 Είχε μείνει εκεί πολύν καιρό. Κάποτε ο βασιλιάς των Φιλισταίων Αβιμέλεχ, κοιτάζοντας απ’ το παράθυρο είδε τον Ισαάκ να ερωτοτροπεί με τη Ρεβέκκα, τη γυναίκα του. 9 Τον κάλεσε και του είπε: «Ώστε αυτή είναι γυναίκα σου! Γιατί είπες πως είναι αδερφή σου;» Ο Ισαάκ του απάντησε: «Σκέφτηκα ότι αλλιώς θα κινδύνευα να πεθάνω εξαιτίας της». 10 «Τι ήταν αυτό που μας έκανες!» του είπε ο Αβιμέλεχ. «Εύκολα θα μπορούσε ένας από το λαό να κοιμηθεί με τη γυναίκα σου, και τότε θα γινόσουν αιτία να αμαρτήσουμε». 11 Τότε ο Αβιμέλεχ έδωσε σ’ όλο το λαό αυτή τη διαταγή: «Όποιος πειράξει τον άνθρωπο αυτό και τη γυναίκα του, εξάπαντος θα θανατωθεί».

12 Ο Ισαάκ έσπειρε σ’ αυτήν τη χώρα και θέρισε τη χρονιά εκείνη το εκατονταπλάσιο –ο Κύριος τον είχε ευλογήσει. 13 Τα αγαθά του όλο και πλήθαιναν, ωσότου έγινε πάμπλουτος. 14 Απέκτησε πρόβατα, βόδια και πολλούς δούλους, και γι’ αυτό οι Φιλισταίοι τον φθόνησαν. 15 Όλα τα πηγάδια που είχαν ανοίξει οι δούλοι του πατέρα του τον καιρό του Αβραάμ, οι Φιλισταίοι τα έφραξαν και τα γέμισαν με χώμα.

16 Ο Αβιμέλεχ είπε τότε στον Ισαάκ: «Φύγε από κοντά μας, γιατί έγινες πολύ δυνατότερος από μας». 17 Έτσι ο Ισαάκ έφυγε από ’κει και κατασκήνωσε κοντά στην Κοιλάδα των Γεράρων και εγκαταστάθηκε εκεί. 18 Απέφραξε τα πηγάδια, που είχαν ανοιχθεί τον καιρό του πατέρα του τού Αβραάμ, και οι Φιλισταίοι τα είχαν κλείσει μετά το θάνατό του· και τους έδωσε τα ίδια ονόματα που τους είχε δώσει κι ο πατέρας του.

19 Μια μέρα οι δούλοι του Ισαάκ έσκαψαν στο φαράγγι και ανακάλυψαν μια πηγή με δροσερό νερό. 20 Οι βοσκοί των Γεράρων άρχισαν τότε να φιλονικούν με τους βοσκούς του Ισαάκ κι έλεγαν: «Σ’ εμάς ανήκει το νερό». Γι’ αυτό ο Ισαάκ ονόμασε το πηγάδι Εσέκ (Φιλονικία), γιατί φιλονίκησαν μαζί του. 21 Άνοιξαν κι άλλο πηγάδι και φιλονίκησαν και για κείνο· κι ο Ισαάκ το ονόμασε Σιτνά (Εχθρότητα). 22 Μετά έφυγε από ’κει και άνοιξε άλλο ένα πηγάδι, που γι’ αυτό όμως δεν φιλονίκησαν πια. Έτσι το ονόμασε Ρεχωβώθ, (Άνεση - Ευρυχωρία). «Επιτέλους», είπε, «ο Κύριος μας έδωσε άνεση κι έτσι θα προκόψουμε σ’ αυτό τον τόπο».

23 Από ’κει ανηφόρισε προς τη Βέερ-Σεβά. 24 Ο Κύριος του παρουσιάστηκε εκείνη τη νύχτα και του είπε: «Εγώ είμαι ο Θεός του Αβραάμ, του πατέρα σου. Μη φοβάσαι! Εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σου· θα σε ευλογήσω και θα σου δώσω πάρα πολλούς απογόνους, για χάρη του Αβραάμ του δούλου μου».

25 Εκεί ο Ισαάκ έχτισε θυσιαστήριο και προσευχήθηκε στον Κύριο. Εκεί κατασκήνωσε, και οι δούλοι του άνοιξαν ένα πηγάδι.

26 Ο Αβιμέλεχ ήρθε από τα Γέραρα να βρει τον Ισαάκ. Μαζί του ήταν ο Αχουζάθ ο έμπιστός του, κι ο Φιχόλ, ο αρχηγός του στρατού του. 27 Ο Ισαάκ τους είπε: «Γιατί ήρθατε σ’ εμένα, αφού με μισείτε και με διώξατε από κοντά σας;»

28 Εκείνοι απάντησαν: «Είδαμε καθαρά ότι ο Κύριος είναι μαζί σου, και γι’ αυτό είπαμε να κάνουμε μια ένορκη συμφωνία. Να συνάψουμε δηλαδή συνθήκη μαζί σου, 29 ότι δε θα μας κάνεις κανένα κακό, όπως κι εμείς δε σε πειράξαμε και δε σου κάναμε παρά μόνο καλό, και σε αφήσαμε να φύγεις ειρηνικά. Εσύ τώρα είσαι ο ευλογημένος του Κυρίου».

30 Ο Ισαάκ τους παρέθεσε πλούσιο γεύμα, έφαγαν και ήπιαν. 31 Την άλλη μέρα σηκώθηκαν νωρίς το πρωί κι ορκίστηκαν ο ένας στον άλλο. Έπειτα, ο Ισαάκ τους κατευόδωσε, κι εκείνοι έφυγαν ειρηνικά.

32 Την ίδια εκείνη μέρα οι δούλοι του Ισαάκ ήρθαν να του μιλήσουν για το πηγάδι που έσκαβαν, και του είπαν: «Βρήκαμε νερό». 33 Κι ο Ισαάκ ονόμασε το πηγάδι Σεβά (Όρκος). Γι’ αυτό και το όνομα της πόλης μέχρι σήμερα είναι Βέερ-Σεβά (Πηγάδι του Όρκου).

34 Ο Ησαύ σε ηλικία σαράντα ετών πήρε γυναίκες την Ιουδίθ, κόρη του Βεηρί του Χετταίου, και τη Βασεμάθ, κόρη του Αιλών του Χετταίου. 35 Αυτές έγιναν αιτία να πικραθούν ο Ισαάκ και η Ρεβέκκα.

1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: 7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. 8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. 9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. 10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. 11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.*26.12 received: Heb. found 13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great: *26.13 went…: Heb. went going 14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.*26.14 servants: or, husbandry 15 For all the wells which his father’s servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19 And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.*26.19 springing: Heb. living 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.*26.20 Esek: that is, Contention 21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.*26.21 Sitnah: that is, Hatred 22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.*26.22 Rehoboth: that is Room 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. 24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. 25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.

26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. 27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? 28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;*26.28 We saw…: Heb. 34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: 35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.*26.35 a grief…: Heb. bitterness of spirit
