1 Μετά από δύο χρόνια, ο Φαραώ είδε ένα όνειρο: Στεκόταν, λέει, κοντά στον ποταμό Νείλο, 2 και είδε ν’ ανεβαίνουν από το ποτάμι εφτά αγελάδες εύρωστες και παχιές, κι έβοσκαν στο χορτάρι. 3 Ύστερα απ’ αυτές, ανέβηκαν από το Νείλο άλλες εφτά αγελάδες άσχημες και καχεκτικές και στάθηκαν κοντά στις πρώτες, πλάι στις όχθες του ποταμού. 4 Οι εφτά άσχημες και καχεκτικές αγελάδες έφαγαν τις άλλες εφτά, τις ομορφόκορμες και παχιές. Τότε ο Φαραώ ξύπνησε. 5 Ξανακοιμήθηκε και είδε δεύτερο όνειρο: Εφτά στάχυα βλάστησαν πάνω στο ίδιο στέλεχος, μεστωμένα και ωραία. 6 Και μετά από κείνα, βλάστησαν άλλα εφτά στάχυα, λεπτά και καμένα από το λίβα· 7 και τα λεπτά στάχυα κατάπιαν τα εφτά στάχυα τα μεστωμένα και παχειά. Ο Φαραώ ξύπνησε και κατάλαβε πως ήταν όνειρο.

8 Το πρωί ο Φαραώ ήταν ανήσυχος. Έστειλε λοιπόν και κάλεσε όλους τους μάγους και τους σοφούς της Αιγύπτου και τους διηγήθηκε τα όνειρά του. Κανείς όμως δεν μπόρεσε να του τα εξηγήσει.

9 Τότε ο οινοχόος είπε: «Κύριέ μου, Φαραώ, τώρα θυμάμαι ένα λάθος που ’χω κάνει! 10 Όταν είχες οργιστεί εναντίον των δούλων σου και με είχες φυλακίσει εμένα και τον αρχιαρτοποιό στο σπίτι του αρχηγού των σωματοφυλάκων, 11 είδαμε ένα όνειρο την ίδια νύχτα, εγώ κι εκείνος, διαφορετικό όνειρο καθένας, με τη δική τους ιδιαίτερη σημασία. 12 Εκεί μαζί μας ήταν κι ένας νεαρός Εβραίος, δούλος του αρχηγού των σωματοφυλάκων. Του διηγηθήκαμε λοιπόν τα όνειρά μας, κι εκείνος μας εξήγησε τη σημασία τους. 13 Και όπως μας τα εξήγησε έτσι κι έγινε: Εμένα με αποκατέστησαν στη θέση μου και τον αρχιαρτοποιό τον κρέμασαν».

14 Τότε ο Φαραώ έστειλε και κάλεσε τον Ιωσήφ. Τον έβγαλαν γρήγορα από τη φυλακή, έκοψε τα μαλλιά του, άλλαξε ρούχα και παρουσιάστηκε στο Φαραώ. 15 Ο Φαραώ τού είπε: «Είδα ένα όνειρο, αλλά κανείς δεν μπόρεσε να μου το εξηγήσει. Άκουσα να λένε για σένα ότι εξηγείς ένα όνειρο όταν το ακούσεις».

16 Ο Ιωσήφ τού απάντησε: «Όχι εγώ· ο Θεός μπορεί να απαντήσει ευνοϊκά στο Φαραώ». 17 Τότε ο Φαραώ του είπε: «Είδα στο όνειρό μου ότι στεκόμουν κοντά στην όχθη του Νείλου. 18 Και ξάφνου από το Νείλο ανέβηκαν εφτά αγελάδες, παχιές και εύρωστες, κι έβοσκαν στο χορτάρι. 19 Ύστερα, μετά απ’ αυτές, ανέβηκαν άλλες εφτά αγελάδες ισχνές, πολύ άσχημες και καχεκτικές. Ποτέ δεν έχω δει σ’ όλη την Αίγυπτο τόσο άσχημες αγελάδες όσο αυτές. 20 Οι αγελάδες λοιπόν οι αδύνατες και άσχημες έφαγαν τις πρώτες, τις παχιές. 21 Και αφού τις κατάπιαν στην κοιλιά τους, κανείς δεν καταλάβαινε ότι ήταν εκεί μέσα. Τόσο η όψη τους ήταν το ίδιο άσχημη όπως και πριν. Και τότε ξύπνησα. 22 Κοιμήθηκα πάλι και είδα άλλο όνειρο, ότι εφτά στάχυα βλάστησαν από ένα στέλεχος, γεμάτα και ωραία. 23 Και άλλα εφτά στάχυα ξερά, λεπτά και καμένα από το λίβα βλάστησαν μετά απ’ αυτά. 24 Και τα λεπτά στάχυα κατάπιαν τα εφτά στάχυα, τα ωραία. Τα διηγήθηκα αυτά στους μάγους, αλλά κανείς δεν μπόρεσε να μου τα εξηγήσει».

25 Ο Ιωσήφ τότε είπε στο Φαραώ: «Το όνειρο του Φαραώ είναι ένα. Ο Θεός φανέρωσε στο Φαραώ εκείνο που πρόκειται να κάνει. 26 Οι εφτά ωραίες αγελάδες σημαίνουν εφτά χρόνια, και τα εφτά ωραία στάχυα σημαίνουν εφτά χρόνια. Πρόκειται για ένα και το αυτό όνειρο. 27 Οι εφτά αγελάδες, οι αδύνατες και άσχημες, που ανέβηκαν κατόπιν, σημαίνουν εφτά χρόνια, όπως και τα εφτά στάχυα τα λεπτά και καμένα από το λίβα, σημαίνουν εφτά χρόνια πείνας. 28 Αυτό είναι που είπα στο Φαραώ, ότι ο Θεός τού φανέρωσε εκείνο που πρόκειται να κάνει: 29 Θα έρθουν εφτά χρόνια μεγάλης αφθονίας σ’ ολόκληρη τη Αίγυπτο. 30,31 Ύστερα όμως απ’ αυτά θα έρθουν εφτά χρόνια πείνας, η οποία θα ερημώσει τη χώρα. Τόσο βαριά θα είναι εκείνη η πείνα, που κανένας στην Αίγυπτο δε θα θυμάται πια την προηγούμενη αφθονία στη χώρα. 32 Το γεγονός ότι ο Φαραώ είδε το όνειρο να επαναλαμβάνεται και δεύτερη φορά, σημαίνει ότι το πράγμα είναι αποφασισμένο απ’ το Θεό, και ότι θα το πραγματοποιήσει γρήγορα. 33 Και τώρα, ας φροντίσει ο Φαραώ να βρει έναν άνθρωπο μυαλωμένο και σοφό, και να τον διορίσει άρχοντα σ’ όλη την Αίγυπτο. 34 Επίσης, ας φροντίσει ώστε να διοριστούν επόπτες στη χώρα, για να κρατούν απ’ αυτήν το ένα πέμπτο κατά τα εφτά χρόνια της αφθονίας. 35 Θα συγκεντρώσουν όλα τα τρόφιμα των καλών χρόνων που έρχονται, και θα αποθηκεύσουν τα σιτηρά με εξουσιοδότηση του Φαραώ για τη διατροφή των πόλεων, και θα τα φυλάξουν. 36 Αυτές οι προμήθειες θα φυλαχτούν για τα εφτά χρόνια της πείνας που θα έρθουν στην Αίγυπτο, κι έτσι η χώρα δε θα αφανιστεί από την πείνα».

37 Αυτή η πρόταση φάνηκε καλή στο Φαραώ και σ’ όλους τους αξιωματούχους του, 38 και τους είπε: «Υπάρχει άλλος άνθρωπος σαν αυτόν εδώ, που να έχει μέσα του το Πνεύμα του Θεού» 39 Και στον Ιωσήφ είπε: «Αφού ο Θεός σε έκανε να τα ξέρεις όλα αυτά, δεν υπάρχει κανένας άλλος τόσο συνετός και σοφός, όπως εσύ. 40 Εσύ θα προΐστασαι στο ανάκτορό μου και όλος ο λαός μου θα υπακούει στις διαταγές σου. Μόνον ως προς το θρόνο θα είμαι ανώτερός σου. 41 Σ’ εσένα», του είπε, «παραδίδω την εξουσία πάνω σε όλη την Αίγυπτο».

42 Μ’ αυτά τα λόγια ο Φαραώ έβγαλε από το χέρι του το δαχτυλίδι με το σφραγιδόλιθό του και το πέρασε στο χέρι του Ιωσήφ, τον έντυσε με λινή φορεσιά, και του έβαλε τη χρυσή αλυσίδα στο λαιμό του. 43 Τον ανέβασε στο δεύτερο μετά το δικό του άρμα, και οι προπορευόμενοι αξιωματούχοι φώναζαν: «Γονατίστε!»

Έτσι ο Φαραώ έδωσε στον Ιωσήφ εξουσία πάνω σε όλη την Αίγυπτο. 44 «Εγώ είμαι ο Φαραώ», του είπε. «Χωρίς όμως τη δική σου έγκριση, κανείς δε θα κάνει τίποτα σ’ όλη τη χώρα». 45,46 Ο Ιωσήφ ήταν τριάντα χρονών όταν παρουσιάστηκε στο Φαραώ, το βασιλιά της Αιγύπτου. Αυτός τον ονόμασε Σοφνάχ-Πανεάχ, και του έδωσε για γυναίκα την Ασενάθ, κόρη του Ποτιφερά, ιερέα της Ηλιούπολης.

Μετά ο Ιωσήφ έφυγε να επιθεωρήσει όλη τη χώρα. 47 Στα εφτά χρόνια της αφθονίας, η παραγωγή της χώρας ήταν υπερεπαρκής. 48 Ο Ιωσήφ συγκέντρωσε όλη την παραγωγή αυτών των εφτά χρόνων στην Αίγυπτο και αποθήκευσε τα τρόφιμα στις πόλεις. Σε κάθε πόλη αποθήκευε την παραγωγή των χωραφιών που ήταν γύρω απ’ αυτήν. 49 Έτσι συσσώρευσε σιτηρά αναρίθμητα σαν την άμμο της θάλασσας. Τόσο πολλά ήταν, ώστε έπαψε πια να τα μετράει.

50 Πριν έρθουν τα χρόνια της πείνας, ο Ιωσήφ απέκτησε από την Ασενάθ, που ήταν κόρη του Ποτιφερά, ιερέα της Ηλιούπολης, δύο παιδιά. 51 Τον πρώτο τον ονόμασε Μανασσή,*Μανασσή Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η φρ. «αυτός που με κάνει να ξεχνώ». και είπε: «Ο Θεός μ’ έκανε να λησμονήσω όλες μου τις δυστυχίες και το σπίτι του πατέρα μου». 52 Τον δεύτερο τον ονόμασε Εφραΐμ,*Εφραΐμ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η φρ. «με πολλαπλασιάζει». και είπε: «Ο Θεός μού έδωσε παιδιά στη χώρα της δυστυχίας μου».

53 Τα εφτά χρόνια της αφθονίας στην Αίγυπτο πέρασαν, 54 κι άρχισαν να έρχονται τα εφτά χρόνια της πείνας, όπως το είχε προβλέψει ο Ιωσήφ. Και ενώ σε όλες τις χώρες επικρατούσε πείνα, στην Αίγυπτο υπήρχε ψωμί. 55 Όταν όμως η Αίγυπτος άρχισε κι αυτή να πεινάει και ο λαός φώναζε στο Φαραώ για ψωμί, ο Φαραώ είπε στους Αιγυπτίους: «Πηγαίνετε στον Ιωσήφ και κάνετε ό,τι σας πει». 56 Η πείνα γινόταν όλο και μεγαλύτερη κι απλωνόταν σ’ ολόκληρη τη χώρα. Ο Ιωσήφ τότε άνοιξε τις αποθήκες και πουλούσε στους Αιγυπτίους όσο σιτάρι υπήρχε σ’ αυτές. 57 Απ’ όλες τις χώρες έρχονταν στην Αίγυπτο, στον Ιωσήφ, για να αγοράσουν σιτηρά, γιατί η πείνα ήταν φοβερή σ’ ολόκληρη τη γη.

1 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. 2 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow. 3 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. 4 And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. 5 And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good.*41.5 rank: Heb. fat 6 And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. 7 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. 8 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

9 Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day: 10 Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard’s house, both me and the chief baker: 11 And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. 12 And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret. 13 And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged.

14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.*41.14 brought…: Heb. made him run 15 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it.*41.15 thou…: or, when thou hearest a dream thou canst interpret it 16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river: 18 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow: 19 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness: 20 And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine: 21 And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. 25 And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do. 26 The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one. 27 And the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine. 28 This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh. 29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: 30 And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; 31 And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous.*41.31 grievous: Heb. heavy 32 And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.*41.32 established…: or, prepared of God

33 Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years.*41.34 officers: or, overseers 35 And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.*41.36 perish…: Heb. be not cut off

37 And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. 38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? 39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: 40 Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.*41.40 be ruled: Heb. be armed, or, kiss 41 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. 42 And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;*41.42 fine…: or, silk 43 And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.*41.43 Bow…: or, Tender father: Heb. 46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 47 And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. 48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. 49 And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number. 50 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On bare unto him.*41.50 priest: or, prince 51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.*41.51 Manasseh: that is, Forgetting 52 And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.*41.52 Ephraim: that is, Fruitful

53 And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended. 54 And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. 56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt.*41.56 all the storehouses: Heb. all wherein was 57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.
