1 Ο Ιακώβ κάλεσε τους γιους του και τους είπε: «Συγκεντρωθείτε για να σας αναγγείλω τι θα συμβεί στο μέλλον. 2 Μαζευτείτε γιοι του Ιακώβ, ν’ ακούσετε τον Ισραήλ, τον πατέρα σας:

3 »Ρουβήν εσύ, πρωτότοκέ μου,

δύναμή μου και απαρχή του ανδρισμού μου,

υπέροχε σε αξία κι υπέροχε σε δύναμη,

4 ξεχειλίζεις σαν τα νερά.

Δε θα υπερισχύσεις,

γιατί στο κρεβάτι του πατέρα σου ανέβηκες,

και μόλυνες το στρώμα μου

όταν ανέβηκες σ’ αυτό.

5 Ο Συμεών και ο Λευί είναι αδέρφια,

όργανα του κακού τα ξίφη τους.

6 Ας μην πάει η ψυχή μου στη συνωμοσία τους,

στη συνάθροισή τους ας μην παρευρεθεί η καρδιά μου·

μέσ’ στο θυμό τους ανθρώπους δολοφόνησαν,

με την αυθαιρεσία τους ακρωτηρίασαν ταύρους.

7 Καταραμένος ο θυμός τους,

γιατ’ ήταν βίαιος·

και η οργή τους,

γιατ’ ήταν βάναυση.

Θα τους διαμοιράσω μέσα στον Ιακώβ,

θα τους διασκορπίσω μέσα στον Ισραήλ.

8 »Εσένα, Ιούδα, θα σε εγκωμιάζουν οι αδερφοί σου.

Η δύναμή σου θα εξουσιάζει

τους εχθρούς σου,

θα σε προσκυνήσουν του πατέρα σου οι γιοι.

9 Λιονταρόπουλο είναι ο Ιούδας.

Γιε μου, με αρπαγές μεγάλωσες.

Ξάπλωσε και κοιμήθηκε σαν το λιοντάρι και σαν το λιονταρόπουλο·

να τον ξυπνήσει ποιος τολμά;

10 Ποτέ ο Ιούδας την εξουσία δε θα χάσει,

ούτε το σκήπτρο του αρχηγού μέσ’ απ’ τα πόδια του,

ωσότου έρθει "άρχοντας",*άρχοντας. Στα εβρ. ο όρος είναι ασαφής.

σ’ αυτόν που οι λαοί θα υπακούσουν.

11 Στ’ αμπέλι δένει το πουλάρι του,

το γαϊδουράκι του στο κλήμα.*Η αφθονία θα είναι τόση, που δεν θα έχει σημασία αν το γαϊδουράκι φάει το κλήμα.

Πλένει μες στο κρασί τα ρούχα του,

στο αίμα των σταφυλιών τη φορεσιά του.

12 Θολά τα μάτια του είν’ απ’ το κρασί

κι άσπρα τα δόντια του απ’ το γάλα.*Το κρασί και το γάλα είναι δείγματα πλούτου της περιοχής του Ιούδα.

13 »Ο Ζαβουλών στην παραλία θα κατοικήσει

κι αυτός λιμάνι για τα πλοία θα ’ναι.

Θ’ απλώνονται τα σύνορα προς της Σιδώνας τη μεριά.

14 »Ο Ισσάχαρ, γεροδεμένος γάιδαρος,

που κείτεται μες στο φραγμένο το λιβάδι.

15 Είδε πως η ησυχία είναι καλή

κι η χώρα τόσο ευχάριστη.

Γι’ αυτό χαμήλωσε τη ράχη του να φορτωθεί

και θεληματικά έγινε δούλος.

16 »Ο Δαν θα κυβερνήσει το λαό του

σαν μια από τις φυλές του Ισραήλ.

17 Ο Δαν θα είναι σαν φίδι μες στο δρόμο,

σαν έχιδνα στο μονοπάτι,

τις φτέρνες που δαγκώνει του αλόγου

κι ο καβαλάρης πέφτει πίσω ανάποδα.

18 »Τη σωτηρία μου από σένα περιμένω, Κύριε!

19 »Στο Γαδ ενάντια συμμορίες θα επιτεθούν,

αλλά θα τους καταδιώξει εκείνος κατά πόδας.

20 »Του Ασήρ πλούσιο είναι το ψωμί

και φαγητά βασιλικά θα δίνει.

21 »Σαν το ελάφι το ελεύθερο ο Νεφθαλί,*Υπονοούνται τα δάση της περιοχής Νεφθαλί και οι γαζέλες που ζουν εκεί.

λόγια ομορφιάς προφέρει.

22 »Σαν νέο δέντρο καρποφόρο ο Ιωσήφ. Νέο καρποφόρο δέντρο στην πηγή κοντά·

τα κλαδιά του υψώνονται πάνω απ’ τον τοίχο.*Η έννοια του στ. είναι αβέβαιη.

23 Τον πίκραναν, τον τόξεψαν·

εκείνοι που τα βέλη ρίχνουν τον πολέμησαν.

24 Αλλά συντρίφτηκε το τόξο τους,

παρέλυσαν τα μπράτσα τους,

με τη βοήθεια του ισχυρού τού Ιακώβ,

βοήθεια από το βράχο του Ισραήλ,

25 απ’ του πατέρα σου το Θεό

που σε βοηθάει,

απ’ το Θεό τον παντοδύναμο, που σ’ ευλογεί.

Του ουρανού ευλογίες από πάνω

και της αβύσσου ευλογίες, που κάτω απλώνεται,

των μαστών ευλογίες και της μήτρας.

26 Οι ευλογίες του πατέρα σου ξεπέρασαν

τις ευλογίες των αιώνιων βουνών,

την ομορφιά των αιωνίων λόφων.

Ας έρθουν στο κεφάλι του Ιωσήφ,

στο μέτωπο εκείνου

που ξεχωρίζει από τ’ αδέρφια του.

27 »Ο Βενιαμίν είναι σαν λύκος που ξεσκίζει.

Το πρωί τρώει το θήραμα

και το βράδυ τα λάφυρα μοιράζει».

28 Όλοι αυτοί αποτελούν τις δώδεκα φυλές του Ισραήλ, κι αυτά ήταν τα λόγια που τους είπε ο πατέρας τους, καθώς τους ευλογούσε, τον καθένα με ξεχωριστή ευλογία. 29 Ύστερα τους έδωσε αυτές τις προσταγές: «Τώρα εγώ θα πάω μαζί με τους νεκρούς του λαού μου. Να με θάψετε κοντά στους προγόνους μου, στο σπήλαιο που βρίσκεται στο χωράφι του Εφρών, του Χετταίου, 30 στον αγρό Μαχπελά, απέναντι στη Μαμβρή, στη Χαναάν. Τον αγρό εκείνο τον έχει αγοράσει ο Αβραάμ από τον Εφρών το Χετταίο, για ιδιόκτητο τάφο. 31 Εκεί έθαψαν τον Αβραάμ και τη γυναίκα του τη Σάρρα. Εκεί έθαψαν τον Ισαάκ και τη γυναίκα του τη Ρεβέκκα, και εκεί έθαψα εγώ τη Λεία, 32 στον αγρό που αγοράστηκε από το Χετταίο, μαζί με το σπήλαιό του».

33 Όταν ο Ιακώβ τελείωσε τις εντολές του προς τους γιους του, μάζεψε τα πόδια του στο κρεβάτι και ξεψύχησε· πήγε μαζί με τους νεκρούς του λαού του.

1 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days. 2 Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.

3 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: 4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.*49.4 thou shalt…: Heb. do not thou excel*49.4 he went…: or, my couch is gone

5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.*49.5 instruments…: or, their swords are weapons of violence 6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.*49.6 digged…: or, houghed oxen 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

8 Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee. 9 Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? 10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. 11 Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: 12 His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

13 Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon.

14 Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens: 15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.

16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.*49.17 an adder: Heb. an arrow-snake 18 I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.

19 Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.

20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.

21 Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words.

22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:*49.22 branches: Heb. daughters 23 The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: 24 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:) 25 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb: 26 The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

27 Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. 29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah. 32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth. 33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
