1 Ο Αδάμ συνευρέθηκε με την Εύα τη γυναίκα του, κι εκείνη έμεινε έγκυος και γέννησε τον Κάιν*Κάιν. Στα εβρ. σημαίνει «απόκτημα». και είπε: «Απέκτησα άνθρωπο με τη βοήθεια του Κυρίου». 2 Έπειτα γέννησε τον αδερφό του τον Άβελ.*Άβελ. Στα εβρ. σημαίνει «πνοή», «μηδαμινότητα». Ο Άβελ έγινε βοσκός προβάτων και ο Κάιν γεωργός.

3 Ύστερα από καιρό, ο Κάιν πρόσφερε στον Κύριο θυσία από τους καρπούς της γης. 4 Ο Άβελ πρόσφερε κι αυτός από τα πρωτότοκα πρόβατα του κοπαδιού του και μάλιστα τα παχύτερα μέρη τους. Ο Κύριος είδε με ευμένεια τον Άβελ και τη θυσία του. 5 Στον Κάιν όμως και στη δική του θυσία δεν έδειξε ευμένεια. Τότε εξοργίστηκε ο Κάιν και σκυθρώπιασε. 6 Κι ο Κύριος του είπε: «Γιατί οργίστηκες και σκυθρώπιασες; 7 Αν πράξεις το σωστό, θα ξαναβρείς το κέφι σου. Αν όχι, η αμαρτία δεν παύει να παραμονεύει σαν θηρίο στην πόρτα. Εσένα επιθυμεί· εσύ όμως πρέπει να κυριαρχήσεις πάνω της».*Στο εβρ. ο στ. είναι ασαφής και διορθώνεται.

8 Τότε ο Κάιν είπε στον Άβελ, τον αδερφό του: «Πάμε στα χωράφια». Κι εκεί, στα χωράφια, όρμησε ο Κάιν εναντίον του Άβελ και τον σκότωσε.

9 Ο Κύριος ρώτησε τον Κάιν: «Πού είναι ο αδερφός σου ο Άβελ;» Εκείνος απάντησε: «Δεν ξέρω. Μήπως φύλακας του αδερφού μου είμαι εγώ;» 10 Είπε τότε ο Κύριος: «Τι πήγες κι έκανες; Άκου! Το αίμα του αδερφού σου μου φωνάζει γοερά από τη γη! 11 Από ’δω και πέρα θα σε καταριέται η ίδια η γη, που άνοιξε για να δεχτεί το αίμα του αδερφού σου, που εσύ τον σκότωσες. 12 Όταν θα την καλλιεργείς, δεν θα σου δίνει πια τους καρπούς της.*τους καρπούς της. Κατά λέξη: «τη δύναμή της». Φυγάς θα είσαι και περιπλανώμενος για πάντα πάνω στη γη».

13 Τότε ο Κάιν είπε στον Κύριο: «Βαριά είναι η τιμωρία μου! Δεν μπορώ να την αντέξω! 14 Σήμερα με διώχνεις από τη χώρα, και πρέπει να χαθώ από μπροστά σου και να γίνω φυγάς, περιπλανώμενος στη γη. Όποιος με βρει θα με σκοτώσει». 15 Κι ο Κύριος του αποκρίθηκε: «Δε θα συμβεί αυτό, γιατί οποιοσδήποτε σκοτώσει τον Κάιν, θα αντιμετωπίσει επταπλάσια εκδίκηση». Κι έβαλε σημάδι στον Κάιν, ώστε όποιος θα τον συναντούσε να μην τον σκοτώσει. 16 Έτσι ο Κάιν έφυγε από τον τόπο όπου του είχε μιλήσει ο Κύριος*από τον τόπο... Κύριος. Το εβρ. έχει κατά λ. «από το πρόσωπο του Κυρίου». και πήγε να ζήσει στη χώρα Νωδ, ανατολικά της Εδέμ.

17 Ο Κάιν συνευρέθηκε με τη γυναίκα του κι εκείνη έμεινε έγκυος και γέννησε τον Ενώχ. Έπειτα έχτισε μια πόλη και την ονόμασε με το όνομα του γιου του, Ενώχ. 18 Από τον Ενώχ γεννήθηκε ο Ιράδ και ο Ιράδ απέκτησε το Μεχουϊαήλ· ο Μεχουϊαήλ απέκτησε το Μαθουσάλα κι ο Μαθουσάλα απέκτησε το Λάμεχ.

19 Ο Λάμεχ πήρε δύο γυναίκες. Το όνομα της μιας ήταν Αδά και της άλλης Σιλλά. 20 Η Αδά γέννησε τον Ιαβάλ. Αυτός έγινε ο γενάρχης των σκηνιτών και των κτηνοτρόφων. 21 Το όνομα του αδερφού του ήταν Ιουβάλ. Αυτός έγινε γενάρχης εκείνων που παίζουν κιθάρα και αυλό. 22 Η Σιλλά γέννησε κι αυτή τον Τουβάλ-Κάιν, το γενάρχη εκείνων που επεξεργάζονται το χαλκό και το σίδερο. Αδερφή του Τουβάλ-Κάιν ήταν η Νααμά. 23 Τότε είπε ο Λάμεχ στις γυναίκες του, την Αδά και τη Σιλλά:

«Ακούστε με, γυναίκες του Λάμεχ,

στα λόγια μου δώστε προσοχή:

Άνθρωπο σκότωσα γιατί με πλήγωσε,

έναν νέο γιατί με χτύπησε.

24 Αν στην περίπτωση του Κάιν

προβλεπόταν επταπλάσια εκδίκηση,

στην περίπτωση του Λάμεχ

προβλέπεται εβδομήντα εφτά φορές μεγαλύτερη».

25 Ο Αδάμ συνευρέθηκε πάλι με τη γυναίκα του κι εκείνη γέννησε γιο. «Ο Θεός μού έδωσε άλλον απόγονο», είπε, «αντί για τον Άβελ, που τον σκότωσε ο Κάιν». Και τον ονόμασε Σηθ.*Σηθ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «δόθηκε».26 Ο Σηθ απέκτησε κι εκείνος γιο και τον ονόμασε Ενώς. Τότε ήταν που οι άνθρωποι άρχισαν να προσεύχονται στο Θεό ονομάζοντάς τον «Κύριο».*Κύριο. Το εβρ. έχει «Γιαχβέ».

6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.*4.7 be accepted: or, have the excellency*4.7 unto…: or, subject unto thee 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.*4.10 blood: Heb. bloods 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.*4.13 My…: or, Mine iniquity is greater than that it may be forgiven 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.*4.17 Enoch: Heb. 19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. 21 And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. 22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.*4.22 instructer: Heb. whetter

23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.*4.23 I have…: or, I would slay a man in my wound, etc.*4.23 to my hurt: or, in my hurt 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.*4.25 Seth: Heb.
