1 Ο Ισαάκ κάλεσε τον Ιακώβ, τον ευλόγησε και τον πρόσταξε: «Μην πάρεις γυναίκα από τις κόρες της Χαναάν. 2 Σήκω, πήγαινε στη Μεσοποταμία, στο σπίτι του Βεθουήλ, του πατέρα της μητέρας σου, και πάρε από ’κει για γυναίκα σου μια απ’ τις κόρες του Λάβαν, του αδερφού της. 3 Κι ο παντοδύναμος Θεός να σε ευλογήσει, να σου δώσει πάρα πολλούς απογόνους, και να σε κάνει γενάρχη ενός πλήθους λαών. 4 Να σου δώσει την ευλογία του Αβραάμ σ’ εσένα και στους απογόνους σου, ώστε να πάρεις ιδιοκτησία σου τη χώρα όπου τώρα σαν ξένος κατοικείς, και που την έδωσε ο Θεός στον Αβραάμ».

5 Έτσι, ο Ισαάκ κατευόδωσε τον Ιακώβ, κι εκείνος έφυγε για τη Μεσοποταμία να πάει στο Λάβαν, γιο του Βεθουήλ του Αραμαίου και αδερφό της Ρεβέκκας, μάνας του Ιακώβ και του Ησαύ.

6 Ο Ησαύ είδε ότι ο Ισαάκ ευλόγησε τον Ιακώβ και τον έστειλε να φύγει στη Μεσοποταμία για να πάρει από ’κει γυναίκα. Επίσης είδε ότι καθώς ο Ισαάκ τον ευλογούσε, τον πρόσταξε να μην πάρει γυναίκα από τις κόρες της Χαναάν, 7 κι ότι ο Ιακώβ άκουσε τον πατέρα του και τη μητέρα του και έφυγε στη Μεσοποταμία. 8 Τότε κατάλαβε ότι οι κόρες της Χαναάν δεν άρεσαν στον πατέρα του. 9 Γι’ αυτό πήγε στον Ισμαήλ, γιο του Αβραάμ και πήρε για γυναίκα την κόρη του τη Μαχαλάθ, αδερφή του Νεβαϊώθ, χώρια απ’ τις άλλες γυναίκες που είχε.

10 Ο Ιακώβ έφυγε από τη Βέερ-Σεβά και πήγαινε προς τη Χαρράν. 11 Όταν έδυε ο ήλιος έφτασε σ’ έναν τόπο όπου και έμεινε για να διανυκτερεύσει. Έβαλε ένα λιθάρι για προσκέφαλό του και κοιμήθηκε εκεί. 12 Στον ύπνο του τη νύχτα είδε μια σκάλα, που στηριζότανε στη γη και η κορυφή της άγγιζε τον ουρανό. Πάνω της ανέβαιναν και κατέβαιναν άγγελοι του Θεού. 13 Κι ο Κύριος στάθηκε πάνω της και του είπε: «Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των πατέρων σου Αβραάμ και Ισαάκ. Αυτή τη χώρα που κοιμάσαι θα τη δώσω σ’ εσένα και στους απογόνους σου. 14 Πλήθος θα είναι οι απόγονοί σου όπως οι κόκκοι της σκόνης στη γη. Θα επεκταθείς δυτικά*δυτικά. Κατά λ. «προς τη θάλασσα». και ανατολικά, βόρεια και νότια, και θα ευλογηθούν στο πρόσωπό σου και μέσω των απογόνων σου όλα τα έθνη της γης. 15 Εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σου και θα σε φυλάω όπου κι αν πηγαίνεις, και θα σε φέρω πίσω σ’ αυτήν εδώ τη χώρα. Δε θα σε αφήσω ώσπου να πραγματοποιήσω την υπόσχεσή μου».

16 Ο Ιακώβ ξύπνησε τρομαγμένος και είπε: «Αλήθεια, ο Κύριος είναι σ’ αυτό τον τόπο κι εγώ δεν το ήξερα! 17 Τι φοβερός τόπος! Εδώ δεν είναι παρά ο οίκος του Θεού, κι αυτή είναι η πύλη του ουρανού». 18 Το πρωί που σηκώθηκε, πήρε το λιθάρι που το είχε για προσκέφαλό του, το έστησε ως ιερή στήλη, κι έχυσε λάδι πάνω στην κορφή της. 19 Και ονόμασε τον τόπο εκείνο Βαιθήλ (Οίκος Θεού), ενώ πρωτύτερα ονομαζόταν Λουζ. 20 Τότε ο Ιακώβ έκανε τάξιμο: «Αν ο Θεός είναι μαζί μου και με προστατεύσει στο ταξίδι που τώρα αρχίζω, αν μου δίνει τροφή να τρώω και ρούχα να φορώ, 21 και με βοηθήσει να γυρίσω γερός στο σπίτι του πατέρα μου, τότε ο Κύριος θα είναι ο Θεός μου. 22 Αυτό το λιθάρι που έστησα ως ιερή στήλη θα γίνει τόπος λατρείας του Θεού· κι από όλα όσα αυτός θα μου δίνει, εγώ θα του δίνω το ένα δέκατο».

6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; 7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padan-aram; 8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;*28.8 pleased…: Heb. were evil in the eyes, etc 9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.*28.9 Mahalath: or, Bashemath

10 And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.*28.10 Haran: Gr. Charran 11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; 14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.*28.14 spread…: Heb. break forth 15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. 17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. 18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.*28.19 Beth-el: that is, The house of God 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, 21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God: 22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
