1 Ο Αβραάμ πήρε κι άλλη γυναίκα, που ονομαζόταν Χεττούρα. 2 Αυτή του γέννησε το Ζιμράν, τον Ιοξάν, το Μαδά, το Μαδιάν, τον Ισβάκ και το Σουάχ. 3 Ο Ιοξάν απέκτησε το Σεβά και το Δεδάν. Απόγονοι του Δεδάν ήταν οι Ασσουρίμ, οι Λετουσίμ και οι Λεουμίμ. 4 Οι γιοι του Μαδιάν ήταν ο Γαιφά, ο Εφέρ, ο Χανώχ, ο Αβειδά και ο Ελδαγά. Όλοι αυτοί ήταν παιδιά της Χεττούρας.

5 Ο Αβραάμ μεταβίβασε όλη του την περιουσία στον Ισαάκ. 6 Στα παιδιά των παλλακίδων του έδωσε δώρα και τα έστειλε, ενώ ακόμα ζούσε, μακριά από τον Ισαάκ το γιο του, στη χώρα της Ανατολής.

7 Ο Αβραάμ έζησε εκατόν εβδομήντα πέντε χρόνια 8 και πέθανε σε βαθιά γεράματα· πήγε μαζί με τους νεκρούς του λαού του. 9 Τον έθαψαν ο Ισαάκ και ο Ισμαήλ οι γιοι του, στο σπήλαιο Μαχπελά, στον αγρό του Εφρών, γιου του Σωχάρ του Χετταίου, απέναντι από τη Μαμβρή. 10 Είναι ο αγρός, που είχε αγοράσει ο Αβραάμ από τους Χετταίους. Εκεί ενταφιάστηκαν ο Αβραάμ και η γυναίκα του η Σάρρα.

11 Μετά το θάνατο του Αβραάμ, ο Θεός ευλόγησε τον Ισαάκ, το γιο του. Ο Ισαάκ κατοικούσε κοντά στο πηγάδι Λαχαΐ-Ροΐ.

12 Αυτές είναι οι φυλές του Ισμαήλ, γιου του Αβραάμ που του γέννησε η Άγαρ η Αιγύπτια, δούλη της Σάρρας. 13 Τα ονόματα των γιων του κατά σειρά γεννήσεως είναι: Νεβαϊώθ ο πρωτότοκος του Ισμαήλ, Κηδάρ, Αδβεήλ και Μιβσάμ, 14 Μισμά, Δουμά, Μασσά, 15 Χαδάδ, Θαιμά, Ιετούρ, Ναφίς και Κεδμά. 16 Αυτοί ήταν και οι αρχηγοί των δώδεκα φυλών του Ισμαήλ. Καθένας έδωσε το όνομά του στη φυλή του και στους διάφορους τόπους όπου η φυλή εγκαθίστατο και κατασκήνωνε. 17 Ο Ισμαήλ έζησε εκατόν τριάντα εφτά χρόνια και πέθανε· πήγε μαζί με τους νεκρούς του λαού του. 18 Οι απόγονοί του εγκαταστάθηκαν από την Ευειλά ως τη Σουρ, ανατολικά της Αιγύπτου, προς την κατεύθυνση της Ασσυρίας. Εγκαταστάθηκαν δηλαδή χώρια από τους άλλους απογόνους του Αβραάμ.

19 Αυτό είναι το βιβλίο των γενεαλογιών του Ισαάκ:

Ο Ισαάκ ήταν γιος του Αβραάμ. 20 Σε ηλικία σαράντα ετών πήρε γυναίκα του τη Ρεβέκκα, κόρη του Βεθουήλ του Αραμαίου από τη Μεσοποταμία, αδερφή του Λάβαν, του Αραμαίου. 21 Η Ρεβέκκα όμως ήταν στείρα, κι ο Ισαάκ προσευχήθηκε στον Κύριο γι’ αυτό. Ο Κύριος άκουσε την προσευχή του και η Ρεβέκκα έμεινε έγκυος με δίδυμα στην κοιλιά της. 22 Τα παιδιά όμως συγκρούονταν μέσα της, κι εκείνη φώναζε: «Αν είναι έτσι, γιατί να μείνω έγκυος;» Πήγε λοιπόν να ρωτήσει τον Κύριο. 23 Ο Κύριος της απάντησε:

«Δύο έθνη είναι στην κοιλιά σου,

δύο λαοί θα βγουν από τα σπλάχνα σου.

Ο ένας λαός θα υποτάξει τον άλλο,

ο μεγαλύτερος θα γίνει δούλος στον μικρότερο».

24 Όταν έφτασε η μέρα της γέννας, η Ρεβέκκα έκανε πράγματι δίδυμους γιους. 25 Αυτός που βγήκε πρώτος ήταν εντελώς κόκκινος και τριχωτός σαν μανδύας, και τον ονόμασαν Ησαύ.*Ησαύ. Στα εβρ. σημαίνει «δασύτριχος».26 Μετά βγήκε ο αδερφός του, που με το χέρι του κρατούσε τη φτέρνα του Ησαύ, και τον ονόμασαν Ιακώβ.*Ιακώβ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «φτέρνα» (βλ. και υποσ. εις κεφ. 27:36). Ο Ισαάκ ήταν εξήντα χρονών όταν γεννήθηκαν οι γιοι του.

27 Τα παιδιά μεγάλωσαν. Ο Ησαύ έγινε εξαίρετος κυνηγός, άνθρωπος της υπαίθρου, ενώ ο Ιακώβ ήταν ήσυχος άνθρωπος, που του άρεσε να μένει στη σκηνή. 28 Ο Ισαάκ αγαπούσε τον Ησαύ, γιατί του άρεσαν τα φαγητά του κυνηγιού· η Ρεβέκκα όμως αγαπούσε τον Ιακώβ.

29 Κάποτε που ο Ιακώβ ετοίμαζε ένα φαγητό, έτυχε να γυρίσει ο Ησαύ κατάκοπος από τους αγρούς. 30 Ο Ησαύ είπε στον Ιακώβ: «Έλα, άσε με να φάω απ’ αυτό το κοκκινωπό φαγητό, γιατί είμαι εξαντλημένος». Γι’ αυτό και τον Ησαύ τον ονόμασαν Εδώμ.*Εδώμ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «κόκκινος».

31 Ο Ιακώβ του απάντησε: «Πούλησέ μου σήμερα τα δικαιώματά σου του πρωτοτόκου».

32 Κι ο Ησαύ είπε: «Εγώ πεθαίνω τώρα! Τι να τα κάνω τα δικαιώματα του πρωτοτόκου;»

33 «Ορκίσου τό μου τώρα!» του είπε ο Ιακώβ. Ο Ησαύ τού το ορκίστηκε και πούλησε στον αδερφό του τα δικαιώματα του πρωτοτόκου. 34 Τότε ο Ιακώβ έδωσε στον Ησαύ ψωμί και φακή. Εκείνος έφαγε, ήπιε κι ύστερα σηκώθηκε και έφυγε. Έτσι ο Ησαύ παραιτήθηκε από τα δικαιώματα του πρωτοτόκου.

1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. 2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim. 4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac. 6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country. 7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years. 8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people. 9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; 10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahai-roi.

12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, bare unto Abraham: 13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, 14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, 15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:*25.15 Hadar: or, Hadad 16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations. 17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people. 18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.*25.18 died: Heb. fell

19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac: 20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian. 21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD. 23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. 26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. 27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. 28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.*25.28 he…: Heb. venison was in his mouth
