1 Βλέποντας η Ραχήλ ότι δε γεννούσε παιδιά στον Ιακώβ, ζήλεψε την αδερφή της και είπε στον άντρα της: «Δώσ’ μου παιδιά, αλλιώς θα πεθάνω». 2 Ο Ιακώβ θύμωσε με τη Ραχήλ και της είπε: «Θεός είμ’ εγώ; Αυτός σου στέρησε την ικανότητα να γεννάς». 3 Τότε η Ραχήλ είπε: «Να η δούλη μου η Βαλλά. Πήγαινε μαζί της κι ας γεννήσει στα γόνατά μου. Έτσι θ’ αποχτήσω κι εγώ παιδιά μέσω αυτής».*Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 16:2.4 Του έδωσε, λοιπόν, τη δούλη της τη Βαλλά για γυναίκα, κι ο Ιακώβ κοιμήθηκε μαζί της. 5 Η Βαλλά έμεινε έγκυος και του γέννησε γιο. 6 Τότε είπε η Ραχήλ: «Ο Θεός με δικαίωσε! Άκουσε την προσευχή μου και μου έδωσε γιο»· και τον ονόμασε Δαν.*Δαν. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «δικαιοσύνη».7 Η Βαλλά έμεινε πάλι έγκυος και γέννησε δεύτερο γιο στον Ιακώβ. 8 Τότε είπε η Ραχήλ: «Μεγάλους αγώνες έκανα ενάντια στην αδερφή μου και νίκησα»· και τον ονόμασε Νεφθαλί.*Νεφθαλί. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «αγώνας».9 Η Λεία βλέποντας ότι έπαψε να γεννάει, πήρε τη δούλη της τη Ζελφά και την έδωσε στον Ιακώβ για γυναίκα.*Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 16:2.10 Η Ζελφά γέννησε στον Ιακώβ γιο. 11 Τότε είπε η Λεία: «Τι ευτυχία!» –και τον ονόμασε Γαδ.*Γαδ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «ευτυχία».12 Η Ζελφά γέννησε και δεύτερο γιο στον Ιακώβ. 13 Τότε είπε η Λεία: «Είμαι ευτυχισμένη και θα με καλοτυχίζουν οι γυναίκες»· και τον ονόμασε Ασήρ.*Ασήρ. Στα εβρ. σημαίνει «ευτυχής».

14 Την εποχή του θερισμού των σιτηρών ο Ρουβήν βγήκε στους αγρούς και βρήκε μήλα του μανδραγόρα και τα έφερε στη Λεία τη μητέρα του. Τότε η Ραχήλ είπε στη Λεία: «Δώσ’ μου από τα μήλα του μανδραγόρα που βρήκε ο γιος σου». 15 Εκείνη της απάντησε: «Λίγο είναι που μου πήρες τον άντρα μου, θέλεις να μου πάρεις και τα μήλα του μανδραγόρα του γιου μου;» Και είπε η Ραχήλ: «Σε αντάλλαγμα για τα μήλα του μανδραγόρα του γιου σου, θα κοιμηθεί ο Ιακώβ μαζί σου απόψε».

16 Το βράδυ, την ώρα που ο Ιακώβ γύριζε από τον αγρό, βγήκε η Λεία να τον προϋπαντήσει και του είπε: «Σ’ εμένα θα έρθεις, γιατί σε πλήρωσα με αντίτιμο τα μήλα του μανδραγόρα του γιου μου». Ο Ιακώβ κοιμήθηκε μ’ αυτήν εκείνη τη νύχτα 17 και ο Θεός άκουσε τη Λεία. Έμεινε έγκυος και γέννησε πέμπτο γιο στον Ιακώβ. 18 «Ο Θεός με αντάμειψε», είπε, «γιατί έδωσα τη δούλη μου στον άντρα μου»· και τον ονόμασε Ισσάχαρ.*Ισσάχαρ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η φρ. «υπάρχει ανταμοιβή».19 Μετά έμεινε πάλι έγκυος και γέννησε έκτο γιο στον Ιακώβ. 20 «Ο Θεός μού έδωσε ένα ωραίο δώρο», είπε. «Αυτή τη φορά ο άντρας μου θα με παραδεχτεί, γιατί του γέννησα έξι γιους»· και τον ονόμασε Ζαβουλών.*Ζαβουλών. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως οι λ. «παραδέχομαι» και «δώρο».21 Έπειτα γέννησε κόρη και την ονόμασε Δείνα.*Δείνα. Στα εβρ. σημαίνει «κρίση».

22 Τότε ο Θεός θυμήθηκε τη Ραχήλ· άκουσε την προσευχή της και της έδωσε την ικανότητα να ξανακάνει παιδιά. 23 Εκείνη έμεινε έγκυος και γέννησε γιο. «Ο Θεός έβγαλε από πάνω μου την ντροπή μου», είπε. 24 «Άς μου δώσει ο Κύριος κι άλλον γιο»· και τον ονόμασε Ιωσήφ.*Ιωσήφ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η φρ. «είθε να δώσει και άλλον».

25 Όταν πια η Ραχήλ γέννησε και τον Ιωσήφ, ο Ιακώβ είπε στο Λάβαν: «Άσε με να φύγω και να πάω στον τόπο μου, στην πατρίδα μου. 26 Δώσε μου τις γυναίκες μου, που γι’ αυτές σου δούλεψα, και τα παιδιά μου, και να φύγω. Εσύ ξέρεις πόσο σου δούλεψα».

27 Ο Λάβαν του είπε: «Αν μου επιτρέπεις να σου πω,*Αν... πω. Κατά λ. «Αν βρήκα χάρη στα μάτια σου...» έχω καταλάβει ότι ο Κύριος με ευλόγησε εξαιτίας σου. 28 Όρισέ μου», του λέει, «την αμοιβή σου κι εγώ θα σου τη δώσω». 29 Ο Ιακώβ του είπε: «Εσύ ξέρεις πόσο σου δούλεψα, και πόσα έγιναν τα κοπάδια σου με τη δική μου φροντίδα. 30 Είχες λίγα πριν έρθω, και έγιναν πολλά· πράγματι, ο Θεός σε ευλόγησε με τον ερχομό μου. Τώρα πρέπει κι εγώ να φροντίσω το σπίτι μου». 31 Ο Λάβαν ρώτησε: «Τι να σου δώσω για μισθό;» Κι ο Ιακώβ απάντησε: «Δε θα μου δώσεις τίποτε. Αν μου κάνεις αυτό που θα σου πω, εγώ πάλι θα βοσκήσω τα πρόβατά σου και θα σου τα φυλάξω: 32 Θα περάσω σήμερα απ’ όλα τα κοπάδια σου. Βάλε στην άκρη όσα πρόβατα είναι διάστικτα και παρδαλά, και όσα είναι τελείως μαύρα· κι από τα κατσίκια όσα είναι διάστικτα και παρδαλά. Αυτά θα είναι ο μισθός μου.

33 »Έτσι θ’ αποδεικνύεται η εντιμότητά μου στο μέλλον, όταν θα έρχεσαι για να ελέγξεις το μισθό μου: Αν θα έχω κατσίκια που δε θα είναι διάστικτα ή παρδαλά ή πρόβατα που δε θα είναι μαύρα, αυτά θα θεωρούνται ότι τα έχω κλέψει».

34 «Σύμφωνοι», είπε ο Λάβαν, «ας γίνει όπως το λες». 35 Την ίδια μέρα όμως ξεχώρισε ο Λάβαν όσους τράγους είχαν ραβδώσεις ή ήταν διάστικτοι και παρδαλοί κι όσες κατσίκες ήταν διάστικτες και παρδαλές, καθώς και όλα τα πρόβατα που ήταν σκουρόχρωμα ή τελείως μαύρα, και τα έδωσε να τα φυλάνε οι γιοι του. 36 Και απομακρύνθηκε σε απόσταση τριών ημερών από τον Ιακώβ. Ο Ιακώβ έβοσκε τα υπόλοιπα πρόβατα του Λάβαν. 37 Τότε κι ο Ιακώβ πήρε χλωρές βέργες από λεύκα, αμυγδαλιά και πλάτανο, τις ξεφλούδισε σε ορισμένα σημεία, για να φανεί το άσπρο, 38 και τις έβαλε μέσα στις ποτίστρες όπου θα πήγαιναν τα κοπάδια να ποτιστούν, ακριβώς εκεί που κυλούσε το νερό, για να τις βλέπουν τα ζώα. Καθώς εκείνα έρχονταν να πιουν, ζευγάρωναν. 39 Τα θηλυκά πρόβατα ζευγάρωναν μπροστά στις παρδαλές βέργες κι έτσι γεννούσαν αρνιά ραβδωτά και διάστικτα ή παρδαλά. 40 Ο Ιακώβ ξεχώριζε τα αρνιά από τις κατσίκες, και τα έβαζε να κοιτάζουν προς τα ραβδωτά και προς τα μαύρα πρόβατα των κοπαδιών του Λάβαν. Μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο έκανε δικά του κοπάδια, τα οποία τα κράτησε ξέχωρα από κείνα του Λάβαν. 41 Κάθε φορά που τα δυνατά θηλυκά πρόβατα ήταν σε οργασμό, έβαζε ο Ιακώβ τις παρδαλές βέργες μπροστά τους μέσα στις ποτίστρες, για να ζευγαρώνουν μπροστά στις βέργες. 42 Όταν όμως τα θηλυκά πρόβατα ήταν ασθενικά δεν έβαζε τις βέργες. Έτσι, τα πρόβατα που ανήκαν στο Λάβαν ήταν τα αδύνατα, ενώ του Ιακώβ ήταν τα δυνατά.

43 Έτσι ο άνθρωπος αυτός έγινε πάμπλουτος· απέκτησε πάρα πολλά κοπάδια, δούλες και δούλους, καμήλες και γαϊδούρια.

14 And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes. 15 And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes. 16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. 25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country. 26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee. 27 And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake. 28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it. 29 And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me. 30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?*30.30 increased: Heb. broken forth*30.30 since…: Heb. at my foot 31 And he said, What shall I give thee? 37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods. 38 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink. 39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted. 40 And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban’s cattle. 41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods. 42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s. 43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.
