1 Η πείνα όμως δυνάμωνε στη χώρα. 2 Κι όταν στην οικογένεια του Ιακώβ σώθηκε όλο το στάρι που είχαν φέρει από την Αίγυπτο, τους είπε ο πατέρας τους: «Πηγαίνετε πάλι να μας αγοράσετε λίγα τρόφιμα». 3 Ο Ιούδας όμως του απάντησε: «Ο άνθρωπος εκείνος μας προειδοποίησε ξεκάθαρα: "δε θα παρουσιαστείτε μπροστά μου αν δεν έχετε μαζί σας τον αδερφό σας". 4 Αν λοιπόν έχεις τη διάθεση να στείλεις μαζί μας τον αδερφό μας, τότε θα κατεβούμε να σου αγοράσουμε τροφές. 5 Αν όμως δε θέλεις να τον στείλεις, εμείς δεν κατεβαίνουμε, γιατί ο άνθρωπος μας είπε: "δε θα παρουσιαστείτε μπροστά μου χωρίς να έχετε μαζί σας τον αδερφό σας"».

6 Τότε ο Ισραήλ είπε: «Γιατί μου κάνατε αυτό το κακό να φανερώσετε σ’ εκείνον τον άνθρωπο ότι έχετε έναν ακόμη αδερφό;» 7 Αυτοί απάντησαν: «Ο άνθρωπος εκείνος μας ρωτούσε συνέχεια για μας και για την οικογένειά μας: "Ζει ακόμα ο πατέρας σας;" έλεγε. "Έχετε άλλον αδερφό;" Κι εμείς του αποκριθήκαμε σ’ αυτά τα ερωτήματα. Πού να ξέραμε ότι θα μας ζητούσε να του πάμε τον αδερφό μας!» 8 Τότε ο Ιούδας είπε στον Ισραήλ: «Άσε το παιδί να ’ρθεί μαζί μου, και να σηκωθούμε να φύγουμε για να επιβιώσουμε και να μην πεθάνουμε της πείνας κι εμείς κι εσύ και τα παιδιά μας. 9 Μπαίνω εγώ εγγυητής γι’ αυτό το παιδί· από μένα θα το ζητήσεις. Αν δεν σου το φέρω πάλι πίσω και δε σου το παρουσιάσω, εγώ θα είμαι ο ένοχος απέναντί σου για όλη μου τη ζωή. 10 Αν δεν είχαμε καθυστερήσει, τώρα θα είχαμε γυρίσει πίσω για δεύτερη φορά».

11 Τότε ο πατέρας τους τούς είπε: «Αφού λοιπόν είναι ανάγκη να γίνει αυτό, έτσι να κάνετε. Πάρτε στις αποσκευές σας τα καλύτερα από τα προϊόντα της χώρας για να τα προσφέρετε δώρα σ’ εκείνον τον άνθρωπο: λίγο βάλσαμο, λίγο μέλι, αρώματα, λάβδανο, φιστίκια και μύγδαλα. 12 Πάρτε μαζί σας και διπλάσια χρήματα: πάρτε δηλαδή κι εκείνα που είχαν βάλει στο άνοιγμα των σάκων σας· ίσως έγινε κάποιο λάθος. 13 Πάρτε και τον αδερφό σας και σηκωθείτε να πάτε πίσω σ’ εκείνον τον άνθρωπο. 14 Κι ο παντοδύναμος Θεός ας κάνει ώστε ο άνθρωπος αυτός να σας σπλαχνιστεί και ν’ αφήσει να ξανάρθει μαζί σας ο άλλος αδερφός σας και ο Βενιαμίν. Και εγώ, αν πρέπει να στερηθώ τα παιδιά μου, ας τα στερηθώ».

15 Εκείνοι πήραν τα δώρα, πήραν μαζί τους και διπλάσια χρήματα και το Βενιαμίν, και ξεκίνησαν να κατεβούν στην Αίγυπτο. Εκεί παρουσιάστηκαν στον Ιωσήφ. 16 Όταν ο Ιωσήφ είδε ότι είχαν μαζί τους το Βενιαμίν, είπε στον προϊστάμενο του σπιτιού του: «Οδήγησε αυτούς τους ανθρώπους στο σπίτι, σφάξε κάτι και ετοίμασε, γιατί θα φάνε μαζί μου το μεσημέρι». 17 Εκείνος έκανε όπως τον διέταξε ο Ιωσήφ, κι οδήγησε τους ανθρώπους στο σπίτι του. 18 Αυτοί φοβήθηκαν που τους οδήγησαν στο σπίτι του Ιωσήφ, και είπαν: «Το χρήμα που βρέθηκε την πρώτη φορά στα σακιά μας είναι η αιτία που μας έφεραν εδώ. Θέλουν να μας συκοφαντήσουν και να μας επιτεθούν για να μας πάρουν τα γαϊδούρια, και εμάς να μας πάρουν δούλους».

19 Τότε πλησίασαν τον προϊστάμενο του σπιτιού του Ιωσήφ και του ’πιασαν κουβέντα στην είσοδο του σπιτιού: 20 «Παρακαλούμε, κύριε», του έλεγαν, «εμείς έχουμε έρθει κι άλλη φορά για ν’ αγοράσουμε τρόφιμα. 21 Όταν όμως φτάσαμε στον τόπο που θα διανυκτερεύαμε και ανοίξαμε τα σακιά μας, ο καθένας μας βρήκε τα χρήματά του στο άνοιγμα του σακιού του. Τα χρήματά μας ακριβώς. Και τα φέραμε πάλι μαζί μας. 22 Φέραμε ακόμα κι άλλα χρήματα για ν’ αγοράσουμε τρόφιμα. Δεν ξέρουμε ποιος είχε βάλει τα χρήματά μας στα σακιά μας». 23 Εκείνος τους είπε: «Ησυχάστε και μη φοβόσαστε. Ο Θεός σας κι ο Θεός του πατέρα σας αυτός έβαλε το θησαυρό στα σακιά σας. Το χρήμα σας έφτασε στα χέρια μου». Και τους έφερε το Συμεών. 24 Ο άνθρωπος τους έφερε μέσα στο σπίτι του Ιωσήφ και τους έδωσε νερό να πλύνουν τα πόδια τους καθώς και τροφή για τα γαϊδούρια τους. 25 Εκείνοι ετοίμασαν τα δώρα τους ώσπου να έρθει ο Ιωσήφ το μεσημέρι, γιατί τους είχαν πει ότι θα έτρωγαν εκεί μαζί του.

26 Όταν ο Ιωσήφ γύρισε στο σπίτι, τού πρόσφεραν τα δώρα που τα είχαν φέρει μαζί τους, μέσα στο σπίτι, και τον προσκύνησαν ως τη γη. 27 Αυτός τους ρώτησε για την υγεία τους και ύστερα τους είπε: «Είναι καλά ο γέροντας πατέρας σας, που μου ’χετε μιλήσει γι’ αυτόν; Ζει ακόμη;» 28 Αυτοί απάντησαν: «Καλά είναι ο δούλος σου ο πατέρας μας. Ζει ακόμη». Κι έσκυψαν και προσκύνησαν.

29 Όταν ο Ιωσήφ είδε το Βενιαμίν, τον αδερφό του από την ίδια μάνα, ρώτησε: «Αυτός είναι ο αδερφός σας ο μικρότερος που μου λέγατε; Ο Θεός να σε ευλογεί παιδί μου», του είπε. 30 Ύστερα έφυγε βιαστικά, γιατί άρχισε να δακρύζει· είχε συγκινηθεί βαθιά που είδε τον αδερφό του και ήθελε να κλάψει. Μπήκε στο ιδιαίτερο δωμάτιό του κι εκεί έκλαψε. 31 Έπειτα έπλυνε το πρόσωπό του, βγήκε απ’ το δωμάτιο και προσπαθώντας να συγκρατηθεί πρόσταξε: «Φέρτε το φαγητό».

32 Έφεραν το φαγητό, χωριστά σ’ αυτόν και χωριστά στους Αιγύπτιους, που έτρωγαν μαζί του. Δεν επιτρεπόταν στους Αιγύπτιους να τρώνε μαζί με τους Εβραίους· ήταν γι’ αυτούς βδελυρό. 33 Τ’ αδέρφια του Ιωσήφ κάθισαν απέναντί του κατά σειρά ηλικίας, από τον μεγαλύτερο ως τον μικρότερο. Και έκπληκτοι κοίταζαν ο ένας τον άλλο. 34 Ο Ιωσήφ διέταξε να τους προσφέρουν από τα φαγητά που είχε στο δικό του τραπέζι. Και η μερίδα του Βενιαμίν ήταν πέντε φορές μεγαλύτερη από όλων των άλλων. Ήπιαν μαζί του και μέθυσαν.

11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds: 12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight: 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man: 14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin.
