1 Η Γοθολία, μητέρα του βασιλιά Οχοζία, όταν είδε ότι ο γιος της ήταν νεκρός, διέταξε να εξοντώσουν όλους τους απογόνους της βασιλικής οικογένειας. 2 Αλλά η Ιεωσεβά, κόρη του βασιλιά Ιωράμ και αδερφή του Οχοζία, άρπαξε κρυφά το γιο του αδερφού της, τον Ιωάς, ανάμεσα από τους γιους του βασιλιά που επρόκειτο να θανατωθούν, και τον έκρυψε μαζί με την παραμάνα του σ’ ένα υπνοδωμάτιο του ναού.*Κατά το Β΄ Χρ 22:11 η Ιεωσεβά ήταν γυναίκα του ιερέα Ιεωϊαδά. Έτσι εξηγείται πώς μπόρεσε και έκρυψε τον ανηψιό της στα υπνοδωμάτια των ιερέων. Έτσι τον γλίτωσε από τη Γοθολία. 3 Ο Ιωάς έμεινε κρυμμένος μαζί με την παραμάνα του στο ναό του Κυρίου έξι χρόνια. Στο μεταξύ βασίλευε στη χώρα η Γοθολία.

4 Τον έβδομο χρόνο, ο ιερέας Ιεωϊαδά κάλεσε στο ναό του Κυρίου τους εκατόνταρχους των Καριτών*Καριτών. Στρατιώτες που κατάγονταν από τη Μικρά Ασία. Το τάγμα αυτό αποτελούσε τη φρουρά του ναού και των ανακτόρων. και τους άλλους φρουρούς του ναού κι έκανε συμφωνία μαζί τους: Τους όρκισε μέσα στο ναό του Κυρίου και τους έδειξε το γιο του βασιλιά, 5 με τις ακόλουθες οδηγίες: «Να τι θα κάνετε:» τους είπε. «Ένα τάγμα από σας αναλαμβάνει υπηρεσία το ερχόμενο Σάββατο. Κανονικά, το ένα τρίτο φυλάει σκοπιά στο ανάκτορο του βασιλιά, 6 το άλλο τρίτο φυλάει την πύλη Σουρ,*πύλη Σουρ. Η θέση αυτής της πύλης είναι άγνωστη. και το άλλο τρίτο την πύλη πίσω από τους φρουρούς. 7 Τα δύο άλλα τάγματα, που δεν είναι σε υπηρεσία το ερχόμενο Σάββατο, θα έρθουν να φυλάξουν το ναό του Κυρίου, όπου βρίσκεται ο νεαρός βασιλιάς. 8 Θα περιστοιχίζετε οπλισμένοι το βασιλιά κι όποιος σας πλησιάζει, θα θανατώνεται. Θα συνοδεύετε το βασιλιά, όπου κι αν πάει».

9 Οι εκατόνταρχοι έκαναν όπως ακριβώς τους διέταξε ο Ιεωϊαδά: Συγκέντρωσαν καθένας τους άντρες του που επρόκειτο να αναλάβουν τη φρουρά εκείνο το Σάββατο κι αυτούς που επρόκειτο να παραδώσουν τη φρουρά την ίδια μέρα, και παρουσιάστηκαν όλοι στον ιερέα. 10 Εκείνος παρέδωσε στους εκατόνταρχους τις λόγχες και τις ασπίδες που ανήκαν στο βασιλιά Δαβίδ και βρίσκονταν στο ναό του Κυρίου. 11 Οι φρουροί παρατάχθηκαν καθένας με τα όπλα του στο χέρι σε ημικύκλιο, που ξεκινούσε από τη δεξιά πλευρά του ναού και κατέληγε στην αριστερή· περνούσε μπροστά από το θυσιαστήριο και μπροστά από το ναό, γύρω από το βασιλιά. 12 Τότε ο Ιεωϊαδά έφερε έξω το γιο του βασιλιά και του φόρεσε το στέμμα, του έδωσε το έγγραφο της διαθήκης*το έγγραφο της διαθήκης. Άλλες μετ. έχουν «το μαρτύριον» ή «τον νόμο». Πρόκειται για αντίγραφο του νόμου του Μωυσή (Εξ 25:21) που έπρεπε να αποτελεί το σταθερό οδηγό του βασιλιά (Δτ 17:18-20). και τον ανακήρυξε βασιλιά· τον έχρισαν με λάδι και όλοι χειροκροτούσαν φωνάζοντας: «Ζήτω ο βασιλιάς!»

13 Όταν άκουσε η Γοθολία το θόρυβο της φρουράς και του λαού, ανακατεύτηκε με το πλήθος και ήρθε στο ναό του Κυρίου. 14 Εκεί είδε το νεαρό βασιλιά να στέκεται πλάι στο στύλο του ναού, σύμφωνα με το έθιμο· γύρω του στέκονταν οι αξιωματικοί και οι σαλπιγκτές, κι όλος ο λαός πανηγύριζε και σάλπιζε με σάλπιγγες. Τότε η Γοθολία έσκισε τα φορέματά της*έσκισε τα φορέματά της. Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29. και φώναξε: «Προδοσία! Προδοσία!»

15 Ο ιερέας Ιεωϊαδά έδωσε διαταγή στους εκατόνταρχους που διοικούσαν τους στρατιώτες της φρουράς να την βγάλουν έξω από τις γραμμές των φρουρών. «Κι αν κανείς την ακολουθήσει», τους είπε, «θανατώστε τον κι αυτόν» –δεν ήθελε να σκοτώσουν τη Γοθολία μέσα στο ναό του Κυρίου. 16 Τη συνέλαβαν, λοιπόν, τη στιγμή που έφτανε στα ανάκτορα από την πύλη των Αλόγων,*πύλη των Αλόγων. Πιθανώς από την πύλη αυτή επικοινωνούσε η αυλή των ανακτόρων μ’ εκείνην του ναού. και τη θανάτωσαν επί τόπου.

17 Ο Ιεωϊαδά μεσολάβησε ανάμεσα στον Κύριο από τη μια μεριά, στο βασιλιά και το λαό, από την άλλη, να συνομολογηθεί μια συμφωνία, ότι ο λαός θα ανήκει στον Κύριο. Έκανε επίσης συμφωνία ανάμεσα στο βασιλιά και στο λαό του. 18 Τότε το πλήθος κατευθύνθηκε στο ναό του Βάαλ και τον γκρέμισαν εντελώς· κατέστρεψαν τα θυσιαστήριά του και τα είδωλά του και θανάτωσαν τον Ματθάν, ιερέα του Βάαλ, εκεί μπροστά στα θυσιαστήρια.

Έπειτα ο Ιεωϊαδά διόρισε φρουρούς στο ναό του Κυρίου. 19 Συγκέντρωσε τους εκατόνταρχους, τους Καρίτες,*Βλ. υποσ. εις στ 4. τους υπόλοιπους φρουρούς του ναού, και το λαό και οδήγησαν το βασιλιά από το ναό του Κυρίου μέσα από την πύλη των φρουρών στα ανάκτορα. Κι όταν ο Ιωάς κάθισε στο βασιλικό θρόνο, 20 όλος ο λαός της χώρας ξέσπασε σε πανηγυρισμούς. Έτσι, μετά τη θανάτωση της Γοθολίας μπροστά στα ανάκτορα, η πόλη βρήκε πάλι την ησυχία της.

4 And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the LORD, and shewed them the king’s son. 5 And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house; 6 And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.*11.6 that…: or, from breaking up 7 And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the LORD about the king.*11.7 parts: or, companies: Heb. hands 8 And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in. 9 And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David’s spears and shields, that were in the temple of the LORD. 11 And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.*11.11 corner: Heb. shoulder 12 And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.*11.12 God…: Heb. 13 And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the LORD. 14 And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets: and Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, Treason. 15 But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD. 16 And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house: and there was she slain.

17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD’s people; between the king also and the people. 18 And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the LORD.*11.18 officers: Heb. offices 19 And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings. 20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house. 21 Seven years old was Jehoash when he began to reign.
