1 Μια μέρα, τα μέλη της ομάδας των προφητών είπαν στον Ελισαίο: «Αυτός ο τόπος που συγκεντρωνόμαστε εδώ μαζί σου είναι μικρός για όλους εμάς. 2 Ας πάμε στις όχθες του Ιορδάνη να βρούμε καθένας μας από ένα δοκάρι και να φτιάξουμε ένα σπίτι, για να μαζευόμαστε όλοι εκεί». Εκείνος τους είπε: «Πηγαίνετε». 3 Ένας όμως απ’ αυτούς του είπε: «Κάνε μας τη χάρη, σε παρακαλώ, κι έλα μαζί με τους δούλους σου». 4 Κι ο Ελισαίος απάντησε: «Σύμφωνοι. Έρχομαι».

Κατέβηκαν, λοιπόν, στις όχθες του Ιορδάνη κι έκοβαν ξύλα. 5 Ενώ όμως ένας έκοβε, το σίδερο του τσεκουριού του ξέφυγε κι έπεσε στο νερό. Τότε αυτός φώναξε «Αχ, κύριέ μου και το είχα δανειστεί!» 6 «Πού έπεσε;» τον ρώτησε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού. Κι εκείνος του έδειξε το μέρος. Τότε ο Ελισαίος έκοψε ένα κομμάτι ξύλο και το έριξε στο ίδιο σημείο, κι έκανε το σίδερο να επιπλεύσει. 7 Μετά είπε στον άνθρωπο: «Πιάσ’ το». Εκείνος άπλωσε το χέρι του και το πήρε.

8 Την εποχή που ο βασιλιάς των Συρίων ήταν σε πόλεμο με τον Ισραήλ, συσκέφθηκε με τους αξιωματούχους του κι ύστερα αποφάσισε: «Σ’ αυτόν και σ’ εκείνο τον τόπο θα στρατοπεδεύσω». 9 Ο άνθρωπος του Θεού, όμως, έστειλε ειδοποίηση στο βασιλιά του Ισραήλ: «Πρόσεξε», του έλεγε, «να μην περάσεις από ’κείνο τον τόπο, γιατί εκεί έχουν στήσει ενέδρα οι Σύριοι». 10 Έτσι ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ είχε τη δυνατότητα να στείλει στρατιώτες να επιτηρούν τον τόπο που του υπέδειξε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού. Αυτό επαναλήφθηκε πολλές φορές. Ο Ελισαίος ειδοποιούσε το βασιλιά κι εκείνος έπαιρνε τις προφυλάξεις του.

11 Ο βασιλιάς των Συρίων θορυβήθηκε απ’ αυτή την κατάσταση. Συγκάλεσε, λοιπόν, τους αξιωματικούς του και τους είπε: «Μπορείτε να μου πείτε ποιος από σας είναι με το μέρος του βασιλιά του Ισραήλ;» 12 Ένας απ’ αυτούς, όμως, του είπε: «Κανείς δεν είναι, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά. Αλλά ο προφήτης Ελισαίος, που είναι στον Ισραήλ, αυτός φανερώνει στο βασιλιά τους ακόμα κι αυτά που εσύ συζητάς μέσα στο υπνοδωμάτιό σου». 13 Τότε ο βασιλιάς διέταξε: «Πηγαίνετε και ψάξτε πού είν’ αυτός, για να στείλω να τον συλλάβω».

Τον ειδοποίησαν, λοιπόν, ότι είναι στη Δωθάν. 14 Ο βασιλιάς έστειλε εκεί άμαξες, ιππικό και μεγάλη στρατιωτική δύναμη, οι οποίοι ήρθαν νύχτα και περικύκλωσαν την πόλη. 15 Την άλλη μέρα, νωρίς το πρωί, όταν ο υπηρέτης του ανθρώπου του Θεού σηκώθηκε και βγήκε έξω, είδε την πόλη περικυκλωμένη από στρατεύματα με άλογα και άμαξες. «Αχ, κύριέ μου», είπε στον Ελισαίο, «τι θα κάνουμε τώρα;» 16 Εκείνος του απάντησε: «Μη φοβάσαι! Αυτοί που είναι μαζί μ’ εμάς, είναι περισσότεροι από αυτούς που είναι μαζί μ’ εκείνους». 17 Μετά ο Ελισαίος προσευχήθηκε μ’ αυτά τα λόγια: «Κύριε, άνοιξε, σε παρακαλώ, τα μάτια του να δει». Ο Κύριος άνοιξε τα μάτια του υπηρέτη και είδε το βουνό γεμάτο με άλογα και πύρινες άμαξες γύρω από τον Ελισαίο.

18 Όταν οι Σύριοι άρχισαν να κινούνται εναντίον του, ο Ελισαίος προσευχήθηκε μ’ αυτά τα λόγια: «Κύριε, τύφλωσε όλους αυτούς τους στρατιώτες». Κι ο Κύριος τους τύφλωσε, όπως το ζήτησε ο Ελισαίος. 19 Τότε ο Ελισαίος είπε στους στρατιώτες: «Δεν είναι αυτός ο δρόμος, ούτε αυτή η πόλη· ακολουθήστε με και θα σας φέρω στον άνθρωπο που ζητάτε». Και τους έφερε στην Σαμάρεια. 20 Μόλις όμως έφτασε στη Σαμάρεια, είπε ο Ελισαίος: «Κύριε, άνοιξε τα μάτια τους, ώστε να δουν». Και ο Κύριος άνοιξε τα μάτια τους και είδαν ότι βρίσκονταν μέσα στη Σαμάρεια.

21 Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ, μόλις τους είδε, είπε στον Ελισαίο: «Να τους θανατώσω, πατέρα μου; Να τους θανατώσω;» 22 «Να μην τους θανατώσεις!» απάντησε εκείνος. «Κανονικά δεν μπορείς να θανατώσεις αιχμαλώτους πολέμου. Βάλε, καλύτερα, μπροστά τους ψωμί και νερό να φάνε και να πιουν και μετά να γυρίσουν στον κύριό τους».

23 Οργάνωσε, λοιπόν, γι’ αυτούς μεγάλο συμπόσιο, όπου έφαγαν και ήπιαν. Έπειτα τους άφησε ελεύθερους και πήγαν στον κύριό τους. Από τότε σταμάτησαν οι Σύριοι τις επιδρομές στη χώρα του Ισραήλ.

24 Μετά απ’ αυτά τα γεγονότα, ο βασιλιάς των Συρίων Βεν-Αδάδ συγκέντρωσε όλο το στρατό του και πήγε και πολιόρκησε τη Σαμάρεια. 25 Εξαιτίας αυτής της πολιορκίας έπεσε μεγάλη πείνα στη Σαμάρεια, ώστε ένα κεφάλι γαϊδουριού να πουληθεί για ογδόντα ασημένιους σίκλους και μισή λίτρα κοπριάς περιστεριών*κοπριάς περιστεριών. Τη χρησιμοποιούσαν επίσης για φαγώσιμο. για πέντε ασημένιους σίκλους.

26 Μια μέρα που ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ περνούσε πάνω από το τείχος, μια γυναίκα τού φώναξε: «Βοήθεια, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά!» 27 Εκείνος της απάντησε: «Αν δεν σε βοηθήσει ο Κύριος, πώς να σε βοηθήσω εγώ; Με στάρι από το αλώνι ή με κρασί από το πατητήρι;» 28 Έπειτα τη ρώτησε ο βασιλιάς: «Τι σου συμβαίνει;» Εκείνη απάντησε: «Αυτή η γυναίκα μού είπε: "δώσε το γιο σου να τον φάμε σήμερα κι αύριο θα φάμε το δικό μου γιο". 29 Έτσι βράσαμε το γιο μου και τον φάγαμε. Όταν όμως την άλλη μέρα τής είπα να δώσει το γιο της να τον φάμε, αυτή τον έκρυψε».

30,31 Όταν άκουσε ο βασιλιάς τα λόγια της γυναίκας, έσκισε τα ρούχα του*Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29. και είπε: «Το ίδιο και χειρότερο κακό να μου κάνει ο Θεός, αν το κεφάλι του Ελισαίου, γιου του Σαφάτ, μείνει σήμερα στη θέση του». Και καθώς ο βασιλιάς περνούσε από το τείχος, ο λαός είδε ότι από μέσα κατάσαρκα φορούσε πένθιμο ρούχο.

32 Στο μεταξύ ο Ελισαίος καθόταν στο σπίτι του, και οι πρεσβύτεροι κάθονταν κι αυτοί μαζί του. Ο βασιλιάς τού έστειλε έναν άνθρωπο, προτού πάει ο ίδιος. Πριν όμως φτάσει ο αγγελιοφόρος, ο Ελισαίος είπε στους πρεσβυτέρους: «Κοιτάξτε· αυτός ο δολοφόνος έστειλε να μου πάρει το κεφάλι. Προσέξτε: μόλις έρθει ο αγγελιοφόρος, κλείστε την πόρτα και σπρώξτε τον έξω μαζί με την πόρτα. Ξοπίσω του ακούγονται τα βήματα του κυρίου του που ακολουθεί!»

33 Εκεί που ο Ελισαίος μιλούσε ακόμα μαζί τους, έφτασε ο βασιλιάς*ο βασιλιάς. Το πιθανότερο. Το εβρ. έχει «ο αγγελιοφόρος». Οι δύο όροι στα εβρ. είναι σχεδόν ταυτόσημοι. και του είπε: «Αφού όλο αυτό το κακό προέρχεται από τον Κύριο, γιατί να ελπίζω ακόμη σ’ αυτόν;»

And he answered, Go ye. 3 And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go. 4 So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood. 5 But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.*6.5 axe head: Heb. iron 6 And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim. 7 Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

8 Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.*6.8 camp: or, encamping 9 And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down. 10 And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice. 11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? 12 And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.*6.12 None: Heb. 13 And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. 14 Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.*6.14 great: Heb. heavy 15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?*6.15 the servant: or, the minister 16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 18 And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

19 And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.*6.19 follow…: Heb. come ye after me 20 And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. 21 And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them? 22 And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master. 23 And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

24 And it came to pass after this, that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria. 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver. 26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king. 27 And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?*6.27 If…: or, Let not the LORD save thee 28 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow. 29 So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.*6.29 next: Heb. other

30 And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh. 31 Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day. 32 But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him? 33 And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
