1 Ο Αχαάβ είχε εβδομήντα απογόνους που ζούσαν στη Σαμάρεια. Ο Ιηού έστειλε γράμματα στους άρχοντες της πόλης,*της πόλης, (δηλ. της Σαμάρειας) σύμφωνα με ορισμένες αρχαίες μεταφρ. Το εβρ. έχει «της Ιζρεέλ». στους πρεσβυτέρους και σ’ εκείνους που είχαν τη φροντίδα των παιδιών του Αχαάβ, και τους έλεγε: 2 «Όλοι εσείς έχετε αναλάβει τη φροντίδα των παιδιών του κυρίου σας κι έχετε στη διάθεσή σας άρματα, άλογα, όπλα και οχυρωμένες πόλεις. Μόλις, λοιπόν, λάβετε αυτή την επιστολή, 3 διαλέξτε τον καλύτερο και συνετότερο από τους απογόνους του κυρίου σας, ανακηρύξτε τον βασιλιά στη θέση του πατέρα του και πολεμήστε για την οικογένεια του κυρίου σας».

4 Αυτοί όμως φοβήθηκαν πάρα πολύ και είπαν μεταξύ τους: «Εδώ δύο βασιλιάδες και δεν μπόρεσαν ν’ αντισταθούν στον Ιηού, πώς θ’ αντισταθούμε εμείς;» 5 Αμέσως ο αυλάρχης και ο δήμαρχος της πόλης, οι πρεσβύτεροι και οι παιδονόμοι, έστειλαν μήνυμα στον Ιηού και του έλεγαν: «Εμείς είμαστε δούλοι σου και ό,τι μας πεις θα κάνουμε. Κανέναν δε θα ορίσουμε βασιλιά· κάνε ό,τι νομίζεις εσύ σωστό».

6 Ο Ιηού τότε τους έγραψε και δεύτερο γράμμα: «Αν είστε μαζί μου», τους έλεγε, «και είστε πρόθυμοι να με υπακούτε, τότε κόψτε τα κεφάλια όλων των απογόνων του κυρίου σας και φέρτε τα σ’ εμένα στην Ιζρεέλ, αύριο τέτοια ώρα». Οι εβδομήντα απόγονοι του βασιλιά έμεναν μαζί με τους άρχοντες της πόλης, οι οποίοι και είχαν αναλάβει την ανατροφή τους. 7 Μόλις έλαβαν κι αυτό το γράμμα, έσφαξαν όλους τους απογόνους του βασιλιά, έβαλαν τα κεφάλια τους μέσα σε καλάθια και τα έστειλαν στον Ιηού, στην Ιζρεέλ.

8 Όταν ήρθε ο αγγελιοφόρος κι ανάγγειλε στο βασιλιά ότι είχαν φέρει τα κεφάλια των απογόνων του Αχαάβ, τότε ο Ιηού διέταξε να τα βάλουν σε δύο σωρούς, κοντά στην είσοδο της πύλης ως το πρωί. 9 Το πρωί βγήκε ο Ιηού και στάθηκε στην πύλη και είπε στο λαό: «Όλοι εσείς είστε αθώοι! Εγώ συνωμότησα εναντίον του κυρίου μου, του βασιλιά Ιωράμ, και τον σκότωσα· αλλά αυτούς ποιος τους σκότωσε; 10 Μάθετε, λοιπόν, ότι κανένας από τους λόγους του Κυρίου εναντίον των απογόνων του Αχαάβ δε θα μείνει ανεκπλήρωτος. Ο Κύριος εκπλήρωσε όλα όσα είχε πει με το δούλο του τον Ηλία». 11 Τότε ο Ιηού σκότωσε όλους όσοι είχαν απομείνει από την οικογένεια του Αχαάβ στην Ιζρεέλ, τους άρχοντές του, τους εμπίστους του και τους ιερείς του. Δε γλίτωσε κανένας.

12 Έπειτα ο Ιηού ξεκίνησε να πάει στη Σαμάρεια. Ενώ βρισκόταν στο δρόμο προς τη Βαιθ-Ακάδ, 13 συνάντησε τους συγγενείς του Οχοζία, βασιλιά του Ιούδα, και τους ρώτησε: «Ποιοι είστε εσείς;» Εκείνοι απάντησαν: «Είμαστε συγγενείς του Οχοζία, και κατεβαίνουμε να χαιρετίσουμε τους συγγενείς του βασιλιά και τους γιους της βασιλομήτορος». 14 Τότε ο Ιηού διέταξε: «Πιάστε τους ζωντανούς». Τους συνέλαβαν όλους και τους έσφαξαν στο λάκκο της Βαιθ-Ακάδ, σαράντα δύο άτομα. Δε γλίτωσε κανένας.

15 Όταν έφυγαν από ’κει, ο Ιηού συνάντησε τον Ιωναδάβ, γιο του Ρηχάβ,*Για τον Ιωναδάβ και τους απογόνους του, τους Ρηχαβίτες, βλ. Ιερ κεφ. 35. που ερχόταν για να τον συναντήσει. Ο Ιηού τον χαιρέτησε και του είπε: «Μου έχεις εμπιστοσύνη όπως σου έχω εγώ;» Ο Ιωναδάβ είπε: «Ναι». Τότε ο Ιηού απάντησε: «Αν είναι έτσι, δώσε μου το χέρι σου». Και τον ανέβασε στην άμαξά του, μαζί του. 16 «Έλα μαζί μου», του είπε, «και θα δεις το ζήλο μου για τον Κύριο».

17 Μόλις έφτασαν στη Σαμάρεια, ο Ιηού θανάτωσε όλους όσοι είχαν απομείνει από τους απογόνους του Αχαάβ στη Σαμάρεια. Τους εξολόθρευσε, σύμφωνα με το λόγο που ο Κύριος είχε ανακοινώσει στον προφήτη Ηλία.

18 Ο Ιηού συγκέντρωσε όλο το λαό της Σαμάρειας και τους είπε: «Ο Αχαάβ λάτρεψε το Βάαλ σε μικρό βαθμό· ο Ιηού θα τον λατρέψει πολύ περισσότερο! 19 Συγκεντρώστε μου εδώ όλους τους προφήτες του Βάαλ, τους λατρευτές του και τους ιερείς του. Κανείς να μη λείψει, γιατί θέλω να προσφέρω πολύ μεγάλη θυσία στο Βάαλ· όποιος λείψει, θα πεθάνει». Βέβαια, ο Ιηού το έκανε αυτό με πονηριά, για να εξοντώσει τους πιστούς του Βάαλ. 20 Είπε ακόμα ο Ιηού: «Προκηρύξτε πανηγυρική συγκέντρωση προς τιμήν του Βάαλ». Έτσι κι έκαναν. 21 Έτσι ο Ιηού έστειλε σ’ όλο το βασίλειο του Ισραήλ και σύναξε τους πιστούς του Βάαλ. Δεν έμεινε κανείς που να μην πάει. Μπήκαν όλοι στο ναό του Βάαλ, κι ο ναός γέμισε από τη μια άκρη ως την άλλη.

22 Τότε πρόσταξε τον ιματιοφύλακα: «Βγάλε στολές για όλους τους λατρευτές του Βάαλ». Αυτός έβγαλε στολές για όλους. 23 Μπήκε, λοιπόν, ο Ιηού μαζί με τον Ιωναδάβ, γιο του Ρηχάβ, μέσα στο ναό και είπε στους πιστούς του Βάαλ: «Κοιτάξτε δίπλα σας και βεβαιωθείτε ότι δεν είναι εδώ κανένας από τους πιστούς του Κυρίου, παρά μόνον οι πιστοί του Βάαλ».

24 Έπειτα ο Ιηού κι ο Ιωναδάβ πλησίασαν να προσφέρουν θυσίες και ολοκαυτώματα. Ο Ιηού όμως, είχε βάλει έξω ογδόντα άντρες και τους είχε πει: «Σας βάζω εδώ να επιβλέπετε όλους αυτούς τους ανθρώπους. Όποιος από σας αφήσει να ξεφύγει έστω κι ένας ζωντανός θα το πληρώσει με τη ζωή του». 25 Αφού πρόσφερε ολοκαύτωμα, ο Ιηού πρόσταξε τους φρουρούς και τους υπασπιστές του: «Πηγαίνετε τώρα μέσα και σκοτώστε τους όλους. Να μην ξεφύγει κανείς!» Τότε εκείνοι τους κατέσφαξαν και πέταξαν τα πτώματά τους έξω από το ναό του Βάαλ. Μετά μπήκαν στο εσωτερικό δωμάτιο του ναού, 26 έβγαλαν έξω την ξύλινη λατρευτική στήλη και την έκαψαν. 27 Γκρέμισαν επίσης την πέτρινη λατρευτική στήλη του Βάαλ και κατέστρεψαν το ναό· τον μετέτρεψαν σε δημόσιο αποχωρητήριο, κι έτσι λειτουργεί μέχρι σήμερα.

28 Έτσι ο Ιηού ξερίζωσε τη λατρεία του Βάαλ από τον Ισραήλ. 29 Παρ’ όλα αυτά, ο Ιηού δεν απαρνήθηκε τις αμαρτίες του Ιεροβοάμ, γιου του Ναβάτ, ο οποίος είχε παρασύρει τον Ισραήλ να αμαρτήσει, όταν λάτρεψε τα χρυσά μοσχάρια που έστησε στη Βαιθήλ και στη Δαν.

30 Τότε ο Κύριος είπε στον Ιηού: «Επειδή έπραξες αυτό που εγώ θεωρώ σωστό κι εκπλήρωσες όλες τις επιθυμίες μου εναντίον των απογόνων του Αχαάβ, οι απόγονοί σου, θα σε διαδέχονται στο θρόνο του Ισραήλ ως την τέταρτη γενιά». 31 Ο Ιηού, όμως, δε φρόντισε να εφαρμόσει με όλη την καρδιά του το νόμο του Κυρίου, του Θεού του Ισραήλ, και δεν απαρνήθηκε τις αμαρτίες του Ιεροβοάμ, ο οποίος είχε παρασύρει τον Ισραήλ να αμαρτήσει.

32 Εκείνη την εποχή, ο Κύριος άρχισε να αφαιρεί εδάφη από το βασίλειο του Ισραήλ. Ο Αζαήλ, βασιλιάς της Συρίας, νίκησε τους Ισραηλίτες παντού στη χώρα τους. 33 Χάθηκαν όλες οι περιοχές ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη και νότια ως την πόλη Αροήρ, πάνω από τον ποταμό Αρνών, γνωστές ως χώρες της Γαλαάδ και της Βασάν, τις οποίες κατείχαν οι φυλές Ρουβήν, Γαδ και Μανασσή.

34 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιηού, η δράση του και τα ανδραγαθήματά του, είναι όλα καταχωρισμένα στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ. 35 Ο Ιηού πέθανε κι ενταφιάστηκε στη Σαμάρεια. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του ο Ιωάχαζ. 36 Ο Ιηού βασίλεψε στον Ισραήλ, στη Σαμάρεια, είκοσι οκτώ χρόνια.

1 And Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up Ahab’s children, saying,*10.1 them…: Heb. nourishers 2 Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master’s sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fenced city also, and armour; 3 Look even out the best and meetest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house. 4 But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand? 5 And he that was over the house, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and the bringers up of the children, sent to Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt bid us; we will not make any king: do thou that which is good in thine eyes. 6 Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to Jezreel by to morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.*10.6 mine: Heb. for me 7 And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons, and slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to Jezreel.

8 And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning. 9 And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him: but who slew all these? 10 Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spake concerning the house of Ahab: for the LORD hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.*10.10 by: Heb. by the hand of 11 So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.*10.11 kinsfolks: or, acquaintance

15 And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. 18 And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much. 19 Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal. 20 And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it.*10.20 Proclaim: Heb. Sanctify 21 And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that came not. And he brought them forth vestments. 23 And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of Baal only. 24 And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him. 25 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. 29 Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Beth-el, and that were in Dan. 30 And the LORD said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel. 31 But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.*10.31 took…: Heb. observed not
