1 Ο Ιωάς*Σε ορισμένες μετ. οι στ. 1-22 του παρόντος κεφ. αριθμούνται ως 11:21–12:21. έγινε βασιλιάς σε ηλικία επτά ετών, 2 το έβδομο έτος της βασιλείας του Ιηού στον Ισραήλ και βασίλεψε σαράντα χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Σιβιά και καταγόταν από τη Βέερ-Σεβά. 3 Ο Ιωάς ενεργούσε σύμφωνα με τη θέληση του Κυρίου όλα τα χρόνια του, όσο τον καθοδηγούσε ο ιερέας Ιεωϊαδά. 4 Ωστόσο, οι ιεροί τόποι δεν καταργήθηκαν. Ο λαός συνέχιζε να προσφέρει εκεί θυσίες ζώων και θυμιάματα.

5 Μια μέρα ο Ιωάς είπε στους ιερείς: «Όλο το χρήμα που προσφέρεται στο ναό του Κυρίου, είτε αυτό αποτελεί ατομική φορολογική υποχρέωση είτε αυτοπροαίρετη συνεισφορά, 6 θα πρέπει να το παίρνετε εσείς, καθένας σας από κείνους που εξυπηρετεί στο ναό,*καθένας... ναό. Άλλη απόδοση: «καθένας από τους γνωστούς του» (περί του αντιθέτου βλ. Λευ κεφ. 3). και θα το διαθέτετε για να κάνετε επισκευές στο ναό, όπου χρειάζεται».

7 Αλλά το εικοστό τρίτο έτος της βασιλείας του Ιωάς οι ιερείς δεν είχαν κάνει ακόμα τις επισκευές του ναού. 8 Γι’ αυτό ο βασιλιάς κάλεσε τον ιερέα Ιεωϊαδά και τους άλλους ιερείς και τους είπε: «Γιατί δε φροντίσατε να γίνουν οι επισκευές του ναού; Από ’δω και πέρα δε θα παίρνετε εσείς τα χρήματα απ’ αυτούς που εξυπηρετείτε,*απ’ αυτούς που εξυπηρετείτε. Βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 6. αλλά θα τα βάζουν οι ίδιοι κατά μέρος για να διατεθούν για τις επισκευές του ναού». 9 Έτσι οι ιερείς συμφώνησαν να μην παίρνουν πια οι ίδιοι χρήματα από το λαό ούτε να ασχολούνται με τις επισκευές του ναού.

10 Ο Ιεωϊαδά πήρε ένα κιβώτιο, άνοιξε μια τρύπα στο σκέπασμά του και το έβαλε πλάι στο στύλο, δεξιά από την είσοδο του ναού και οι φρουροί της πύλης έβαζαν μέσα σ’ αυτό όλα τα χρήματα που προσφέρονταν στο ναό του Κυρίου. 11 Όταν έβλεπαν ότι γέμιζε το κιβώτιο, ο γραμματέας του βασιλιά κι ο αρχιερέας έρχονταν και μετρούσαν τα χρήματα και τα έβαζαν σε σακιά. 12 Έπειτα έδιναν τα μετρημένα χρήματα στους επιστάτες και στους επόπτες του έργου κι εκείνοι πλήρωναν τους εργάτες του ναού: τους ξυλουργούς, τους οικοδόμους 13 τους μαραγκούς και τους μαρμαράδες για να αγοράζουν ξύλα και πέτρες από τα λατομεία ή ό,τι άλλο χρειαζόταν για τις επισκευές του ναού. 14 Αλλά με τα χρήματα αυτά δεν κατασκευάστηκαν για το ναό του Κυρίου ασημένιες λεκάνες, λυχνοψάλιδα, θυμιατήρια, σάλπιγγες ή άλλα σκεύη, χρυσά ή αργυρά. 15 Δίνονταν αποκλειστικά σ’ εκείνους που εκτελούσαν το έργο, και αυτοί τα διέθεταν για τις επισκευές του ναού. 16 Εξάλλου δεν ζητούσαν λογαριασμό από τους ανθρώπους στους οποίους έδιναν τα χρήματα για να πληρώνουν τους εργάτες, γιατί τα διαχειρίζονταν τίμια.

17 Τα χρήματα που προσφέρονταν αντί για θυσία εξιλέωσης και αντί για θυσία επανόρθωσης, δεν έμπαιναν στο ναό του Κυρίου, αλλά ανήκαν στους ιερείς.

18 Την εποχή εκείνη ήρθε ο Αζαήλ, βασιλιάς των Συρίων, και πολέμησε εναντίον της Γαθ και την κυρίευσε. Μετά αποφάσισε να πολεμήσει και εναντίον της Ιερουσαλήμ. 19 Τότε ο βασιλιάς Ιωάς πήρε όλα τα αφιερώματα των προγόνων του, βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα, Ιωσαφάτ, Ιωράμ και Οχοζία, καθώς και τα δικά του, και όλο το χρυσό, που βρισκόταν στα θησαυροφυλάκια του ναού του Κυρίου και στα ανάκτορα, και τα έστειλε στον Αζαήλ. Έτσι ο Αζαήλ έφυγε από την Ιερουσαλήμ.

20 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιωάς και η δράση του είναι όλα καταχωρισμένα στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα. 21,22 Οι αξιωματούχοι του συνωμότησαν εναντίον του. Δυο απ’ αυτούς, ο Ιωζαβάδ γιος του Σιμεάθ και ο Ιωζαβάδ γιος του Σωμήρ, τον δολοφόνησαν στη Βαιθ-Μιλλώ, που βρίσκεται στο δρόμο που κατεβαίνει προς τη Σιλλά. Τον ενταφίασαν μαζί με τους προγόνους του στην Πόλη Δαβίδ. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του Αμασίας.*Για την αρίθμηση των στ. βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 1.

1 In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign; and forty years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba. 2 And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him. 3 But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

17 Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem. 18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.*12.18 went…: Heb. went up
