1 Ο Μανασσής ήταν δώδεκα ετών όταν έγινε βασιλιάς και βασίλεψε πενήντα πέντε χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ· η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Εφσιβά. 2 Ο Μανασσής έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο, τηρώντας τα βδελυρά έθιμα των εθνών εκείνων, που ο Κύριος τα είχε διώξει από τη χώρα τους για να κατοικήσουν οι Ισραηλίτες. 3 Έθεσε πάλι σε λειτουργία τους ιερούς τόπους που τους είχε καταστρέψει ο πατέρας του ο Εζεκίας· κατασκεύασε θυσιαστήρια για το Βάαλ· έστησε μια ξύλινη λατρευτική στήλη, όπως είχε κάνει ο Αχαάβ, ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ· και πρόσφερε λατρεία στ’ αστέρια του ουρανού και τα προσκύνησε. 4 Επίσης έχτισε ειδωλολατρικά θυσιαστήρια μέσα στο ναό του Κυρίου στην Ιερουσαλήμ, για τον οποίο ο Κύριος είχε πει: «Εκεί θα λατρεύεται το όνομά μου». 5 Έχτισε θυσιαστήρια για τ’ αστέρια του ουρανού στις δύο αυλές του ναού του Κυρίου. 6 Πρόσφερε το γιο του ολοκαύτωμα, ασκούσε μαντεία και μαγεία, προσέλαβε στην υπηρεσία του νεκρομάντεις και μάγους. Έκανε πολλά, με τα οποία δυσαρέστησε τον Κύριο και προκάλεσε την οργή του. 7 Επίσης ο Μανασσής κατασκεύασε ένα ξόανο της Ασερά και το έστησε μέσα στο ναό, για τον οποίον ο Κύριος είχε πει στο Δαβίδ και στο γιο του το Σολομώντα: «Στο ναό αυτόν και στην Ιερουσαλήμ, την πόλη που διάλεξα μέσα απ’ όλες τις φυλές του Ισραήλ, θα λατρεύεται το όνομά μου για πάντα. 8 Και αν οι Ισραηλίτες προσέχουν να κάνουν ακριβώς όλα όσα τους διέταξα, τηρώντας όλο το νόμο που τους έδωσε ο δούλος μου ο Μωυσής, δε θα τους υποχρεώσω πια να περιπλανιούνται έξω από τη χώρα που έδωσα στους προγόνους τους». 9 Αυτοί όμως δεν υπάκουσαν, κι ο Μανασσής τους παρέσυρε και έκαναν χειρότερα απ’ ό,τι τα έθνη εκείνα, που ο Κύριος τα είχε διώξει από τη χώρα τους για να κατοικήσουν οι Ισραηλίτες.

10 Τότε ο Κύριος έστειλε με τους δούλους του, τους προφήτες, αυτό το μήνυμα: 11 «Ο Μανασσής, βασιλιάς του Ιούδα, έπραξε όλες αυτές τις βδελυρές πράξεις κι έκανε πολύ φοβερότερα πράγματα από κείνα που είχαν κάνει στο παρελθόν οι Αμορραίοι· επίσης έγινε αιτία για το λαό του Ιούδα να αμαρτήσει με τα είδωλά του. 12 Γι’ αυτό εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέω: Θα προξενήσω τέτοια συμφορά στην Ιερουσαλήμ και στον Ιούδα, ώστε όποιος τ’ ακούει, να του έρχεται ζάλη. 13 Θ’ απλώσω πάνω στην Ιερουσαλήμ το σχοινί με το οποίο μέτρησα τη Σαμάρεια, το μέτρο που μ’ αυτό μετρούσα την οικογένεια του Αχαάβ.*Θ’ απλώσω... Αχαάβ. Εκφράσεις που υπονοούν τη θανάτωση των κατοίκων της Ιερουσαλήμ. Για την έννοια της εικόνας βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Σαμ 8:2. Θα σκουπίσω την Ιερουσαλήμ από τους κατοίκους της, όπως σκουπίζουν το πιάτο κι ύστερα το γυρίζουν ανάποδα. 14 Θα εγκαταλείψω όσους θα έχουν επιζήσει από το λαό μου και θα τους παραδώσω στην εξουσία των εχθρών τους, οι οποίοι θα τους λαφυραγωγήσουν και θα τους απογυμνώσουν. 15 Επειδή έπραξαν ασταμάτητα το κακό ενώπιόν μου και με εξοργίζουν από την ημέρα που οι πρόγονοί τους βγήκαν από την Αίγυπτο, μέχρι σήμερα».

16 Ο βασιλιάς Μανασσής παρέσυρε στην αμαρτία του το λαό του Ιούδα, εξωθώντας τον να πράττει το κακό ενώπιον του Κυρίου. Κι επιπλέον σκότωσε τόσους αθώους, ώστε γέμισε την Ιερουσαλήμ με αίμα από τη μία άκρη ως την άλλη.*Πιθανώς υπονοούνται οι ανθρωποθυσίες που προσφέρονταν από το Μανασσή (βλ. στ 6).

17 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Μανασσή είναι καταχωρισμένη στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα. Εκεί αναφέρεται όλη η δράση του και η αμαρτία που έπραξε. 18 Ο Μανασσής πέθανε κι ενταφιάστηκε στον κήπο του ανακτόρου του, που ονομάζεται και «κήπος του Ουζζά». Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του ο Αμών.

19 Ο Αμών ήταν είκοσι δύο ετών όταν έγινε βασιλιάς, και βασίλεψε δύο χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Μεσουλλεμέθ και ήταν κόρη του Χαρούς, από την Ιοτεβά. 20 Ο Αμών έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο, όπως είχε κάνει κι ο πατέρας του ο Μανασσής. 21 Βάδισε στ’ αχνάρια του: Πρόσφερε λατρεία στα είδωλα που είχε προσφέρει κι εκείνος και τα προσκύνησε. 22 Εγκατέλειψε τον Κύριο, το Θεό των προγόνων του· δε συμπεριφέρθηκε όπως ήθελε εκείνος.

23 Τελικά, οι αξιωματούχοι του συνωμότησαν εναντίον του και τον θανάτωσαν μέσα στο παλάτι. 24 Ο λαός όμως της χώρας σκότωσε τους συνωμότες κι έκανε βασιλιά στη θέση του Αμών το γιο του τον Ιωσία.

25 Όλη η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Αμών είναι καταχωρισμένη στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα. 26 Τον έθαψαν στον τάφο του, στον «κήπο του Ουζζά». Στη θέση του έγινε βασιλιάς ο Ιωσίας, ο γιος του.

1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hephzi-bah. 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. 3 For he built up again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made a grove, as did Ahab king of Israel; and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them. 4 And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, In Jerusalem will I put my name. 5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. 6 And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. 7 And he set a graven image of the grove that he had made in the house, of which the LORD said to David, and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever: 8 Neither will I make the feet of Israel move any more out of the land which I gave their fathers; only if they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them. 9 But they hearkened not: and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.

10 And the LORD spake by his servants the prophets, saying, 11 Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols: 12 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle. 13 And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down.*21.13 wiping…: Heb. he wipeth and turneth it upon the face thereof 14 And I will forsake the remnant of mine inheritance, and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies; 15 Because they have done that which was evil in my sight, and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even unto this day. 16 Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.*21.16 from…: Heb. from mouth to mouth

17 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin that he sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 18 And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.

19 Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah. 20 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh did. 21 And he walked in all the way that his father walked in, and served the idols that his father served, and worshipped them: 22 And he forsook the LORD God of his fathers, and walked not in the way of the LORD.
