1 Εκείνη την εποχή ο βασιλιάς Εζεκίας αρρώστησε τόσο βαριά, που κινδύνευε να πεθάνει. Τότε τον επισκέφθηκε ο προφήτης Ησαΐας, γιος του Αμώς, και του είπε: «Άκου τι λέει ο Κύριος: Τακτοποίησε τις υποθέσεις του σπιτιού σου, γιατί δε θα ζήσεις για πολύ ακόμη. Θα πεθάνεις».

2 Ο Εζεκίας γύρισε τότε το πρόσωπό του στον τοίχο και προσευχήθηκε στον Κύριο: 3 «Κύριε», είπε, «θυμήσου, σε παρακαλώ, πώς έζησα ενώπιόν σου με πιστότητα και με ευθύτητα καρδιάς, κι έπραξα ό,τι σου ήταν αρεστό!» Κι άρχισε να κλαίει γοερά.

4 Πριν βγει ο Ησαΐας από τη μεσαία αυλή, ήρθε σ’ αυτόν λόγος του Κυρίου: 5 «Γύρνα πίσω», του είπε ο Κύριος, «και πες στον Εζεκία, τον άρχοντα του λαού μου: "Ο Κύριος ο Θεός του Δαβίδ, του προγόνου σου, λέει: Άκουσα την προσευχή σου και είδα τα δάκρυά σου. Θα σε κάνω, λοιπόν, καλά· την τρίτη μέρα θ’ ανεβείς στο ναό του Κυρίου. 6 Θα σου δώσω άλλα δεκαπέντε χρόνια ζωής, και θα σας ελευθερώσω εσένα και την πόλη αυτή, από το βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας. Θα υπερασπιστώ αυτή την πόλη για να τιμήσω το όνομά μου και την υπόσχεση που έδωσα στο Δαβίδ, το δούλο μου"».

7 Μετά ο Ησαΐας είπε να ετοιμάσουν ένα κατάπλασμα από σύκα και να το βάλουν πάνω στην πληγή, για να γιατρευτεί ο βασιλιάς. 8 Ο Εζεκίας ρώτησε τον Ησαΐα: «Ποιο είναι το σημείο ότι ο Κύριος θα με κάνει καλά και ότι θ’ ανεβώ την τρίτη μέρα στο ναό του;» 9 Ο Ησαΐας απάντησε: «Τι θέλεις: να μετακινηθεί η σκιά δέκα σκαλοπάτια μπρος ή δέκα σκαλοπάτια πίσω;*Στο στίχο αυτό και στο στ. 11 το εβρ. δεν είναι σαφές. Αντί για «σκαλοπάτια» στα οποία «προχωρούσε» η σκιά, δυνατόν να υπήρχε ειδικός πίνακας με χαραγμένους «βαθμούς» που πάνω τους μετεκινείτο η σκιά και έδειχνε την ώρα. Αυτό θα είναι το σημείο από τον Κύριο, ότι θα εκπληρώσει την υπόσχεσή του». 10 Ο Εζεκίας απάντησε: «Είναι ευκολότερο να μετακινηθεί η σκιά δέκα σκαλοπάτια μπρος· καλύτερα ας μετακινηθεί δέκα σκαλοπάτια πίσω». 11 Τότε ο προφήτης Ησαΐας προσευχήθηκε στον Κύριο, κι ο Κύριος μετακίνησε τη σκιά δέκα σκαλοπάτια πίσω στη σκάλα που είχε κατασκευάσει ο βασιλιάς Άχαζ.

12 Την ίδια εποχή, ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Μερωδάχ-Βαλαδάν, γιος του Βαλαδάν, όταν έμαθε πως ο Εζεκίας ήταν άρρωστος, του έστειλε με πρεσβευτές του δώρα και μια επιστολή.*Το 703 π.Χ. ο Μερωδάχ-Βαλαδάν ελευθέρωσε τη Βαβυλώνα από την ασσυριακή επικυριαρχία. Η αποστολή πρέσβεων με επιστολή και δώρα, υποδήλωνε πιθανόν πρόθεσή του για σύναψη ιουδαιοβαβυλωνιακής συμμαχίας εναντίον των Ασσυρίων.13 Ο Εζεκίας δέχθηκε τους απεσταλμένους και τους έδειξε ό,τι βρισκόταν στα θησαυροφυλάκιά του, το ασήμι και το χρυσάφι, τα αρώματα και τα πολύτιμα μύρα· τους έδειξε και τα οπλοστάσιά του. Δεν άφησε τίποτα στο ανάκτορό του ή σ’ όλο του το βασίλειο, που να μην τους το δείξει.

14 Μετά απ’ αυτά ήρθε ο προφήτης Ησαΐας στο βασιλιά Εζεκία και τον ρώτησε: «Από πού σου ήρθαν αυτοί οι άνθρωποι και τι σου είπαν;» Ο Εζεκίας απάντησε: «Ήρθαν από μακρινή χώρα, από τη Βαβυλώνα, για να με δουν». 15 Ο προφήτης ξαναρώτησε: «Τι είδαν στο ανάκτορό σου;» Ο Εζεκίας απάντησε: «Ό,τι υπάρχει εκεί το είδαν· τίποτα δεν άφησα στα θησαυροφυλάκιά μου, που να μην τους το δείξω».

16 Τότε ο Ησαΐας είπε στον Εζεκία: «Άκου το λόγο του Κυρίου: 17 Έρχονται μέρες που ό,τι υπάρχει στο ανάκτορό σου και το αποταμίευσαν εκεί οι πρόγονοί σου μέχρι σήμερα, θα μεταφερθεί στη Βαβυλώνα· τίποτα δεν θα μείνει εδώ, λέει ο Κύριος. 18 Θα πάρουν ακόμα και μερικά από τα παιδιά σου, απ’ αυτά που θα ’χουν γεννηθεί από σένα, για να γίνουν ευνούχοι στ’ ανάκτορα του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας».

19 Ο Εζεκίας απάντησε στον Ησαΐα: «Ο λόγος που μου αναγγέλλει ο Κύριος είναι καλός». Και μέσα του σκεφτόταν: «Όσο ζω εγώ θα υπάρχει ειρήνη κι ασφάλεια. Τίποτα δεν πρόκειται να συμβεί».

20 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Εζεκία είναι καταχωρισμένη στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα. Εκεί αναφέρονται όλα τα κατορθώματά του, και πώς κατασκεύασε τη δεξαμενή και το υδραγωγείο και έφερε νερό στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 21 Όταν πέθανε ο Εζεκίας, τον διαδέχτηκε στο θρόνο ο γιος του ο Μανασσής.

1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.*20.1 Set…: Heb. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

8 And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day? 9 And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? 10 And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. 11 And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.*20.11 dial: Heb. degrees

12 At that time Berodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.*20.12 Berodach-baladan: or, Merodach-baladan 13 And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.*20.13 precious things: or, spicery*20.13 armour: or, jewels: Heb. vessels

14 Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon. 15 And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them. 16 And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD. 17 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD. 18 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. 19 Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?*20.19 Is it…: or, Shall there not be peace and truth, etc

20 And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made a pool, and a conduit, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 21 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
