1 Ο Ελισαίος είπε στη γυναίκα που της είχε αναστήσει το γιο: «Σήκω και φύγε μαζί με την οικογένειά σου, και πήγαινε οπουδήποτε στα ξένα, γιατί ο Κύριος θα στείλει στη χώρα αυτή πείνα, η οποία θα διαρκέσει εφτά χρόνια». 2 Πράγματι, η γυναίκα έκανε όπως της είπε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού: Πήγε με την οικογένειά της και ξενιτεύτηκε στη χώρα των Φιλισταίων για εφτά χρόνια. 3 Όταν πέρασαν τα εφτά χρόνια, γύρισε και κάποια μέρα παρουσιάστηκε στο βασιλιά, για να ζητήσει πίσω το σπίτι της και το χωράφι της.*Οι γείτονες είχαν τη δυνατότητα να καταπατήσουν μια ακίνητη περιουσία, όταν ο νόμιμος ιδιοκτήτης της απουσίαζε.

4 Την ίδια ώρα ο βασιλιάς συζητούσε με το Γεχαζί, τον υπηρέτη του ανθρώπου του Θεού, και του ζητούσε να του διηγηθεί για τα θαύματα που είχε κάνει ο Ελισαίος. 5 Ο Γεχαζί εξιστορούσε στο βασιλιά πώς ο Ελισαίος ανέστησε το γιο μιας γυναίκας. Τη στιγμή αυτή ακριβώς η μάνα εκείνου του παιδιού απευθύνθηκε στο βασιλιά για να του ζητήσει το σπίτι της και το χωράφι της. Τότε ο Γεχαζί είπε: «Κύριέ μου, βασιλιά, αυτή είναι η γυναίκα κι αυτός είναι ο γιος της, που ο Ελισαίος τον ανέστησε». 6 Ο βασιλιάς ρώτησε τη γυναίκα, κι αυτή του διηγήθηκε τα συμβάντα. Τότε ο βασιλιάς, έδωσε εντολή σ’ έναν αξιωματούχο σχετικά με τη γυναίκα: «Φρόντισε», του είπε, «ν’ αποδοθούν σ’ αυτή τη γυναίκα όλα όσα της ανήκουν και όλα τα εισοδήματα του χωραφιού της, από τη μέρα που εγκατέλειψε τη χώρα μέχρι τώρα».

7 Μιαν άλλη φορά ο Ελισαίος είχε πάει στη Δαμασκό και συνέβη ο βασιλιάς της Συρίας Βεν-Αδάδ να είναι άρρωστος. Τον πληροφόρησαν, λοιπόν, ότι είχε πάει εκεί ο άνθρωπος του Θεού. 8 Τότε ο βασιλιάς είπε στον Αζαήλ: «Πάρε μαζί σου ένα δώρο και πήγαινε να συναντήσεις τον άνθρωπο του Θεού και ζήτησέ του να ρωτήσει τον Κύριο αν θα γίνω καλά απ’ αυτή την αρρώστια».

9 Έτσι ο Αζαήλ, πήγε να συναντήσει τον Ελισαίο, φέρνοντας μαζί του σαράντα φορτώματα καμήλων, από τα καλύτερα προϊόντα της Δαμασκού. Πήγε και παρουσιάστηκε μπροστά του και του είπε: «Ο δούλος σου ο Βεν-Αδάδ, βασιλιάς των Συρίων, με έστειλε σ’ εσένα να σε ρωτήσω αν θα γίνει καλά απ’ την αρρώστια του».

10 Ο Ελισαίος του είπε: «Ο Κύριος μου φανέρωσε ότι το δίχως άλλο θα πεθάνει· εσύ όμως πήγαινε και πες του ότι σίγουρα θα γίνει καλά». 11 Μετά κάρφωσε το βλέμμα του πάνω στον Αζαήλ, και τον κοίταζε συνέχεια, ώσπου αυτός κοκκίνισε από ντροπή· κι ο άνθρωπος του Θεού άρχισε να κλαίει. 12 «Γιατί κλαις, κύριέ μου;» τον ρώτησε ο Αζαήλ. Κι ο Ελισαίος απάντησε: «Γιατί ξέρω πόσο κακό θα κάνεις εσύ στους Ισραηλίτες. Θα κατακάψεις τα οχυρά τους, θα κατασφάξεις τα παλικάρια τους, θα εξοντώσεις τα παιδιά τους και θα ξεκοιλιάσεις τις έγκυες γυναίκες τους». 13 Αλλά ο Αζαήλ είπε: «Και ποιος είμαι εγώ, ο τιποτένιος δούλος σου, για να κάνω τόσο μεγάλα πράγματα;» Τότε ο Ελισαίος του αποκρίθηκε: «Ο Κύριος μου φανέρωσε ότι εσύ θα γίνεις βασιλιάς των Συρίων».

14 Ο Αζαήλ έφυγε από τον Ελισαίο και πήγε στον κύριό του. Εκείνος τον ρώτησε: «Τι σου είπε ο Ελισαίος;» Κι αυτός απάντησε: «Μου είπε ότι οπωσδήποτε θα γίνεις καλά». 15 Την επόμενη όμως μέρα πήρε τα σκεπάσματά του βασιλιά, τα βούτηξε στο νερό και τα άπλωσε στο πρόσωπό του· κι ο βασιλιάς πέθανε. Στη θέση του έγινε ο ίδιος βασιλιάς της Συρίας.

16 Το πέμπτο έτος της βασιλείας του Ιωράμ, γιου του Αχαάβ, στον Ισραήλ, βασιλιάς στον Ιούδα έγινε ο Ιωράμ, γιος του Ιωσαφάτ, 17 σε ηλικία τριάντα δύο ετών. Βασίλεψε στην Ιερουσαλήμ οκτώ χρόνια 18 κι ακολούθησε το κακό παράδειγμα των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ· έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο, όπως άλλωστε είχε κάνει και η οικογένεια του Αχαάβ, αφού η γυναίκα του ήταν κόρη του Αχαάβ. 19 Ο Κύριος όμως δε θέλησε να καταστρέψει το λαό του Ιούδα, για χάρη του Δαβίδ, του δούλου του, σύμφωνα με την υπόσχεση που του είχε δώσει, ότι αυτός και οι απόγονοί του θα κατείχαν το θρόνο για πάντα.

20 Στις μέρες του Ιωράμ, αποσκίρτησαν οι Εδωμίτες από την κυριαρχία του βασιλείου του Ιούδα κι ανακήρυξαν δικό τους βασιλιά. 21 Τότε ο Ιωράμ πέρασε μαζί με όλες τις πολεμικές του άμαξες στη Σαΐρ, όπου περικυκλώθηκε από τους Εδωμίτες. Αλλά τη νύχτα, μαζί με τους αρχηγούς των αμαξών του, έσπασε τον κλοιό κι έτσι οι στρατιώτες του κατάφεραν να διαφύγουν στις σκηνές τους. 22 Πάντως οι Εδωμίτες χωρίστηκαν από τον Ιούδα και εξακολουθούν μέχρι σήμερα ν’ αποτελούν ανεξάρτητο βασίλειο. Την ίδια εποχή αποσκίρτησε και η Λιβνά.

23 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιωράμ και η δράση του είναι καταχωρισμένα στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα. 24 Ο Ιωράμ πέθανε και ενταφιάσθηκε μαζί με τους προγόνους του στην Πόλη Δαβίδ. Τον διαδέχτηκε στο θρόνο ο γιος του Οχοζίας.

25 Το δωδέκατο έτος της βασιλείας του Ιωράμ, γιου του Αχαάβ, στον Ισραήλ, βασιλιάς στον Ιούδα έγινε ο Οχοζίας, γιος του Ιωράμ, 26 σε ηλικία είκοσι δύο ετών και βασίλεψε ένα χρόνο στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Γοθολία, κι ήταν εγγονή του Αμρί, βασιλιά του Ισραήλ. 27 Ο Οχοζίας ακολούθησε κι αυτός το παράδειγμα της οικογένειας Αχαάβ· έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο, όπως άλλωστε και όλη η οικογένεια Αχαάβ, με την οποία ως γαμπρός είχε συνδεθεί.

28 Μαζί με τον Ιωράμ, γιο του Αχαάβ, πήγε στη Ραμώθ, στη Γαλαάδ, για να πολεμήσει εναντίον του Αζαήλ, βασιλιά των Συρίων. Οι Σύριοι όμως πλήγωσαν τον Ιωράμ στη μάχη, 29 κι αυτός γύρισε στην Ιζρεέλ για να θεραπευθεί από τα τραύματά του. Τότε ο Οχοζίας κατέβηκε στην Ιζρεέλ να τον επισκεφθεί που ήταν άρρωστος.

1 Then spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years. 2 And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. 3 And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land. 4 And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done. 5 And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life, cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life. 6 And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.*8.6 officer: or, eunuch

7 And Elisha came to Damascus; and Ben-hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The man of God is come hither. 8 And the king said unto Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the man of God, and enquire of the LORD by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease? 9 So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Ben-hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?*8.9 with…: Heb. in his hand 10 And Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover: howbeit the LORD hath shewed me that he shall surely die. 11 And he settled his countenance stedfastly, until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept.*8.11 stedfastly: Heb. and set it 12 And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child. 13 And Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria. 14 So he departed from Elisha, and came to his master; who said to him, What said Elisha to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest surely recover. 15 And it came to pass on the morrow, that he took a thick cloth, and dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and Hazael reigned in his stead.

20 In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves. 21 So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots with him: and he rose by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him about, and the captains of the chariots: and the people fled into their tents. 22 Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time. 23 And the rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 24 And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.*8.24 Ahaziah: also called, Azariah, and Jehoahaz

25 In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel did Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah begin to reign. 26 Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. 28 And he went with Joram the son of Ahab to the war against Hazael king of Syria in Ramoth-gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram. 29 And king Joram went back to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria.
