1 Το εικοστό τρίτο έτος της βασιλείας του Ιωάς, γιου του Οχοζία, στον Ιούδα, άρχισε να βασιλεύει στον Ισραήλ, στη Σαμάρεια, ο Ιωάχαζ, γιος του Ιηού. Αυτός βασίλεψε δεκαεφτά χρόνια 2 κι έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο· δεν έπαψε να επαναλαμβάνει τις αμαρτίες του Ιεροβοάμ, γιου του Ναβάτ, ο οποίος είχε παρασύρει τον Ισραήλ να αμαρτήσει. 3 Γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος ήταν πολύ οργισμένος εναντίον των Ισραηλιτών και τους παρέδινε συνεχώς στην εξουσία του Αζαήλ, βασιλιά των Συρίων, και στην εξουσία του γιου του, του Βεν-Αδάδ. 4 Ο Ιωάχαζ όμως επικαλέστηκε τον Κύριο κι εκείνος τον άκουσε. Είδε την καταπίεση που υφίστατο ο λαός Ισραήλ από το Σύριο βασιλιά 5 και τους έστειλε έναν ελευθερωτή, ο οποίος τους απάλλαξε από την κυριαρχία των Συρίων. Έτσι οι Ισραηλίτες μπορούσαν να ζουν στα σπίτια τους, όπως και προηγουμένως. 6 Ωστόσο κι αυτοί δεν αποκήρυξαν τις αμαρτίες της οικογένειας του Ιεροβοάμ, ο οποίος είχε παρασύρει τον Ισραήλ να αμαρτήσει, αλλά τις επανέλαβαν· έτσι διατηρήθηκε η ξύλινη λατρευτική στήλη στη Σαμάρεια.

7 Στον Ιωάχαζ δεν είχαν απομείνει από το στρατό περισσότεροι από πενήντα ιππείς, δέκα άρματα και δέκα χιλιάδες πεζοί. Ο βασιλιάς των Συρίων τους είχε εξοντώσει και τους είχε διασκορπίσει σαν το χώμα στο δρόμο.

8 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιωάχαζ, η δράση του και τα ανδραγαθήματά του είναι όλα καταχωρισμένα στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ. 9 Όταν πέθανε τον έθαψαν στη Σαμάρεια και τον διαδέχτηκε στο θρόνο ο γιος του ο Ιωάς.

10 Το τριακοστό έβδομο έτος της βασιλείας του Ιωάς στον Ιούδα, βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ στη Σαμάρεια έγινε ο Ιωάς, γιος του Ιωάχαζ. Αυτός βασίλεψε δεκαέξι χρόνια 11 κι έκανε ό,τι δυσαρεστούσε τον Κύριο. Δεν έπαψε να επαναλαμβάνει όλες τις αμαρτίες του Ιεροβοάμ, γιου του Ναβάτ, ο οποίος είχε παρασύρει τον Ισραήλ να αμαρτήσει.

12 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιωάς είναι καταχωρισμένη στο Βιβλίο των Χρονικών των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ. Εκεί αναφέρεται όλη η δράση του και η ανδρεία του με την οποία πολέμησε εναντίον του Αμασία, βασιλιά του Ιούδα. 13 Όταν ο Ιωάς πέθανε, ενταφιάστηκε στη Σαμάρεια μαζί με τους υπόλοιπους βασιλιάδες του Ισραήλ. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο Ιεροβοάμ.*Οι στ. 12-13 επαναλαμβάνονται σχεδόν κατά λέξη στο κεφ. 14:15-16, γιατί μέχρι το κεφ. 14:14 αναφέρονται γεγονότα στα οποία πρωταγωνιστεί ο Ιωάς, βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ. Ειδικότερα ο πόλεμος ανάμεσα στον Ιωάς και τον Αμασία (στ. 12) εξιστορείται λεπτομερώς στο κεφ. 14:8-14.

14 Όταν ο προφήτης Ελισαίος προσβλήθηκε από την αρρώστια από την οποία και πέθανε, ήρθε να τον επισκεφθεί ο Ιωάς, βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ. Ο Ιωάς έκλαιγε μπροστά στον Ελισαίο και του έλεγε: «Πατέρα μου, πατέρα μου! Εσύ είσαι το άρμα και ο αρματηλάτης του Ισραήλ!»

15,16 Τότε ο Ελισαίος του είπε: «Πάρε στο χέρι σου το τόξο σου και βέλη». Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ τα πήρε, κι ο προφήτης τού είπε: «Βάλε το χέρι σου πάνω στο τόξο». Ο βασιλιάς το έβαλε. Έπειτα ο Ελισαίος έβαλε τα χέρια του πάνω στα χέρια του βασιλιά 17 και του είπε: «Άνοιξε το ανατολικό παράθυρο». Το άνοιξε κι ο Ελισαίος είπε: «Τόξευσε». Και τόξευσε. Τότε ο Ελισαίος είπε: «Εσύ είσαι το βέλος της νίκης του Κυρίου εναντίον των Συρίων, γιατί εσύ θα πολεμήσεις εναντίον τους στην Αφέκ, ώσπου να τους εξοντώσεις».

18 Ύστερα είπε πάλι ο Ελισαίος: «Πάρε τα βέλη». Ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ τα πήρε κι ο προφήτης τού είπε: «Χτύπα πάνω στο έδαφος». Εκείνος χτύπησε τρεις φορές και σταμάτησε. 19 Τότε ο άνθρωπος του Θεού οργίσθηκε εναντίον του και του είπε: «Έπρεπε να χτυπήσεις πέντε κι έξι φορές! Τότε θα νικούσες ολοσχερώς τους Συρίους και θα τους εξόντωνες· τώρα όμως μόνο τρεις φορές θα τους νικήσεις».

20 Ο Ελισαίος πέθανε και τον έθαψαν.

Κάθε χρόνο, την άνοιξη, έμπαιναν στη χώρα Μωαβίτες επιδρομείς. 21 Κάποτε, εκεί που έθαβαν έναν άνθρωπο, είδαν ξαφνικά μία ομάδα επιδρομέων· τότε έριξαν βιαστικά το πτώμα μέσα στον τάφο του Ελισαίου κι έφυγαν. Μόλις όμως ήρθε σ’ επαφή με τα οστά του Ελισαίου ο νεκρός, ζωντάνεψε και στάθηκε στα πόδια του.

22 Ο βασιλιάς των Συρίων Αζαήλ καταδυνάστευε το λαό του Ισραήλ, όλο τον καιρό της βασιλείας του Ιωάχαζ. 23 Ο Κύριος όμως τους έδειξε την καλοσύνη του, τους σπλαχνίστηκε και τους βοήθησε, λόγω της διαθήκης του με τον Αβραάμ, τον Ισαάκ και τον Ιακώβ· δεν τους κατέστρεψε ούτε τους απέρριψε μέχρι σήμερα.

24 Όταν πέθανε ο Αζαήλ, τον διαδέχτηκε στο θρόνο ο γιος του ο Βεν-Αδάδ. 25 Ο Ιωάς, γιος του Ιωάχαζ, νίκησε τρεις φορές το Βεν-Αδάδ και ανέκτησε τις πόλεις του Ισραήλ, που εκείνος είχε κυριέψει στον πόλεμο με τον Ιωάχαζ, πατέρα του Ιωάς.

14 Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. 15 And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows. 16 And he said to the king of Israel, Put thine hand upon the bow. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed. 19 And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

20 And Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. 21 And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.*13.21 was…: Heb. went down

22 But Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. 23 And the LORD was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.*13.23 presence: Heb. face 24 So Hazael king of Syria died; and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead. 25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities, which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war.
