1 Έτσι, τη δέκατη μέρα του δέκατου μήνα, του ένατου έτους της βασιλείας του Σεδεκία, ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ ήρθε με όλο το στρατό του στην Ιερουσαλήμ· στρατοπέδευσε απέναντί της, και κατασκεύασε πολιορκητικό τείχος γύρω από την πόλη. 2 Η πολιορκία κράτησε ως το ενδέκατο έτος της βασιλείας του Σεδεκία, 3 οπότε έπεσε πολύ μεγάλη πείνα στην πόλη· δεν υπήρχε καθόλου τροφή για τους κατοίκους της.

Τότε, την ένατη μέρα του τέταρτου μήνα, 4 οι Βαβυλώνιοι έκαναν ένα άνοιγμα στο τείχος της πόλης. Τη νύχτα, ο βασιλιάς*Οι λέξεις ο βασιλιάς και τέταρτου (του στ. 4) δεν υπάρχουν στο εβρ., αλλά συνάγονται από τη συνέχεια της διήγησης και υπάρχουν στην παράλληλη διήγηση του Ιερεμία (52:6). και οι πολεμιστές του Ιούδα βγήκαν από το διάδρομο που ένωνε τα δύο τείχη, πέρασαν κοντά από το βασιλικό κήπο και πήραν το δρόμο προς την κοιλάδα του Ιορδάνη, παρ’ όλο που οι Βαβυλώνιοι είχαν περικυκλώσει την πόλη. 5 Αλλά ο βαβυλωνιακός στρατός καταδίωξε το βασιλιά και τον πρόφτασε στις πεδιάδες της Ιεριχώ· τότε όλοι οι στρατιώτες του τον εγκατέλειψαν και διασκορπίστηκαν. 6 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι συνέλαβαν το Σεδεκία και τον έφεραν στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας στη Ριβλά, κι εκείνος έβγαλε καταδικαστική απόφαση εναντίον του. 7 Έσφαξε τους γιους του μπροστά στα μάτια του· μετά τον τύφλωσαν, τον έδεσαν με αλυσίδες και τον πήραν στη Βαβυλώνα.

8 Την έβδομη μέρα του πέμπτου μήνα, το δέκατο ένατο έτος της βασιλείας του Ναβουχοδονόσορ, βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας, ήρθε στην Ιερουσαλήμ ο Νεβουζαραδάν, αρχηγός της σωματοφυλακής του. 9 Αυτός έβαλε φωτιά στο ναό του Κυρίου, στα ανάκτορα και σ’ όλα τα σπίτια της Ιερουσαλήμ, ιδιαίτερα στα αρχοντικά της πόλης. 10 Τα βαβυλωνιακά στρατεύματα που τον ακολουθούσαν γκρέμισαν τα τείχη της Ιερουσαλήμ. 11 Και έσυρε ο Νεβουζαραδάν στην αιχμαλωσία το υπόλοιπο του λαού, που είχε απομείνει στην πόλη, όλους όσοι είχαν αυτομολήσει προς το βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας. 12 Αλλά μερικούς από τους φτωχότερους της χώρας τούς άφησε πίσω για να καλλιεργούν τα αμπέλια και τα χωράφια.

13 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι έσπασαν τους χάλκινους στύλους του ναού του Κυρίου, τις βάσεις και τη χάλκινη λεκάνη, και μετέφεραν τον χαλκό τους στη Βαβυλώνα. 14 Επίσης πήραν τους λέβητες, τα φτυάρια, τα λυχνοψάλιδα, τα θυμιατήρια και όλα τα χάλκινα σκεύη που χρησίμευαν για τη λατρεία στο ναό. 15 Επίσης πήραν τις σχάρες και τις λεκάνες και γενικά ό,τι ήταν χρυσό ή ασημένιο –το πήραν για το χρυσάφι και το ασήμι. 16 Ήταν αδύνατο να ζυγιστεί ο χαλκός όλων αυτών των αντικειμένων, δηλαδή των δύο στύλων, της χάλκινης λεκάνης και των βάσεων, που τα είχε κατασκευάσει ο Σολομώντας για το ναό του Κυρίου. 17 Το ύψος του κάθε στύλου ήταν δεκαοχτώ πήχεις και στην κορυφή του υπήρχε ένα χάλκινο κιονόκρανο. Το ύψος του κιονόκρανου ήταν τρεις πήχεις και ήταν διακοσμημένο με δικτυωτό και ρόδια ολόγυρα, όλα από χαλκό. Οι δύο στύλοι και τα δικτυωτά ήταν πανομοιότυπα.

18 Ο αρχηγός της σωματοφυλακής συνέλαβε τον αρχιερέα Σεραΐα, το δεύτερο στην ιεραρχία ιερέα Σοφονία, και τους τρεις φρουρούς της πύλης του ναού. 19 Επίσης από την πόλη συνέλαβε έναν αξιωματούχο επικεφαλής των πολεμιστών και πέντε άντρες από τους προσωπικούς συμβούλους του βασιλιά, που βρίσκονταν στην Ιερουσαλήμ, το γραμματέα του αρχιστράτηγου, που ήταν υπεύθυνος για τη στρατολόγηση των αντρών, καθώς κι εξήντα άντρες από τους κατοίκους της πόλης. 20 Ο Νεβουζαραδάν τους έφερε στον βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας, στη Ριβλά. 21 Κι εκείνος έδωσε διαταγή και τους σκότωσαν εκεί στη Ριβλά, στη χώρα της Χαμάθ.*χώρα της Χαμάθ. Έτσι, ο λαός του Ιούδα οδηγήθηκε στην αιχμαλωσία, μακριά από τη χώρα του.

22 Ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ άφησε στη χώρα του Ιούδα ένα μέρος του πληθυσμού. Σ’ αυτούς διόρισε κυβερνήτη το Γεδαλία, γιο του Αχικάμ και εγγονό του Σαφάν. 23 Όταν οι αρχηγοί των στρατευμάτων που είχαν διαφύγει την αιχμαλωσία άκουσαν ότι ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας διόρισε κυβερνήτη το Γεδαλία, ήρθαν σ’ αυτόν μαζί με τους άντρες τους, στη Μισπά. Ήταν ο Ισμαήλ, γιος του Νεθανία, ο Ιωχανάν, γιος του Καρεάχ, ο Σεραΐας, γιος του Τανχουμέθ του Νετωφαθίτη και ο Ιααζανίας, γιος κάποιου Μααχαθίτη.

24 Ο Γεδαλίας ορκίστηκε μπροστά τους και μπροστά στους άντρες τους και τους είπε: «Μη φοβάστε από τους αξιωματούχους των Βαβυλωνίων· εγκατασταθείτε στη χώρα και υποταχθείτε στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας κι αυτό θα σας βγει σε καλό». 25 Αλλά τον έβδομο μήνα ήρθε ο Ισμαήλ, γιος του Νεθανία κι εγγονός του Ελισαμά, που καταγόνταν από τη βασιλική οικογένεια,*βασιλική οικογένεια. Ως μέλος της βασιλικής οικογένειας ο Ισμαήλ δεν επέτρεπε να γίνει άλλος κυβερνήτης. μαζί με δέκα άντρες, και θανάτωσαν το Γεδαλία, καθώς και τους άντρες του Ιούδα και τους Βαβυλώνιους που ήταν στο σπίτι του στη Μισπά. 26 Τότε όλος ο λαός, μικροί και μεγάλοι, και οι αρχηγοί των στρατευμάτων, ξεσηκώθηκαν κι έφυγαν για την Αίγυπτο, γιατί φοβόντουσαν τους Βαβυλώνιους.

27 Τριάντα εφτά χρόνια από την αιχμαλωσία του Ιωαχίν, βασιλιά του Ιούδα, έγινε βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας ο Ευΐλ-Μερωδάχ.*Ο Ευΐλ-Μερωδάχ έγινε βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας το 561 π.Χ. Και τον ίδιο χρόνο, την εικοστή έβδομη μέρα του δωδέκατου μήνα, έδωσε αμνηστία στον Ιωαχίν και τον έβγαλε από τη φυλακή. 28 Του φέρθηκε με ευμένεια και τον τίμησε περισσότερο από τους άλλους βασιλιάδες που ήταν μαζί του αιχμάλωτοι στη Βαβυλώνα. 29 Έτσι, του επιτράπηκε να βγάλει τα ρούχα της φυλακής και να συντρώγει με το βασιλιά το υπόλοιπο της ζωής του. 30 Επίσης, όσο ζούσε, του παρέχονταν κάθε μέρα από το βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας όλα τα απαραίτητα για τη συντήρησή του.

1 And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about. 2 And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. 3 And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.

4 And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain. 5 And the army of the Chaldees pursued after the king, and overtook him in the plains of Jericho: and all his army were scattered from him. 6 So they took the king, and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment upon him.*25.6 gave…: Heb. spake judgment with him 7 And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon.*25.7 put…: Heb. made blind

8 And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem:*25.8 captain…: or, chief marshal 9 And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man’s house burnt he with fire. 10 And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about. 11 Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon, with the remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away.*25.11 fugitives: Heb. fallen away 12 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen. 13 And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD, did the Chaldees break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon. 14 And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away. 15 And the firepans, and the bowls, and such things as were of gold, in gold, and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away. 16 The two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made for the house of the LORD; the brass of all these vessels was without weight.*25.16 one…: Heb. the one sea 17 The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates upon the chapiter round about, all of brass: and like unto these had the second pillar with wreathen work.

18 And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:*25.18 door: Heb. threshold 19 And out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the king’s presence, which were found in the city, and the principal scribe of the host, which mustered the people of the land, and threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the city:*25.19 officer: or, eunuch*25.19 were in…: Heb. saw the king’s face*25.19 principal…: or, scribe of the captain of the host 20 And Nebuzar-adan captain of the guard took these, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah: 21 And the king of Babylon smote them, and slew them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.

22 And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, ruler. 23 And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 24 And Gedaliah sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you. 25 But it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, came, and ten men with him, and smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews and the Chaldees that were with him at Mizpah.*25.25 royal: Heb. of the kingdom 26 And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees.

27 And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison; 28 And he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon;*25.28 kindly…: Heb. good things with him 29 And changed his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him all the days of his life. 30 And his allowance was a continual allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life.
