1 Οι Ισραηλίτες έφυγαν από ’κει και κατασκήνωσαν στις στέπες της Μωάβ, πέρα από τον Ιορδάνη, απέναντι από την Ιεριχώ. 2 Ο Βαλάκ, γιος του Σιππώρ, που εκείνη την εποχή ήταν βασιλιάς των Μωαβιτών, έμαθε αυτά που είχαν κάνει οι Ισραηλίτες στους Αμορραίους. 3 Φοβήθηκαν, λοιπόν, πολύ οι Μωαβίτες το λαό του Ισραήλ, που ήταν τόσο πολυάριθμος, 4 και είπαν στους αρχηγούς των Μαδιανιτών: «Τώρα το πλήθος αυτό θα καταστρέψει τα πάντα γύρω μας, όπως τα βόδια κατατρώνε το χορτάρι στα χωράφια».

5 Έτσι ο βασιλιάς Βαλάκ έστειλε αγγελιοφόρους στο Βαλαάμ, γιο του Βεώρ, στην Πεθόρ, κοντά στον Ευφράτη ποταμό, στη χώρα των Αμοβιτών,*στη χώρα των Αμοβιτών. Πιθανή εκδοχή της γραφής του εβρ. κειμένου, που σημαίνει κατά λ. «χώρα των γιων του λαού του». Άλλη δυνατή μετ.: «στη χώρα της καταγωγής του». με το ακόλουθο μήνυμα: «Ένας λαός που βγήκε από την Αίγυπτο, πλημμύρισε την περιοχή μας και έχει εγκατασταθεί απέναντί μου. 6 Έλα τώρα λοιπόν να καταραστείς για χάρη μου το λαό αυτό, γιατί είναι ισχυρότερος από μένα. Ίσως έτσι μπορέσω να τον νικήσω και να τον διώξω από τη χώρα. Εγώ ξέρω ότι όποιον εσύ ευλογείς είναι ευλογημένος και όποιον καταριέσαι είναι καταραμένος».

7 Ξεκίνησαν, λοιπόν οι αρχηγοί των Μωαβιτών και των Μαδιανιτών, έχοντας και την αμοιβή της μαντείας μαζί τους, και ήρθαν στο Βαλαάμ να του ανακοινώσουν το μήνυμα του Βαλάκ. 8 Ο Βαλαάμ τους είπε: «Μείνετε εδώ απόψε και θα σας απαντήσω ανάλογα με το τι θα μου πει ο Κύριος». Έτσι οι άρχοντες της Μωάβ έμειναν με το Βαλαάμ.

9 Τη νύχτα ο Θεός ήρθε στο Βαλαάμ και τον ρώτησε: «Ποιοι είναι αυτοί οι άνθρωποι που μένουν μαζί σου;» 10 Ο Βαλαάμ απάντησε: «Ο βασιλιάς της Μωάβ, ο Βαλάκ γιος του Σιππώρ, τούς έστειλε να μου πουν 11 ότι βγήκε ένας λαός από την Αίγυπτο και πλημμύρισε τη χώρα. "Έλα λοιπόν", μου είπε, "και δώσ’ τους την κατάρα σου. Ίσως έτσι μπορέσω και τους πολεμήσω και τους διώξω"». 12 Ο Θεός είπε στο Βαλαάμ: «Δε θα πας μαζί τους. Δε θα καταραστείς το λαό αυτό, γιατί είναι ευλογημένος».

13 Ο Βαλαάμ σηκώθηκε το πρωί και είπε στους άρχοντες του Βαλάκ: «Γυρίστε στη χώρα σας, γιατί ο Κύριος δε μου επιτρέπει να έρθω μαζί σας». 14 Έτσι, οι άρχοντες της Μωάβ σηκώθηκαν και γύρισαν πίσω στο Βαλάκ και του είπαν: «Ο Βαλαάμ αρνήθηκε να έρθει μαζί μας». 15 Τότε ο Βαλάκ ξανάστειλε άλλους άρχοντες, πιο επίσημους από τους προηγούμενους. 16 Αυτοί ήρθαν στο Βαλαάμ και του είπαν: «Ο Βαλάκ, γιος του Σιππώρ λέει: "Σε παρακαλώ, μην αρνηθείς να έρθεις σ’ εμένα. 17 Θα σε ανταμείψω γενναιόδωρα και ό,τι μου πεις θα το κάνω. Έλα, λοιπόν, να καταραστείς για χάρη μου αυτό το λαό"».

18 Αλλά ο Βαλαάμ αποκρίθηκε στους ανθρώπους του Βαλάκ: «Κι αν ακόμη ο Βαλάκ μού έδινε το σπίτι του γεμάτο ασήμι και χρυσάφι, εγώ δεν θα μπορούσα να παραβώ τη διαταγή του Κυρίου, του Θεού μου και να κάνω κάτι λιγότερο ή περισσότερο. 19 Μείνετε κι εσείς εδώ απόψε, και θα μάθω τι θα μου πει πάλι ο Κύριος».

20 Τη νύχτα ήρθε ο Θεός στο Βαλαάμ και του είπε: «Αφού αυτοί οι άντρες ήρθαν να σε καλέσουν, σήκω και πήγαινε μαζί τους. Αλλά θα κάνεις μόνο αυτό που θα σου λέω εγώ».

21 Ο Βαλαάμ σηκώθηκε το πρωί, σαμάρωσε το γαϊδουράκι του και πήγε μαζί με τους άρχοντες της Μωάβ. 22 Ο Θεός οργίστηκε που ο Βαλαάμ έφυγε, και καθώς ο ίδιος καθόταν πάνω στο ζώο του και τον συνόδευαν οι δυο του υπηρέτες, ο άγγελος του Κυρίου στάθηκε στο δρόμο για να τον εμποδίσει.

23 Όταν το υποζύγιο είδε τον άγγελο που στεκόταν εκεί με ένα κοφτερό σπαθί στο χέρι του, βγήκε απ’ το δρόμο και μπήκε στα χωράφια. Ο Βαλαάμ το χτύπησε για να το ξαναφέρει πίσω.

24 Τότε ο άγγελος στάθηκε σ’ ένα μονοπάτι ανάμεσα στ’ αμπέλια, που είχε τοίχο από τη μια μεριά και τοίχο από την άλλη. 25 Βλέποντας τον άγγελο, το ζώο στριμώχτηκε στον τοίχο και πίεσε το πόδι του Βαλαάμ πάνω στον τοίχο. Ο Βαλαάμ το χτύπησε και πάλι.

26 Ο άγγελος του Κυρίου πέρασε άλλη μια φορά μπροστά και στάθηκε σ’ ένα στενό πέρασμα όπου δεν υπήρχε διέξοδος ούτε από δεξιά, ούτε από αριστερά. 27 Το γαϊδουράκι είδε τον άγγελο του Κυρίου και γονάτισε κάτω από το Βαλαάμ. Αυτός τότε θύμωσε και άρχισε να το χτυπάει με το ραβδί.

28 Τότε ο Κύριος έκανε το ζώο να μιλήσει, και είπε στο Βαλαάμ: «Τι σου έκανα και με χτύπησες τρεις φορές ως τώρα;»

29 «Δε με λογαριάζεις καθόλου!» του αποκρίθηκε ο Βαλαάμ. «Μακάρι να είχα στο χέρι μου ένα σπαθί να σε σκότωνα τώρα».

30 Το γαϊδουράκι τού λέει: «Δεν είμαι εγώ το γαϊδούρι σου, που από πάντα καθόσουν πάνω μου; Σου συμπεριφέρθηκα ποτέ μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο;»

Εκείνος απάντησε: «Όχι».

31 Εκείνη τη στιγμή ο Κύριος άνοιξε τα μάτια του Βαλαάμ και είδε τον άγγελο που στεκόταν στο δρόμο με το κοφτερό σπαθί στο χέρι του. Γονάτισε τότε ο Βαλαάμ και προσκύνησε με το πρόσωπο στη γη. 32 Ο άγγελος του Κυρίου τού είπε: «Γιατί χτύπησες το γαϊδουράκι σου τρεις φορές; Βλέπεις ότι εγώ βγήκα να σε εμποδίσω, επειδή δεν μου αρέσει ο δρόμος που ’χεις πάρει. 33 Το ζώο με είδε κι άλλαξε δρόμο τρεις φορές. Αν δεν μου είχε ξεφύγει, θα σε είχα σκοτώσει κι εκείνο θα το είχα αφήσει να ζήσει».

34 Τότε ο Βαλαάμ απάντησε στον άγγελο: «Αμάρτησα! Δεν ήξερα ότι εσύ στεκόσουν στον δρόμο για να με σταματήσεις. Και τώρα, αν αυτό που κάνω δεν σου αρέσει, εγώ γυρίζω πίσω».

35 Ο άγγελος του Κυρίου όμως του είπε: «Πήγαινε μ’ αυτούς τους ανθρώπους, αλλά θα πεις μόνο ό,τι θα σου πω εγώ». Έτσι ο Βαλαάμ πήγε μαζί με τους άρχοντες του Βαλάκ.

36 Όταν άκουσε ο Βαλάκ ότι έρχεται ο Βαλαάμ, βγήκε να τον προϋπαντήσει στην Αρ-Μωάβ, πλάι στον ποταμό Αρνών, στα σύνορα της Μωάβ. 37 Ο Βαλάκ είπε στο Βαλαάμ: «Δεν έστειλα επειγόντως να σε καλέσω; Γιατί δεν ερχόσουν; Μήπως δεν έχω τη δυνατότητα να σε τιμήσω;» 38 Ο Βαλαάμ απάντησε στο Βαλάκ: «Να, λοιπόν, που ήρθα! Αλλά μήπως και τώρα μπορώ να πω τίποτε; Θα πω μόνο τα λόγια που θα βάλει στο στόμα μου ο Θεός». 39 Έτσι ο Βαλαάμ μαζί με το Βαλάκ πήγαν στην πόλη Κιριάθ-Ουζώθ. 40 Εκεί ο Βαλάκ έσφαξε βόδια και πρόβατα και τα πρόσφερε στον Βαλαάμ και στους άρχοντες που ήταν μαζί του.

41 Την άλλη μέρα πήρε ο Βαλάκ το Βαλαάμ και τον ανέβασε στη Βαμώθ-Βάαλ, απ’ όπου ο Βαλαάμ μπορούσε να δει ένα τμήμα του λαού του Ισραήλ.

1 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.

2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel. 4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:*22.5 face: Heb. eye 6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed. 7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak. 8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam. 9 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee? 10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying, 11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.*22.11 I shall…: Heb. I shall prevail in fighting against him 12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed. 13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you. 14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:*22.16 Let…: Heb. Be not thou hindered from, etc 17 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people. 18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more. 20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do. 21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. 23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way. 24 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side. 25 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again. 26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff. 28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? 29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee. 30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast. 37 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour? 38 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak. 39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath-huzoth.*22.39 Kirjath-huzoth: or, a city of streets 40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him. 41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
