1 Ο Βαλαάμ είπε στο Βαλάκ: «Χτίσε μου εδώ εφτά θυσιαστήρια και ετοίμασέ μου εφτά μοσχάρια κι εφτά κριάρια». 2 Ο Βαλάκ έκανε ό,τι του είπε ο Βαλαάμ, και θυσίασαν μαζί από ένα μοσχάρι κι ένα κριάρι σε κάθε θυσιαστήριο. 3 Μετά ο Βαλαάμ είπε στο Βαλάκ: «Εσύ μείνε κοντά στο ολοκαύτωμά σου κι εγώ θα κάνω έναν περίπατο, μήπως με συναντήσει ο Κύριος. Ό,τι μου φανερώσει θα σου το αναγγείλω».

Έτσι ο Βαλαάμ ανέβηκε μόνος στην κορυφή ενός λόφου. 4 Πράγματι, ο Θεός συνάντησε το Βαλαάμ κι εκείνος του είπε: «Έχω ετοιμάσει εφτά θυσιαστήρια και πρόσφερα από ένα μοσχάρι κι ένα κριάρι σε κάθε θυσιαστήριο». 5 Ο Κύριος τότε έδωσε χρησμό στο Βαλαάμ και τον έστειλε πίσω στο Βαλάκ να του τον διαβιβάσει. 6 Ο Βαλαάμ γύρισε στο Βαλάκ και τον βρήκε να στέκεται κοντά στο ολοκαύτωμά του μαζί με όλους τους άρχοντες της Μωάβ. 7 Ο Βαλαάμ τότε άρχισε να απαγγέλλει αυτόν το χρησμό:

«Απ’ την Αράμ με έφερε ο Βαλάκ,

ο βασιλιάς της Μωάβ,

απ’ τα βουνά της Ανατολής.

"Έλα", μού είπε,

"δώσ’ την κατάρα σου για χάρη μου στον Ιακώβ,

έλα κι αναθεμάτισε τον Ισραήλ".

8 Πώς να καταραστώ αυτούς,

που δεν τους καταριέται ο Θεός;

Πώς ν’ αναθεματίσω εκείνους,

που δεν τους αναθεματίζει ο Κύριος;

9 Τους βλέπω από τις κορφές των βράχων

απ’ τα ψηλώματα των λόφων τούς διακρίνω.

Είναι λαός που ζει μονάχος του

και που στα έθνη δεν ανήκει.

10 Ποιος μπορεί ν’ αριθμήσει τον Ιακώβ;

Ποιος να μετρήσει τον πολυάριθμο Ισραήλ;

Μακάρι κι εγώ σαν αυτούς τους δίκαιους να πεθάνω!

Το τέλος μου σαν το δικό τους να είναι!»

11 Τότε είπε ο Βαλάκ στο Βαλαάμ: «Τι μου κάνεις! Εγώ σε πήρα να καταραστείς τους εχθρούς μου, κι εσύ τους ευλόγησες». 12 Ο Βαλαάμ απάντησε: «Δεν έπρεπε να πω αυτό που έβαλε ο Κύριος στο στόμα μου;»

13 Τότε του είπε ο Βαλάκ: «Έλα τώρα μαζί μου σ’ ένα άλλο σημείο, από όπου θα μπορείς να βλέπεις μόνο ένα τμήμα τους, όχι όλους. Από ’κει να τους καταραστείς για χάρη μου». 14 Τον έφερε λοιπόν στα χωράφια Ζωφίμ, στην κορυφή Φασγά. Εκεί έχτισε πάλι εφτά θυσιαστήρια και θυσίασε από ένα μοσχάρι κι ένα κριάρι σε κάθε θυσιαστήριο. 15 Ο Βαλαάμ είπε στο Βαλάκ: «Εσύ μείνε εδώ κοντά στο ολοκαύτωμά σου, κι εγώ θα πάω να συναντήσω τον Κύριο πέρα εκεί».

16 Ο Κύριος συνάντησε το Βαλαάμ, του έδωσε χρησμό και τον έστειλε πίσω στον Βαλάκ να του τον διαβιβάσει. 17 Αυτός γύρισε στο Βαλάκ και τον βρήκε να στέκεται κοντά στο ολοκαύτωμά του μαζί με τους άρχοντες της Μωάβ. «Τι σου είπε ο Κύριος;» τον ρώτησε. 18 Τότε ο Βαλαάμ άρχισε να απαγγέλλει αυτόν το χρησμό:

«Σήκω, Βαλάκ και άκου·

πρόσεξέ με, γιε του Σιππώρ!

19 Ο Θεός δεν είν’ άνθρωπος να λέει ψέματα,

θνητός δεν είναι, για να αλλάζει γνώμη.

Όταν λέει κάτι, το κάνει κιόλας,

και όταν κάτι υπόσχεται,

το πραγματοποιεί.

20 Πήρα την εντολή να ευλογήσω·

ο Θεός ευλόγησε,

και δεν μπορώ ν’ ανακαλέσω εγώ.

21 Ανομία δεν βλέπει στον Ιακώβ,

δε βλέπει συμφορά στον Ισραήλ.

Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός τους, είναι μαζί τους,

κι αυτοί το διαλαλούν ότι είναι ο βασιλιάς τους.

22 Από την Αίγυπτο τους έβγαλε ο Θεός

για κείνους πολεμάει με δύναμη αγριόταυρου.

23 Μαγεία δεν ισχύει στον Ιακώβ ενάντια,

ούτε μαντεία ενάντια στον Ισραήλ·

τώρα είν’ ο καιρός να ειπωθεί:

"Δείτε τι έκανε ο Θεός για το λαό του Ισραήλ!"

24 Σαν λέαινα σηκώνεται αυτός ο λαός·

ορθώνεται σαν ύπουλο λιοντάρι.

Δεν ησυχάζει ως να καταβροχθίσει το κυνήγι του

κι ώσπου να πιει των πληγωμένων το αίμα».

25 Τότε είπε ο Βαλάκ στο Βαλαάμ: «Καλά, δεν τους καταριέσαι, αλλά τουλάχιστον μην τους ευλογείς!» 26 Ο Βαλαάμ τού απάντησε: «Δε σου είπα ότι θα κάνω εκείνο που θα μου πει ο Κύριος;»

27 Τότε είπε ο Βαλάκ στο Βαλαάμ: «Έλα να σε πάω σ’ ένα άλλο μέρος. Ίσως ο Θεός θελήσει να τους καταραστείς από ’κει για χάρη μου». 28 Τον έφερε, λοιπόν, στην κορυφή Φεγώρ, που βλέπει προς την έρημο. 29 Ο Βαλαάμ τού είπε: «Χτίσε μου εδώ εφτά θυσιαστήρια κι ετοίμασέ μου εφτά μοσχάρια και εφτά κριάρια». 30 Ο Βαλάκ έκανε όπως του είπε ο Βαλαάμ και θυσίασε από ένα μοσχάρι κι ένα κριάρι σε κάθε θυσιαστήριο.

1 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams. 2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram. 3 And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.*23.3 to an…: or, solitary 4 And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram. 5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak. 6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab. 7 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel. 8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied? 9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations. 10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!*23.10 me: Heb. my soul, or, my life 11 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether. 12 And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?

13 And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.

14 And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.*23.14 Pisgah: or, the hill 15 And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the Lord yonder. 16 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus. 17 And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the LORD spoken? 18 And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor: 19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? 20 Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it. 21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them. 22 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn. 23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!*23.23 against: or, in 24 Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.

25 And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all. 26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?

27 And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence. 28 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon. 29 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams. 30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.
