1 Κάποτε ο λαός άρχισε να παραπονιέται στον Κύριο για τα βάσανά του. Όταν ο Κύριος τους άκουσε, εξοργίστηκε κι έστειλε εναντίον τους φωτιά, η οποία έκαψε μια άκρη του στρατοπέδου. 2 Τότε ο λαός φώναξε στο Μωυσή για βοήθεια· εκείνος προσευχήθηκε στον Κύριο και η φωτιά έσβησε. 3 Τον τόπο εκείνο τον ονόμασαν Ταβερά (Πυρκαγιά)*Ταβερά. Κατά τους Ο΄: «Εμπυρισμός». γιατί άναψε ανάμεσά τους η φωτιά του Κυρίου.

4 Ανάμεσά τους βρίσκονταν και διάφοροι ξένοι, που εκλιπαρούσαν για κρέας· αλλά ακόμα και οι ίδιοι οι Ισραηλίτες άρχισαν να γκρινιάζουν και να λένε: «Ποιος θα μας δώσει να φάμε κρέας; 5 Θυμόμαστε τα ψάρια που τρώγαμε στην Αίγυπτο χωρίς να τα πληρώνουμε, τα αγγούρια, τα πεπόνια, τα πράσα, τα κρεμμύδια και τα σκόρδα. 6 Τώρα όμως έχουμε εξαντληθεί. Δεν υπάρχει τίποτε να φάμε, εκτός από τούτο ’δω το μάννα».

7 Το μάννα ήταν σαν σπόρος κορίαννου*κορίαννο. Είδος αρωματικού φυτού.. και το χρώμα του έμοιαζε με του βδέλλιου. 8 Ο λαός διασκορπιζόταν και το μάζευε, το άλεθε στις μυλόπετρες ή το κοπάνιζε στο γουδί, και το έβραζε στη χύτρα ή το έκανε πίτες· η γεύση του ήταν σαν της τηγανίτας. 9 Τη νύχτα, όταν έπεφτε η δροσιά στο στρατόπεδο, έπεφτε μαζί και το μάννα.

10 Ο Μωυσής άκουσε το λαό που γκρίνιαζαν καθώς στέκονταν κατά ομάδες μπροστά στις σκηνές τους, και λυπήθηκε γιατί ο Θεός είχε θυμώσει πολύ μαζί τους. 11 Είπε, λοιπόν, ο Μωυσής στον Κύριο: «Γιατί με ταλαιπωρείς, εμένα τον δούλο σου; Τόσο δυσαρεστημένος είσαι μαζί μου, και μου φόρτωσες το βάρος όλου αυτού του λαού; Γιατί; 12 Ούτε τον είχα εγώ στην κοιλιά μου ούτε εγώ τον γέννησα, για να μου λες να τον πάρω στην αγκαλιά μου, όπως παίρνει η παραμάνα το βρέφος, σ’ όλο το δρόμο ως τη χώρα, που ορκίστηκες να τη δώσεις στους προγόνους τους! 13 Πού να βρω εγώ κρέας, να δώσω σ’ όλον ετούτο το λαό; Όλο μου γκρινιάζουν και μου λένε να τους δώσω να φάνε κρέας. 14 Δεν μπορώ εγώ μόνος μου να βαστάξω όλον αυτό το λαό· είναι μεγάλο βάρος για μένα. 15 Αν είναι να με μεταχειρίζεσαι έτσι, κάνε μου τη χάρη και εξόντωσέ με τώρα αμέσως, για να μη βλέπω πια τη δυστυχία μου».

16 Τότε ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή: «Μάζεψέ μου εβδομήντα άντρες από τους γέροντες του Ισραήλ, που τους γνωρίζεις ότι είναι οι πρεσβύτεροι και επόπτες του λαού, κι οδήγησέ τους στη σκηνή του Μαρτυρίου να σταθούν εκεί μαζί σου. 17 Εγώ θα κατέβω εκεί και θα σου μιλήσω. Θα πάρω από το πνεύμα που έχω δώσει σ’ εσένα και θα δώσω σ’ αυτούς· έτσι θα σηκώνουν μαζί σου το βάρος του λαού, για να μην το σηκώνεις μόνος σου. 18 Τώρα πες στο λαό: "Εξαγνιστείτε για αύριο και θα φάτε κρέας. Ο Κύριος σας άκουσε που του γκρινιάζατε και λέγατε ποιος θα σας δώσει να φάτε κρέας, κι ότι ήσασταν καλά στην Αίγυπτο. Θα σας δώσει λοιπόν κρέας να φάτε. 19 Και θα το τρώτε όχι μία μέρα ούτε δύο, ούτε πέντε, ούτε δέκα, ούτε είκοσι μέρες. 20 Ολόκληρο μήνα θα τρώτε κρέας, ώσπου να σας βγει από τη μύτη και να το αηδιάσετε. Κι αυτό γιατί περιφρονήσατε τον Κύριο, που είναι ανάμεσά σας, και του παραπονεθήκατε που φύγατε από την Αίγυπτο"».

21 Ο Μωυσής είπε στον Κύριο: «Εξακόσιες χιλιάδες είναι οι οδοιπόροι που αποτελούν το λαό που οδηγώ, κι εσύ λες ότι θα τους δώσεις κρέας για να τρώνε ένα μήνα; 22 Όσα πρόβατα και βόδια να σφάξει κανείς, δε θα τους φτάσουν. Κι όλα τα ψάρια της θάλασσας να συγκεντρωθούν γι’ αυτούς, πάλι δε θα είναι αρκετά!»

23 Τότε ο Κύριος απάντησε στο Μωυσή: «Μήπως ελαττώθηκε η δύναμη του Θεού; Θα δεις αν θα εκπληρωθεί ο λόγος μου ή όχι».

24 Ο Μωυσής βγήκε από τη σκηνή και ανακοίνωσε στο λαό τα λόγια του Κυρίου. Συγκέντρωσε εβδομήντα άντρες από τους γέροντες του λαού και τους έβαλε να σταθούν γύρω από τη σκηνή. 25 Τότε ο Κύριος κατέβηκε μέσα στη νεφέλη και μίλησε στο Μωυσή. Πήρε από το πνεύμα που του είχε δώσει και έδωσε στους εβδομήντα πρεσβυτέρους. Μόλις ήρθε το πνεύμα πάνω τους, άρχισαν να προφητεύουν, αλλά δε συνέχισαν.

26 Δύο όμως από τους πρεσβυτέρους είχαν μείνει στο στρατόπεδο. Ο ένας λεγόταν Ελδάδ και ο άλλος Μεδάδ. Και ήρθε και σ’ εκείνους το πνεύμα, γιατί ήταν κι αυτοί από τους γραμμένους, αλλά δεν είχαν πάει στη σκηνή. Άρχισαν, λοιπόν, κι αυτοί να προφητεύουν στο στρατόπεδο. 27 Τότε έτρεξε ένας νέος και το ανάγγειλε στο Μωυσή: «Ο Ελδάδ και ο Μεδάδ προφητεύουν στο στρατόπεδο!» του είπε.

28 Τότε ο Ιησούς, γιος του Ναυή, που ήταν από νέος βοηθός του Μωυσή, πήρε το λόγο και είπε: «Κύριέ μου, Μωυσή, εμπόδισέ τους». 29 Αλλά ο Μωυσής του απάντησε: «Ζηλεύεις εσύ για λογαριασμό μου; Μακάρι να ’δινε ο Κύριος το Πνεύμα του σε όλο το λαό και να τους έκανε προφήτες!»

30 Μετά ο Μωυσής και οι πρεσβύτεροι του Ισραήλ, γύρισαν πίσω στο στρατόπεδο.

31 Στο μεταξύ, ο Κύριος σήκωσε έναν αέρα που παρέσυρε από τη θάλασσα ορτύκια· τα έριξε γύρω από το στρατόπεδο σε απόσταση μιας μέρας δρόμου από το ένα μέρος κι άλλο τόσο από το άλλο, και σε πάχος δυο πήχεις από το έδαφος. 32 Ο λαός σηκώθηκε και μάζευε ορτύκια όλη εκείνη την ημέρα, όλη τη νύχτα κι όλη την άλλη μέρα. Το λιγότερο που μάζεψε ο καθένας ήταν δέκα γόμερ. Και τα άπλωσαν να ξεραθούν τριγύρω στο στρατόπεδο.

33 Ενώ όμως το κρέας ήταν ακόμη στο στόμα τους, πριν το μασήσουν, ξέσπασε η οργή του Κυρίου εναντίον του λαού, και τους χτύπησε με μια πολύ μεγάλη συμφορά. 34 Έτσι ο τόπος εκείνος ονομάστηκε Κιβρώθ-Αττααβά (Τάφοι Επιθυμίας), γιατί εκεί θάφτηκαν όσοι είχαν καταληφθεί από έντονη επιθυμία να φάνε κρέας.

35 Από την Κιβρώθ-Αττααβά ο λαός ξεκίνησε για την Ασηρώθ, όπου και κατασκήνωσε.

4 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?*11.4 fell…: Heb. lusted a lust*11.4 wept…: Heb. returned and wept 5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: 6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes. 7 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.*11.7 colour thereof…: Heb. eye of it as the eye of 8 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil. 9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased. 11 And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me? 12 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers? 13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat. 14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. 15 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee. 17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone. 18 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. 19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; 20 But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?*11.20 whole…: Heb. month of days 21 And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month. 22 Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them? 23 And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD’s hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

24 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle. 25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. 26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp. 27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them. 29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD’s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them! 30 And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

31 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day’s journey on this side, and as it were a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.*11.31 as it were a day’s…: Heb. as it were the way of a day 32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp. 33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague. 34 And he called the name of that place Kibroth-hattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.*11.34 Kibroth-hattaavah: that is, The graves of lust 35 And the people journeyed from Kibroth-hattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.*11.35 abode at: Heb. they were in
