1 Στις στέπες της Μωάβ, κοντά στον Ιορδάνη, απέναντι από την Ιεριχώ, είπε ο Κύριος στο Μωυσή: 2 «Διάταξε τους Ισραηλίτες, από την ιδιοκτησία που θα αποκτήσουν με κλήρο, να δώσουν στους Λευίτες πόλεις για να κατοικήσουν και βοσκότοπους γύρω απ’ αυτές. 3 Σ’ αυτές θα εγκατασταθούν οι Λευίτες και θα χρησιμοποιούν τους γύρω βοσκότοπους για τα κοπάδια τους και για τα διάφορα άλλα ζώα τους. 4 Τα λιβάδια των πόλεων, που θα τους δώσετε, θα εκτείνονται έξω από τα τείχη τους σε ακτίνα χιλίων πήχεων. 5 Θα μετρήσετε έξω από την κάθε πόλη, από δύο χιλιάδες πήχεις στην κάθε πλευρά ανατολικά, νότια, δυτικά και βόρεια. Η πόλη θα είναι στη μέση. Αυτά θα είναι τα λιβάδια των πόλεων. 6 Από τις πόλεις που θα δώσετε στους Λευίτες, οι έξι θα είναι πόλεις καταφυγής. Σ’ αυτές θα μπορεί να καταφεύγει ένας που φόνευσε χωρίς να το θέλει. Επιπλέον θα τους δώσετε σαράντα δύο πόλεις. 7 Οι πόλεις που θα δώσετε στους Λευίτες θα είναι συνολικά σαράντα οκτώ, μαζί με τα λιβάδια τους. 8 Θα προέρχονται από την ιδιοκτησία των υπόλοιπων Ισραηλιτών, και θα δοθούν ανάλογα με το μέγεθος της ιδιοκτησίας που θα κληρωθεί στην κάθε φυλή.

9,10 Ο Κύριος έδωσε στο Μωυσή τις ακόλουθες οδηγίες για τους Ισραηλίτες:

«Όταν θα περάσετε τον Ιορδάνη και θα μπείτε στη Χαναάν, 11 να διαλέξετε μερικές πόλεις για να είναι πόλεις καταφυγής. Σ’ αυτές θα μπορεί να καταφεύγει κάθε φονιάς, που θα έχει σκοτώσει άνθρωπο χωρίς να το θέλει. 12 Θα χρησιμεύουν ως άσυλο γι’ αυτόν, για να μην τον σκοτώσει ο εκδικητής του θύματος. Δε θα εκτελείται ο φονιάς αν δεν παρουσιαστεί για να κριθεί μπροστά στην κοινότητα. 13 Οι πόλεις καταφυγής, που θα ορίσετε, θα είναι έξι. 14 Τρεις στην από ’δω όχθη του Ιορδάνη και τρεις στη Χαναάν. 15 Αυτές οι πόλεις θα χρησιμεύουν ως άσυλο στους Ισραηλίτες, στους ξένους και σ’ εκείνους που μένουν προσωρινά μεταξύ σας. Εκεί θα μπορεί να καταφεύγει καθένας που θα έχει σκοτώσει άνθρωπο χωρίς να το θέλει.

16 Αν όμως κάποιος χτυπήσει έναν άλλο με σιδερένιο αντικείμενο και το θύμα πεθάνει, τότε αυτός γίνεται φονιάς και τιμωρείται με θάνατο. 17 Αν του δώσει θανατηφόρο χτύπημα με λιθάρι, και το θύμα πεθάνει, ο δράστης είναι φονιάς και τιμωρείται με θάνατο. 18 Αν το χτύπημα είναι με ξύλινο αντικείμενο, και το θύμα πεθάνει, ο δράστης είναι φονιάς και τιμωρείται με θάνατο. 19 Ο πλησιέστερος συγγενής είναι ο αρμόδιος να θανατώσει το φονιά. Όταν τον συναντήσει πρέπει να τον σκοτώσει. 20 Αν κάποιος σπρώξει έναν άλλο από μίσος ή του πετάξει προμελετημένα κάτι που θα έχει ως επακόλουθο το θάνατο, 21 ή αν εχθρικά φερόμενος τον χτυπήσει με το χέρι του και τον σκοτώσει, τότε ο δράστης πρέπει να τιμωρηθεί με θάνατο. Είναι φονιάς· κι ο πλησιέστερος συγγενής του θύματος, όταν τον συναντήσει, πρέπει να τον σκοτώσει.

22 Είναι δυνατόν όμως κάποιος να σπρώξει έναν άλλο τυχαία, χωρίς έχθρα, ή να του πετάξει κάτι χωρίς προμελέτη, 23 ή να του πετάξει ένα λιθάρι χωρίς να τον έχει δει και να τον σκοτώσει, χωρίς να έχει μίσος εναντίον του και χωρίς να θέλει το κακό του. 24 Τότε η κοινότητα οφείλει να κρίνει σύμφωνα με τις ακόλουθες διατάξεις, ανάμεσα στο δράστη και στον πλησιέστερο συγγενή του θύματος, που ζητάει εκδίκηση. 25 Η κοινότητα θα γλιτώσει το φονιά από τη μανία του εκδικητή και θα τον επαναφέρει στην πόλη καταφυγής όπου είχε καταφύγει. Εκεί θα παραμείνει ως το θάνατο του αρχιερέα, του χρισμένου με το αγιασμένο λάδι. 26 Αν όμως ο φονιάς βγει από την περιοχή της πόλης καταφυγής όπου ήταν κρυμμένος 27 και εκεί, έξω από τα σύνορα της πόλης, τον συναντήσει ο πλησιέστερος συγγενής του θύματος και τον σκοτώσει, τότε ο εκδικητής του φόνου δεν θα είναι ένοχος. 28 Ο φονιάς πρέπει να μένει στην πόλη καταφυγής ως τον θάνατο του αρχιερέα. Μόνο μετά το θάνατο του αρχιερέα θα μπορεί να γυρίζει πίσω στο σπίτι του. 29 Αυτοί είναι οι κανόνες του δικαίου για σας και για τους απογόνους σας παντού, όπου θα έχετε εγκατασταθεί».

30 «Αν κάποιος σκοτώσει άνθρωπο, αυτό πρέπει να αποδειχθεί με πάνω από έναν μάρτυρες, ώστε η κοινότητα να θανατώσει το φονιά. Αλλά ένας μόνο μάρτυρας δεν είναι αρκετός για να καταδικαστεί κάποιος σε θάνατο.

31 »Δεν θα δέχεστε λύτρα για εξαγορά της ζωής ενός φονιά που είναι ένοχος θανάτου. Η θανατική ποινή πρέπει εξάπαντος να εκτελείται. 32 Ούτε θα δέχεστε λύτρα, προκειμένου κάποιος που έχει κρυφτεί σε μια πόλη καταφυγής να γυρίσει πίσω στον τόπο του πριν από το θάνατο του αρχιερέα.

33 »Αν το κάνετε αυτό θα μολύνετε τη χώρα όπου θα κατοικείτε. Ο φόνος μολύνει τη χώρα, και εκτός από τη θανάτωση του δράστη, καμιά τελετουργία καθαρισμού δεν μπορεί να γίνει γι’ αυτήν. 34 Δεν πρέπει να μολύνετε τη χώρα που θα κατοικείτε, γιατί εκεί, ανάμεσα στους Ισραηλίτες, θα κατοικώ και εγώ, ο Κύριος».

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying, 2 Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them. 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts. 4 And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about. 5 And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities. 6 And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.*35.6 to them…: Heb. above them ye shall give 7 So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs. 8 And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.*35.8 he…: Heb. they inherit

9 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come over Jordan into the land of Canaan; 11 Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.*35.11 at…: Heb. by error 12 And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment. 13 And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge. 14 Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge. 15 These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither. 16 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. 17 And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.*35.17 with…: Heb. with a stone of the hand 18 Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. 19 The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him. 20 But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die; 21 Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him. 22 But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait, 23 Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm: 24 Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments: 25 And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil. 26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled; 27 And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:*35.27 he…: Heb. no blood shall be to him 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession. 29 So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 30 Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. 31 Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.*35.31 guilty…: Heb. faulty to die 32 And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest. 33 So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.*35.33 the land cannot…: Heb. there can be no expiation for the land 34 Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.
