1,2 Οι απόγονοι του Ρουβήν και του Γαδ είχαν πάρα πολλά κοπάδια. Όταν είδαν, λοιπόν, ότι οι περιοχές Ιαζήρ και Γαλαάδ, ήταν κατάλληλοι βοσκότοποι για τα ζώα τους, ήρθαν στο Μωυσή και στον ιερέα Ελεάζαρ και τους αρχηγούς της κοινότητας, και είπαν: 3,4 «Η χώρα που ο Κύριος υπέταξε στους Ισραηλίτες –οι πόλεις Αταρώθ, Διβών, Ιαζήρ, Νιμρά, Εσεβών, Ελεαλή, Σεβάμ, Νεβώ και Βαιών– είναι τόπος κατάλληλος για ζώα, και οι δούλοι σου έχουμε πολλά ζώα. 5 Αν έχουμε την εύνοιά σου, Μωυσή», συνέχισαν, «ας δοθεί αυτή η γη για ιδιοκτησία στους δούλους σου και μη μας φέρεις πέρα από τον Ιορδάνη».

6 Ο Μωυσής απάντησε στους απογόνους του Γαδ και του Ρουβήν: «Οι συμπατριώτες σας θα πολεμούν κι εσείς θα κάθεστε εδώ; 7 Γιατί θέλετε ν’ αποθαρρύνετε τους Ισραηλίτες να περάσουν στη χώρα που τους δίνει ο Κύριος; 8 Έτσι έκαναν κι οι πατεράδες σας, όταν τους έστειλα από την Κάδης Βαρνή για να εξερευνήσουν τη χώρα. 9 Πήγαν μέχρι την Κοιλάδα Εσκώλ*Κοιλάδα Εσκώλ. Βλ. κεφ. 13:23 και υποσημείωση. και είδαν τη χώρα που τους έδωσε ο Κύριος αλλά όταν γύρισαν πίσω, αποθάρρυναν τους Ισραηλίτες να μπουν σ’ αυτήν. 10 Εκείνη την ημέρα οργίστηκε ο Κύριος και ορκίστηκε: 11 "Επειδή όλοι οι άντρες εκείνοι που βγήκαν από την Αίγυπτο, από είκοσι ετών και πάνω, δεν ακολούθησαν εντελώς το δρόμο μου, δε θα δουν τη χώρα που υποσχέθηκα να δώσω στον Αβραάμ, στον Ισαάκ και στον Ιακώβ". 12 Εξαιρέθηκαν μόνον ο Χάλεβ, γιος του Ιεφοννή του Κενεζίτη κι ο Ιησούς, γιος του Ναυή, που ακολούθησαν τον Κύριο. 13 Ο Κύριος οργίστηκε τότε εναντίον των Ισραηλιτών και τους άφησε να περιπλανιούνται στην έρημο σαράντα χρόνια, ώσπου να σβήσει ολόκληρη εκείνη η γενιά που είχε πράξει το κακό ενώπιόν του. 14 Και να που τώρα εσείς παίρνετε τη θέση των πατεράδων σας, νέα γενιά αμαρτωλών ανθρώπων, για να επιτείνετε ακόμη περισσότερο το θυμό του Κυρίου εναντίον του Ισραήλ. 15 Γιατί, αν εσείς απομακρυνθείτε απ’ αυτόν, θα συνεχίσει ν’ αφήνει τον Ισραήλ στην έρημο και θα γίνετε αιτία να καταστραφεί ολόκληρος ο λαός».

16 Τότε πλησίασαν το Μωυσή και του είπαν: «Εμείς πρώτα θα χτίσουμε εδώ μάντρες για τα κοπάδια μας και πόλεις για τα παιδιά μας. 17 Έπειτα θα πάρουμε γρήγορα τα όπλα και θα πάμε εμπροσθοφυλακή στη μάχη μαζί με τους άλλους Ισραηλίτες, ώσπου να τους φέρουμε στον τόπο που προορίζεται γι’ αυτούς. Στο μεταξύ όμως τα παιδιά μας θα κατοικούν στις οχυρωμένες πόλεις, για να μην κινδυνεύουν από τους κατοίκους αυτής της χώρας. 18 Δε θα γυρίσουμε σπίτια μας, μέχρις ότου κι ο τελευταίος Ισραηλίτης πάρει το κληρονομικό του μερίδιο. 19 Εμείς δεν θα πάρουμε κληρονομικό μερίδιο μαζί μ’ εκείνους από την άλλη μεριά του Ιορδάνη, γιατί θα έχουμε το μερίδιό μας σ’ αυτήν εδώ τη μεριά, ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη».

20 Ο Μωυσής απάντησε: «Αν σκοπεύετε να εκπληρώσετε αυτό που λέτε, τότε πάρτε τα όπλα σας κι ελάτε για πόλεμο υπό τις διαταγές του Κυρίου. 21 Όλοι οι πολεμιστές σας θα περάσουν τον Ιορδάνη υπό τις διαταγές του Κυρίου, ώσπου να διώξει τους εχθρούς του από μπροστά του. 22 Και θα επιστρέψετε μόνο αφού υποταχθεί η χώρα σ’ αυτόν. Μετά απ’ αυτά θα έχετε απαλλαγεί από την υποχρέωσή σας απέναντι στον Κύριο και στους υπόλοιπους Ισραηλίτες. Τότε κι αυτή εδώ η χώρα θα σας ανήκει με τη συγκατάθεση του Κυρίου. 23 Αν όμως δεν κάνετε έτσι, θα έχετε αμαρτήσει απέναντι στον Κύριο· και να ξέρετε ότι η αμαρτία σας θα φέρει την τιμωρία. 24 Χτίστε πόλεις για τις οικογένειές σας και μάντρες για τα κοπάδια σας και κάνετε όπως είπατε».

25 Οι απόγονοι του Γαδ και του Ρουβήν απάντησαν στο Μωυσή: «Κύριέ μας, οι δούλοι σου θα κάνουμε όπως διατάζεις. 26 Τα παιδιά μας, οι γυναίκες μας, τα κοπάδια μας και όλα τα ζώα μας θα παραμείνουν εδώ στις πόλεις της Γαλαάδ. 27 Οι δούλοι σου όμως, θα πάρουμε όλοι τα όπλα και θα έρθουμε παραταγμένοι για μάχη υπό τις διαταγές του Κυρίου, όπως μας είπες».

28 Τότε ο Μωυσής έδωσε την ακόλουθη διαταγή γι’ αυτούς στον ιερέα Ελεάζαρ, στον Ιησού γιο του Ναυή, και στους αρχηγούς των φυλών του Ισραήλ: 29 «Αν οι απόγονοι του Γαδ και του Ρουβήν», τους είπε, «πάρουν όλοι τα όπλα και περάσουν μαζί σας τον Ιορδάνη, υπό τις διαταγές του Κυρίου και υποταχθεί η χώρα σ’ εσάς, τότε θα τους δώσετε τη χώρα της Γαλαάδ για ιδιοκτησία τους. 30 Αν όμως δεν έρθουν στη μάχη μαζί σας, τότε θα πρέπει να λάβουν ιδιοκτησία μαζί μ’ εσάς στη Χαναάν».

31 Τότε αποκρίθηκαν οι απόγονοι του Γαδ και του Ρουβήν: «Ό,τι είπε ο Κύριος στους δούλους σου, θα το κάνουμε. 32 Θα πάρουμε τα όπλα και θα έρθουμε μαζί σας στη μάχη στη Χαναάν υπό τις διαταγές του Κυρίου, για να μας δοθεί για ιδιοκτησία η χώρα σ’ αυτήν εδώ τη μεριά του Ιορδάνη».

33 Ο Μωυσής, λοιπόν, έδωσε στους απογόνους του Γαδ και του Ρουβήν και στο μισό της φυλής του Μανασσή, γιου του Ιωσήφ, το βασίλειο του Σιχόν, βασιλιά των Αμορραίων και το βασίλειο του Ωγ, βασιλιά της Βασάν, τη χώρα με τις πόλεις της και τα γύρω εδάφη. 34 Οι απόγονοι του Γαδ έχτισαν τη Διβών, την Αταρώθ, την Αροήρ, 35 την Ατρώθ-Σωφάν, την Ιαζήρ, την Ιοχβεχά, 36 τη Βαιθ-Νιμρά και τη Βαιθ-Αράν, όλες πόλεις οχυρωμένες· έφτιαξαν και μάντρες για τα κοπάδια τους. 37 Οι απόγονοι του Ρουβήν έχτισαν την Εσεβών, την Ελεαλή και την Κιριαθαΐμ, 38 τη Νεβώ και την Βάαλ-Μεών –που τους άλλαξαν τα ονόματά τους– και τη Σιβμά. Και έδωσαν νέα ονόματα στις πόλεις που έχτισαν.

39 Η συγγένεια του Μαχίρ, γιου του Μανασσή, επιτέθηκε στη Γαλαάδ, την κυρίεψε και έδιωξε τους Αμορραίους που την κατοικούσαν. 40 Την πόλη αυτή ο Μωυσής την έδωσε στο Μαχίρ, ο οποίος και εγκαταστάθηκε εκεί. 41 Ο Ιαείρ, από τη φυλή Μανασσή, επιτέθηκε σε μερικά χωριά, τα κατέλαβε και τα ονόμασε χωριά του Ιαείρ. 42 Τέλος ο Νοβάχ επιτέθηκε στην Καινάθ και στα περίχωρά της, την κυρίεψε και της έδωσε το όνομά του, Νοβάχ.

1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle; 2 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying, 3 Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,*32.3 Nimrah: also called, Beth-nimrah*32.3 Shebam: also called, Shibmah*32.3 Beon: also called, Baal-meon 4 Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle: 5 Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.

6 And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here? 7 And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?*32.7 discourage: Heb. break 8 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. 9 For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them. 10 And the LORD’s anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying, 11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:*32.11 wholly…: Heb. fulfilled after me 12 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD. 13 And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed. 14 And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel. 15 For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.

16 And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones: 17 But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance. 19 For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.

20 And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war, 21 And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him, 22 And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. 23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. 24 Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth. 25 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth. 26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead: 27 But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.

28 So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel: 29 And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession: 30 But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. 31 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do. 32 We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours. 33 And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

34 And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, 35 And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,*32.35 Jaazer: also called, Jazer 36 And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.*32.36 Beth-nimrah: also called, Nimrah 37 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim, 38 And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.*32.38 gave…: Heb. they called by names the names of the cities 39 And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it. 40 And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein. 41 And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth-jair. 42 And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
