1 Ο Βαλαάμ είδε ότι ο Κύριος ήθελε να ευλογήσει τον Ισραήλ, και δεν πήγε, όπως προηγουμένως, να αναζητήσει μαντεία, αλλά πήγε προς στην έρημο. 2 Γύρισε τη ματιά του και είδε το λαό του Ισραήλ που είχε κατασκηνώσει κατά φυλές. Τότε ήρθε πάνω του το Πνεύμα του Θεού, 3 κι άρχισε να απαγγέλλει αυτον το χρησμό:

«Λόγος του Βαλαάμ, γιου του Βεώρ,

λόγος του ανθρώπου,

που έχει ανοιχτά τα μάτια του.

4 Λόγος αυτού που ακούει τα λόγια του Θεού,

που βλέπει οράματα του Παντοδύναμου,

και που όταν πέφτει σ’ έκσταση,

τα μάτια του ανοίγονται.

5 Πόσο ωραίες είναι οι σκηνές σου, Ιακώβ,

οι κατοικίες σου, Ισραήλ!

6 Απλώνονται καθώς κοιλάδες,

σαν κήποι σ’ ακροποταμιά,

σαν δέντρα αλόης φυτεμένα από τον Κύριο,

σαν κέδροι πλάι στων ποταμών τις όχθες.

7 Τρέχει νερό από τους κάδους τους

τους σπόρους τους φυτεύουν σε καλοποτισμένη γη.

Πιο δυνατός κι απ’ τον Αγάγ ο βασιλιάς τους

και ισχυρή θα είναι η βασιλεία του.

8 Από την Αίγυπτο τους έβγαλε ο Θεός·

για κείνους πολεμάει με δύναμη αγριόταυρου.

Αυτός ο λαός τα εχθρικά του έθνη

τα κάνει μια μπουκιά·

σπάζει τα κόκαλά τους,

τα βέλη τους συντρίβει.

9 Ξαπλώνει κι αναπαύεται σαν το λιοντάρι

και σαν το λιονταρόπουλο·

να τον ξυπνήσει ποιος τολμά;

Ας είν’ ευλογημένος όποιος σε ευλογεί,

κι όποιος σε καταριέται, καταραμένος να ’ναι».

10 Τότε ο Βαλάκ οργίστηκε εναντίον του Βαλαάμ κι άρχισε να χτυπάει τις γροθιές του. «Σε κάλεσα για να καταραστείς τους εχθρούς μου», του φώναζε, «κι εσύ, αντίθετα, τρεις φορές τους ευλόγησες πλουσιοπάροχα. 11 Φύγε, λοιπόν, τώρα και πήγαινε στον τόπο σου. Είχα σκεφτεί να σε τιμήσω πάρα πολύ, αλλά ο Κύριος σου στέρησε τις τιμές». 12 Ο Βαλαάμ απάντησε: «Εγώ είπα στους αγγελιοφόρους που μου έστειλες, 13 ότι κι αν ακόμα ο Βαλάκ μου δώσει το σπίτι του γεμάτο ασήμι και χρυσάφι, δε θα μπορέσω να παραβώ τη διαταγή του Κυρίου και να κάνω από μόνος μου καλό ή κακό· θα πω μόνο ό,τι μου πει ο Κύριος».

14 «Τώρα λοιπόν εγώ γυρίζω στο λαό μου. Έλα όμως να σου αποκαλύψω τι θα κάνει στο μέλλον ο λαός αυτός στο λαό σου». 15 Τότε ο Βαλαάμ άρχισε ν’ απαγγέλλει αυτόν το χρησμό:

«Λόγος του Βαλαάμ, γιου του Βεώρ,

λόγος του ανθρώπου, που έχει ανοιχτά τα μάτια του.

16 Λόγος εκείνου που ακούει τα λόγια του Θεού

και που τις σκέψεις του Υψίστου τις γνωρίζει·

που βλέπει οράματα του Παντοδύναμου,

και που όταν πέφτει σ’ έκσταση

τα μάτια του ανοίγονται.

17 Τον βλέπω, αλλά όχι τώρα·

τον ατενίζω, μα όχι από κοντά.

Ένα αστέρι θ’ ανατείλει απ’ τον Ιακώβ,

ραβδί ηγεμονικό θα υψωθεί απ’ τον Ισραήλ,

που θα χτυπήσει τα μηλίγγια της Μωάβ

και την κορφή του κεφαλιού όλων του Σηθ των απογόνων.

18 Θα κατακτήσει την Εδώμ

θα κατακτήσει τη Σεείρ*Εδώμ...Σεείρ. Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 32:3. ο Ισραήλ,

νικώντας τους εχθρούς του

κι όλο θα γίνεται πιο δυνατός.

19 Θα βγει εξουσιαστής από τον Ιακώβ

και θ’ αφανίσει όσους απόμειναν στην Αρ».

20 Όταν ο Βαλαάμ αντίκρυσε την περιοχή των Αμαληκιτών είπε αυτόν το χρησμό:

«Ο Αμαλήκ είναι το πρώτο από τα έθνη,

αλλά στο τέλος, για πάντα θα καταστραφεί».

21 Όταν αντίκρυσε την περιοχή των Κεναίων είπε αυτόν το χρησμό:

«Στέρεη είναι η κατοικία σας

κι ασφαλισμένη σαν φωλιά ψηλά στους βράχους.

22 Αλλά σεις οι Κεναίοι θα καταστραφείτε

όταν θα σας αιχμαλωτίσουν οι Ασσύριοι».

23 Ο Βαλαάμ άρχισε να λέει αυτόν το χρησμό:

«Αλίμονο! Ποιος θα επιζήσει

μετά την πράξη τούτη του Θεού;

24 Θα ’ρχονται πλοία απ’ του Κιτίου τα παράλια,

θα ταπεινώσουνε τους Ασσυρίους·

τους απογόνους του Έβερ

θα τους υποδουλώσουνε για πάντα».

25 Μετά ο Βαλαάμ έφυγε και γύρισε στον τόπο του. Επίσης κι ο Βαλάκ πήρε κι αυτός το δικό του δρόμο.

1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.*24.1 to seek…: Heb. to the meeting of 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him. 3 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:*24.3 whose…: Heb. who had his eyes shut, but now opened 4 He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 5 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! 6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. 7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. 8 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. 9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

10 And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times. 11 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour. 12 And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying, 13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak? 14 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.

15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: 16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.*24.17 smite…: or, smite through the princes of 18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.

20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.*24.20 the nations: the nations that warred against Israel*24.20 that…: or, even to destruction 21 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock. 22 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.*24.22 the Kenite: Heb. Kain*24.22 until…: or, how long shall it be ere Asshur carry thee away captive 23 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this! 24 And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever. 25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way.
