1 Ο Ιώβ απάντησε:

2 Είσαστε, αλήθεια, πολύ έξυπνοι!

Όταν εσείς πεθάνετε θα λείψει κι η σοφία.

3 Αλλά κι εγώ έχω σύνεση όπως κι εσείς,

δεν είμαι διόλου κατώτερός σας·

ετούτα όλα που είπατε

ποιος τάχα δεν τα ξέρει;

4 Έγινα ο περίγελως των φίλων μου, εγώ

που άλλοτε παρακαλούσα το Θεό

κι εκείνος μου απαντούσε.

Περίγελως ο δίκαιος κι ο άμεμπτος!

5 Ο ευτυχισμένος σκέφτεται

πως στο δυστυχισμένο

ταιριάζει η περιφρόνηση.

Να σπρώξει δεν διστάζει

εκείνον που τα πόδια του δεν τον βαστούν!

6 Αλλά στα σπίτια των ληστών καλά περνούν,

κι είναι ασφαλείς αυτοί,

που το Θεό εξοργίζουν·

κατάφεραν στη διάθεσή τους να ’χουν το Θεό!

7 Ωστόσο ρώτησε τα ζώα,

θα σε διδάξουν·

ρώτησε τα πουλιά

και θα σου πουν·

8 μίλα στη γη

και θα σου δώσει μάθημα·

της θάλασσας τα ψάρια

θα σου διηγηθούνε.

9 Ποιο απ’ όλα αυτά δεν ξέρει

πως το ’πλασε το χέρι του Θεού;

10 Στο χέρι του είναι η ζωή

κάθε πλάσματος ζωντανού,

και κάθε ανθρώπου η πνοή προέρχεται απ’ αυτόν.

11 Το αυτί διακρίνει τις κουβέντες,

όπως καταλαβαίνει ο ουρανίσκος

τη γεύση της τροφής.

12 Λένε πως βρίσκεις στους γερόντους τη σοφία,

στους ηλικιωμένους σύνεση.

13 Μα στο Θεό ανήκει όλη η σοφία

κι όλη η σύνεση,

κι ακόμα έχει τη δύναμη και ξέρει να ενεργεί.

14 Ό,τι αυτός γκρεμίζει

δεν ξαναχτίζεται·

κι όποιον κλείσει στη φυλακή

δε θα ελευθερωθεί.

15 Κρατάει τη βροχή, κι όλα ξεραίνονται·

ελευθερώνει τα νερά

και πλημμυρίζει η γη.

16 Δική του είν’ η δύναμη και η σοφία·

δικός του είναι κι εκείνος που πλανιέται

κι εκείνος που πλανά.

17 Αυτός κάνει τους πρόκριτους

να περπατούν ξυπόλητοι,

και τους κριτές απομωραίνει.

18 Την εξουσία των βασιλιάδων καταλύει

και στην αιχμαλωσία τούς οδηγεί.

19 Κάνει τους ιερείς να περπατούν ξυπόλητοι,

και προκαλεί των ισχυρών την πτώση.

20 Παίρνει το λόγο απ’ τους ρήτορες τους ικανούς

κι από τους γέροντες τη σύνεση.

21 Ρίχνει την καταφρόνια πάνω στους άρχοντες

και παίρνει από τους ισχυρούς την εξουσία.

22 Γυμνώνει τις αβύσσους απ’ τα σκότη τους

κι ό,τι βρισκόταν στη σκιά

στο φως το φέρνει.

23 Λαούς τούς ανυψώνει

ή τους καταστρέφει·

κάνει ένα έθνος ν’ απλωθεί

κι έπειτα να χαθεί.

24 Παίρνει τη φρόνηση από τους ηγεμόνες των λαών της γης,

και τους αφήνει να περιπλανιούνται

σε δίχως μονοπάτια ερημιές,

25 να ψηλαφούνε δίχως φως μες στο σκοτάδι,

και σαν τους μεθυσμένους να παραπατούν.
