1 Τώρα όμως έχω γίνει ο περίγελως

ανθρώπων που ’ναι νεότεροί μου

και που οι πατεράδες τους

ήταν πιο καταφρονεμένοι

κι από του κοπαδιού μου τα σκυλιά.

2 Τι να τους έκανα άλλωστε,

αφού στα χέρια δύναμη δεν είχαν;

3 Εξαντλημένοι απ’ τις στερήσεις κι απ’ την πείνα

έφευγαν στην κατάξερη τη γη

τη σκοτεινή, κατεστραμμένη κι έρημη.

4 Γύρω απ’ τους θάμνους αρμυρήθρες μάζευαν

και τρώγανε τις ρίζες απ’ τα σπάρτα.

5 Τους διώχναν μέσ’ απ’ την κοινότητα

και φώναζαν ξωπίσω τους,

όπως στους κλέφτες.

6 Στ’ απόκρημνα φαράγγια κατοικούσαν,

στης γης τις τρύπες

και στων βράχων τις σπηλιές.

7 Σαν ζώα φώναζαν ανάμεσα στους θάμνους

και συγκεντρώνονταν

κάτω απ’ τις αγκαθιές.

8 Άνθρωποι ποταποί και κακοφημισμένοι,

αποδιωγμένοι από τη χώρα μακριά.

9 Μα να που τώρα μ’ έκαναν τραγούδι περιπαιχτικό

και θέμα για να συζητούν

και να χλευάζουν.

10 Μ’ αποστροφή με βλέπουν, μ’ αποφεύγουν

και δε διστάζουν να με φτύσουν κατά πρόσωπο.

11 Χαλάρωσε του τόξου μου τη χορδή ο Θεός,

μ’ άφησε ανυπεράσπιστον·

γι’ αυτό κι εκείνοι καταπάνω μου

αχαλίνωτοι ορμήσαν.

12 Το φιδομάνι με χτυπάει κατακέφαλα,

με αναγκάζουνε να υποχωρήσω·

για να μ’ εξουθενώσουν

προχώματα ετοιμάζουνε.

13 Όλες τις διεξόδους μου τις έκοψαν

και προσπαθούνε να με καταστρέψουν

χωρίς να ’χουν ανάγκη

να τους βοηθά κανείς.

14 Χύνονται απ’ των οχυρών μου τις ρωγμές

κι ορμούν απάνω μου

μέσ’ από τα ερείπια.

15 Ο φόβος με κυρίεψε·

έφυγε σαν ανέμου φύσημα η αξιοπρέπειά μου

και πέρασε η ευτυχία μου σαν σύννεφο.

16 Και τώρα πλησιάζω να πεθάνω·

της δυστυχίας οι μέρες με πολιορκούν.

17 Τη νύχτα οι πόνοι διαπερνούν τα κόκαλά μου

που λες και θέλουν

απ’ το σώμα μου να βγουν·

τα νεύρα μου δεν βρίσκουν ησυχία.

18 Ο Θεός με άδραξε από το ρούχο μου,

με σφίγγει καθώς το περιλαίμιο του χιτώνα μου.*καθώς... χιτώνα μου, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «το ένδυμά μου παραμορφώθηκε».

19 Μέσα στη λάσπη μ’ έριξε

κι έγινα σαν το χώμα και τη στάχτη.

20 Θεέ μου, σου φωνάζω, μα συ δεν μου αποκρίνεσαι·

μπροστά σου στέκομαι,

μα εσύ με τη ματιά σου με καρφώνεις.

21 Έγινες ανελέητος για μένα

και με χτυπάς με της γροθιάς σου όλη τη δύναμη.

22 Μ’ αφήνεις να με πάρει στην ορμή του ο άνεμος,

να με συντρίψει

η μανιασμένη καταιγίδα.

23 Το ξέρω πως στο θάνατο με φέρνεις,

στον τόπο της συνάντησης όλων των ζωντανών.

24 Έναν σωρό ερείπια δεν μπορεί πια κανείς να τον στηρίξει.

Πριν καταρρεύσω εντελώς, ας έρθει βοηθός μου ο Θεός.

25 Μήπως δεν έκλαψα γι’ αυτούς,

που ήτανε σκληρή η ζωή τους;

και μήπως δεν λυπήθηκα για τους φτωχούς;

26 Την ευτυχία έλπιζα κι η δυστυχία ήρθε·

με βρήκε το σκοτάδι,

ενώ περίμενα το φως.

27 Αναταράζονται τα σπλάχνα μου, στιγμή δεν ησυχάζουν·

δύστυχες μέρες μ’ ηύραν αναπάντεχα.

28 Θλιμμένος περπατώ χωρίς χαράς αχτίδα·

μες στου λαού σηκώνομαι τη σύναξη

βοήθεια να ζητήσω με κραυγές.

29 Των τσακαλιών έγινα αδερφός

και των στρουθοκαμήλων σύντροφος.

30 Μαύρισε πια το δέρμα μου και ξεκολλά από πάνω μου·

τα κόκαλά μου ο πυρετός τα καίει.

31 Έγινε θρήνος το τραγούδι της κιθάρας μου,

και του αυλού μου ο ήχος κλάμα γοερό.
